As Kiwi Aunty has said, there are literally hundreds of hot water springs and spas around and most would have had a Maori village nearby, in the past, mainly for cooking. The only one nowadays where a village is preserved, is Whakarewarewa, in Rotorua.
Some of the hot springs do have mineral-enriched water which has actual therapeutic benefits, but several are also home to the amoeba which causes amoebic meningitis - a fatal disease.
