Best anthology on Turgenev
Hello!
I live in Mexico City. Although English is not my mother's tongue, I read books in this language.
As for Turgenev, do yourself a favor, drop whatever you are doing now (drop her on the matress) and buy "The Essential Turgenev", by Elizabeth Cheresh Allen. You will find "The Diary of a Superfluous Man", "A Nest of Gentry", "Rudin", "First Love" and, of course, "Fathers and Sons", plus an excellent introduction. Publisher is Northwester University Press.
Greetings fellow literati!
Hi all.
My name is Scribblette, and I'm a wordaholic :hurray:
Seriously, I cant think of anything I enjoy more than curling up with and getting lost in a good book. I've been prowling around this site for a while and finally decided to join in. Look forward to meeting many of you!
Am I reading what's not there?
G’day fellow-readers,
I’m an old codger, so old that I can see the end of the perch I’m supposed to drop off.
I like to keep in touch with young minds and join in discussions of controversial topics, and I’m doing a short course on English Literature so that’s what I’m doing in this forum.
I think a forum like this is a good place to talk about things honestly, without having to regurgitate the opinions of your senior lecturer or spout what all the guides and notes say about something. If you can’t take Chaucer at any price you should be able to say so, though you should be at least prepared to listen to somebody who thinks C. is the bee’s knees.
(Why is it that everyone I’ve met who hated Chaucer was a female?)
I’ll never forget the time long ago when I wrote a poem and the head of the English department analysed it in front of a huge room full of students. He read things into it that I wouldn’t have dreamed of, but of course I wasn’t about to embarrass the bloke –and risk getting lower grades! So, when asked about an interpretation I tended to nod weakly in assent. Tell me there are other devout cowards out there.
At the moment I’m reading "Tom Jones" and finding Henry Fielding a lot funnier that I’d realised.
Until next time, hooroo from Oz.
Hello fellow lovers of lit
Hi, my name is Miss Meadowsweet (well, not really, but that's the username I chose). I am from the very northern part of Wisconsin where it is winter for nine months out of the year. There are many cons about living here, but one pro is that the long winters give me a lot of time to think about stories that need to be told, and then to write them, which is what I truly love doing.
I have written three novels. The first two were really just warm-ups, I suppose one could say, but the third I just recently finished, and I believe it may be truly worth getting published, which is what I'm working on at the moment. So basically, I love, love, love writing! And of course, to love writing, I had to first love reading.
I like to read a diverse range of books. I love a lot of the classics and want to read more of them, but I also love a lot of other genres. I get inspired by many things I read and do and see in life and this makes me want to write more. I especially love the outdoors and natural things, and I love digging my hands into the earth.
Right now I am a newspaper reporter for my small local newspaper. I like it, but what I really want to do is become a writer, not just a reporter of the facts. This fall I am hopefully going to be in Virginia going to school for my masters degree in English.
I am so glad to have found this forum and look forward to interacting with y'all!
