Wow. You're lucky--some people don't survive that. A few years back a suburban man was mowing his lawn and didn't know about an underground nest; he was stung to death.

Best time to go after that nest is very early morning when they're still sluggish. Also, I can personally recommend Raid Wasp & Hornet spray. It's pretty much insta-kill. Just wear long sleeves and gloves and stand upwind.

My dad uses a spray can of WD-40 and a lighter to make his own hornet-killing blow torch.

Yikes. Too short-range, and also amounts to holding a napalm grenade if the flame travels back into the can. The Raid has a good long range (the can claims about 20 feet; I haven't measured, but I'd believe it), and every foot of head-start is valuable.

Can't go. Can't NOT go.

Thanks for the hornet-slaying tips everybody. Calidore, yours seems well thought-out and totally sane and responsible. I actually had a half can of that stuff in the barn and I used it before I torched them. Juniper, as usual, yours has style and flare. Where is that can of WD-40 I own?

No worries about El Sancho and the Jackets - I get swarmed once or twice a year. I think they like me and I am a clumsy man. My Pop had a weird reaction once. He got stung on the neck, and boom, a big ole goiter popped out. He didnt get stung again for a few years, and then one of the little bastards got him on the hand, and boom, a big ole goiter popped out on his neck.

I love science psychology more than almost any other field of study, but I would be the worst clinical psychologist in the world. "Buck up, you're fine. Put a bandaid on it."

It's the name that some Americans use instead of "wasps." I couldn't imagine being swarmed, let alone repeatedly. Maybe Sancho has developed an immunity over the years to whatever venom it is wasps inject.

A guy at work ran over a nest while bush hogging and got stung 4 times on the head. Poor kid swolled up like nobody's business.

Many people confuse the Yellow Jacket wasp with the "yellow" paper wasp.
The term paper refers to the composition of the nest that has the look and feel of paper.

Yellow Jackets tend to nest in the ground or just above ground, while the paper wasps nest high above ground.

Looks like I haven’t learned much since 2005 – I’m still harassing the local insect population with hand tools, and they’re still making me do the Saint Vitus Dance across my property (this time I was digging out a pine stump rather than planting a Japanese Maple). And Scher is as inquisitive ever.

Also I notice that in ’05 I thought a Yellow Jacket was a bee, but as we’ve all determined here – it’s actually a wasp. Vespidae not Apidae (I love Wikipedia). At any rate, those little suckers are FAST. My Springer Spaniel found a nest a couple of years ago. She showed up whining at the back door with a puffy-droopy face, looking like a Basset Hound.

They’re also a popular mascot in the South Eastern US. It was the mascot for my High School as well as for an institution of higher learning right here in Hot-lanta:
