Very good film, according to the directors cuts it's one of the earlier independantly financed films, and the acting is very good by both Raul Julia and William Hurt. It was filmed in Brazil towards the end of the military regime and some how they got away with reflecting things that had recently happened in Brazil.

Old Joy - Starring Bonnie Prince Billy (Will Oldham) William London
It's pretty melancholic and minimalistic, but it can ring true to alot of people. A story about two old friends who meet up again after not seeing each other in quite a few years. Things have changed for them, but the movie is very subtle and extremely understated in fleshing that out. Very Indie Film.
I like Bonnie Prince Billy a a musician, so that's what led me to this pretty unknown movie.
Anyone prepared to give a Bruce Willis film 6/10 could hardly be described as very critical.Quote:

It could certainly be ranked at the level of "No Country For Old Men" or a number of Coen bros movies.

just watched 'Guildenstern and Rosencrantz are dead' oh it was so good, I love Tim Roth and this movie was so good their conversations were great and all the Hamlet scenes were so good, it made me want to read Hamlet again.
I also just finished 'Play it again Sam' seen it a bunch of times and loved it every time!
I watched Apocalypse Now Redux last night. It's an excellent film - 8/10, though I'm not sure the additional material added that much to the first cut. Seeing the extras was ok though.
I agree with you, Paul. The original release feels like a well rounded film. The additions weren't necessary, though I guess it's interesting to see how they trimmed it down.
I just finished watching The Squid and the Whale. It was great, I'd give it a 9 or a 10 out of 10. A good movie for a literary person, there are two writers amongst the characters. One pretentious character calls The Metamorphosis "Kafkaesque." Funny stuff.
The original 1985 Fright Night. It was horrific, but not for the reasons they intented. I think some old movies should stay buried.

Lovely animation. First 3D film I've seen, was very impressed with it! Looking forward to seeing more 3D films, I love the sense of depth you get! Shame there aren't many decent ones come out in that format!
Last one I saw was Midnight in Paris, which I didn't care for. Before that we saw The King's Speech. LOVED that one though.
Last new movie I saw was Real Steel in theaters. I thought it was quite good - somewhat predictable and corny, but it's a sports movie, so that's pretty much par for the course. Hugh Jackman's a joy to watch, and the spectacle of seeing robots boxing matters quite a lot, as well.
I watched an Italian made (English language) movie called "City of the Living Dead" and also known as "The Gates of Hell." 2/10. It's a Lucio Fulci picture. Those of you familiar with Fulci's films probably know that he completely ignores plot. All of the work and attention went to gore. The gore was amazing, but every other scene was completely incoherent, worthless, and disconnected; with random characters doing confusing things. It all had very little to do with living dead. At one point a man threw a blowup doll into a room and it instantly self inflated. He then caressed it and the scene abruptly ended, never to be brought up again or explained.
This movie got 2 points for a woman realistically vomiting all of her vital organs and intestines. If you have the patience to sit through it, you will finish it feeling ashamed and embarassed for everyone involved.
I saw a few of his movies back during his '80s heyday. Gates of Hell is probably the worst, although New York Ripper was pretty awful too. House by the Cemetary is better, because he at least tries for atmosphere, though he still couldn't manage coherence. Zombie is probably his best; that one gave me nightmares, probably due to the realistic-looking zombies and the ultra-grim, humorless approach he took. Well, except for the underwater zombie vs. shark fight, but that was awesome.Quote:

'Psycho' with Norman Bates By Alfred Hitchcock and the best film in my opinion is 'The Birds' of Hitchcock.
our idiot brother- it was only OK everybody around me keep talking about comedies and this funny movie and that funny movie, I just never find them very funny. Wes Anderson makes funny movies though... I watched Bridesmaids a while back because EVERYBODY seems to love that movie including my teacher but is't probably the worst movie I have ever seen! no more of this, I'll stick to sci-fi and fantasy,
that reminds me is my 5 year old to young to see the Gremlins? he has seen all star wars and a few harry potter and iron man and a few more superhero movies, I haven't seen gremlins since I was a kid but I would like to watch them with him, he has 3 Gizmos my brother got him so he knows a bit about it....
'I heart Huckabees' loved it! Jason Schwartzman is a great actor and this movie was so good, one of the best Schwartzman movie and definitely the best movie I have seen starring Jude Law.
The Ides of March.
Good movies about politics are unusual, maybe I think that because I compare everything to The West Wing, but this one I really enjoyed.
It was focused on dialogs and didn’t have to use phony car chases etc to get thrilling. The Ides of March show how power always tends to corrupt and I think Nietzsche was right that driving force in humans, all our achievements and ambition, the striving to reach the highest possible position in life, are all manifestations of the will to power.

'Perfect Stranger' gets a 5/10. Wasn't really as good as 'Gothika'.
The seventh seal 10/10 some of life's most deepest enigmas are bought up in a solemn and in some parts scary way, the acting is very well done, the feeling the movie creates is perfect, i really enjoyed this one

A very romantic version of a romantic novel by Francoise Sagan. Very picturesque scenes of Paris and the south if France with elegant people in luxurious surroundings. Directed by Jean Negalescu, everyone's favourite glossy film maker, it's the perfect picture for women and sentimentalists; who are not necessarily one and the same thing. I had seen it before but watching it again was very enjoyable. With not a baseball cap in sight, it beats the phony, juvenile nihilistic, pseudo Freudian angst-ridden rubbish of today by a mile.
10/10.
Catfish, a supposed-documentary on identity. Entertaining and thought-provoking. 8/10.

The King's Speech - Quite an average film if in all honesty. Nowhere near as good as what critics are making out.
Going to be watching some Woody Allen again over the next few weeks.
Currently watching Vicky Christina Barcelona again - good fun.
Want to watch Manhattan again, but will save that for later weeks.
