1796 - Carl Friedrich Gauss discovered that every positive integer is representable as a sum of at most three triangular numbers. (So there! :p)
1797 - Battle Of Cape St. Vincent, on February 14, the British, under the command of Admiral Sir John Jervis aboard HMS Victory, win a battle against the Spanish.
Despite being outnumbered 2 to 1, the british manage to severely cripple the spanish fleet, which included the largest ship in the world at that time, the Santisima Trinidad, a 130-gun behemoth.
During the battle, Nelson, aboard captain disobeyed orders given to him by Jervis, and took his ship straight into the Spanish line, breaking formation. This meant his ship, captain was quickly engaging the spanish, and came under heavy fire. Despite his ship being heavily damaged, he managed to board a spanish ship, and after that a second, capturing both in a unique manoeuvre.
Jervis commended Nelson on his actions during the battle, and after the battle both men where rewarded for their actions.
