I didn't see it; odd since usually I like all those Knight type films. I alway meant to see it. So, you mean the guy lost the very shirt off his back, along with other articles of apparal? That must have been a very funny scene. I will have to see the film soon.
My son gave me that film to watch ages ago and I, too, could not get into it or relate to it at all at the time. I did hear somewhere that one could watch the movie 'forward' as well as the usual 'backward' way it is set up. I have no idea how one does that. I don't think I want to waste anymore time watching it; but I will consider it sometime in the future. I did orginally present to my son a theory I had on one aspect of the plot and he looked at me shocked and said he had not thought of it in quite that way. I probably should watch it again and see now what my take is on that part. I don't particularly like the main actor either, Guy Pearce. He just doesn't do it for me. Something about him annoys me; maybe, as Mono said, he is over-acting. MissS get your husband to watch it and let me know what he thinks of it. It seems guy really like this film. I have heard a few just raving over it and saying it was the one of the best film they ever saw in their lives. Strange because it just left me cold. I am not sure why, except to say it was so hard to comprehend that all my energy was eaten up by figuring it all out, or thinking I did.
Heath Ledger was a very, very gifted actor, and it seems, a very nice human being. I don't know what he expected, though, mixing all those pills. It's sad he didn't learn from Marilyn Monroe, Anna Nicole Smith, Elvis, etc. that you can't take twenty different kinds of mood altering drugs and survive. I feel very badly for him, he must have felt terrible to take all of that. Still, I admire his acting ability very much, and I admire the good things he did in his life.
I'm not anti-medication, either. It can save lives, but the tragedy of Heath Ledger just points out again that medication has to be respected because it's very potent.
I don't feel bad for the acting community - that seems to make Ledger a commodity. I feel bad for Ledger, himself. He was in pain so great he chose to risk (and lose) his life looking for relief, and I feel bad for his friends and family. The acting community, who is so narcissistic, will get along.
I must post briefly today; I have a tons to do today offline. I saw Heath Ledger in a film not long ago, from my library, where in he played a heroin addict, along with his girlfriend. Does anyone know the name of the film? It was really sad to hear of his death and even more so after seeing this quite tragic and sad film. I thought his acting was amazing in it. I also liked him in the film "5 Feathers", even though that also is not a truthful film in regard to actually history or a period piece (took many liberties), still it was quite interesting and enjoyable.
House of Sand and Fog
It's so (Greekly) tragic, that I had to watch Troy, right after it, so as to recover sanity.
A good movie, tecnically speaking, but unbearable, to those who can't stand heavy stuff (a bit like Saving private Ryan ..., only, not in a war.)
Impartially, I'd say ... a B+ or an A-
If I were a Greek tragodian, I'd say A, or A+ ...
Troy
Since I found out that Briseis wasn't a virgin, but a widow, it can't have a 10 ...
It's about a 7/10 ("B-"?)
I can't forgive these insistent "little changes" they keep making ...
A good movie, anyway. I'll keep watching every week, I suppose. And reread the Illiad because of it.
:thumbs_up
The More the Merrier
9.5/10
A very enjoyable 1940's comedy that stars Jean Arthur, Charles Coburn and the great Joel McCrea. I would give it a higher mark, but I have this thing against Jean Arthur. She just irritates me. I would've preferred another actress to be the lead, but oh well! :)
For Heaven's Sake
9/10
A very nice little silent film starring Harold Lloyd.
W. 9/10
I expected to hate this movie, but I was pleasantly surprised. Josh Brolin did an excellent job of portraying George W. Bush with his mannerisms and all. Also, I never really gave much thought to what drove or motivated our last president to make the choices he made and I don't know how close to the truth this story gets, but it was certainly an interesting way to look at his presidency.
Yes Man. 9/10.
"Entre les murs" - great movie.
Dinner at Eight
9/10
I don't know why this film always seems to be advertised as a comedy because it really isn't. It is much more a drama with some comedy added in. Anyway, the movie is worth a watch just for Wallace Beery's and John Barrymore's performances. :thumbs_up
Let the right one in. 10/10
Hands down one of the best movies I have ever seen
Amandla! A Revolution in Four Part Harmony
a must see..
Interviews, archival footage, and filmed performances highlight the role of music in the South African struggle against apartheid.
Our Mutual Friend ~ The 6 hour BBC miniseries
Great cast of colorful characters; wonderful acting and amazing realism; almost too stark and also very dismal and dark at times. If you like Gothic, you will enjoy this film. The atmosphere is often very Gothic in aspect. I especially loved the lead, Steven Machintosh. He has long been a favorite of mine. He did a fine job in this series, with such a quiet nunanced restrained, but emotional performance. Anna Friel was very good, as well; she is the young woman who believes she wants for nothing in this world but money. I particularly liked the performance of Keeley Hawes. I just saw her in the Hardy adaptation of "Under the Greenwood Tree" a few weeks ago. She is very beautiful, I think.
Has anyone seen this film? I think I need to re-watch it, even though that would take considerable time, being such a long film. I think I would gain a better understanding of some of the details, which took place in the first part, of this complicated plot; the plot, by the way, has many twists and turns and keeps you guessing all the time. Some parts I found a little confusing and can be slow-going at times; but stick with it; you would not regret it. I would love to discuss this with someone, who has either read the Charles Dicken's novel (his last) or has seen the production, or both. Definitely, a very interesting novel and movie! I would give this fine production a 9/10.
The Seven Samurai
Whoa!
Wow!
Unable to rate it. It's above rating systems.~
My House in Umbria ~ beautifully filmed and set in the Italian countryside, great acting, Maggie Smith was wonderful as always. Heartfelt story with a great supporting cast. I love Chris Cooper, as well; he always turns in a nuanced and convincing performance. Very enjoyable and very touching. A lovely and sweet film. 9/10
I'm passing along a bit of information that I just heard about. Maybe some of you have already heard of it? It's Internet Movie Data Base.com. Apparently it has every movie ever made with ratings. Plus it also includes TV shows in its data base, too. Happy movie watching!
Evan Almighty. 6/10.
Tom Cruise as the last samurai was like wtf?! It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. It was actually a pretty decent movie. But I mean, c'mon...seriously Tom Cruise ...
The Jungle Book (the Disney one)
Fabulous. You just can't beat the Disney classics. I hadn't seen it since I was a kid and my step son was watching it the other day. I absolutely love those old Disney movies. 10/10
The last grown up movie I watched was Elizabeth: The Golden Age
A lot of historical innaccuracies, but overall, a well done movie. Wonderful casting, beautiful costuming and cinemetography. Good dramatic effect without going overboard. I just love Cate Blanchett 9/10
Well, I just saw Let the Right One In and loved it. It was visually, very pretty. Swedish landscapes. I think I will have to see it again, to get all the symbolism, but I would highly recommend it. 9/10
Saw the Taiwanese film "Eat Drink Man Woman" which was absolutely wonderful! A brilliantly shot, narrated and entertaining film that says a lot about Chinese and Western culture. Great film for foodies, lots of great montages of cooking.
8/10 (which is very high for me!)
Labyrinth (with David Bowie)
I love Brian Froud and David Bowie so I can't believe I've never seen this before!! It was kind of cheesy, but very entertaining and fun and cool. My 6 year old LOVED it. We really had a nice evening watching it together. Even my 4 month old was really into it. She was cooing along to the songs and watching all the little critters.
The puppets and special effects are not very good compared to what they have now. But sometimes I like it better that way and in this case it works. I only wish I'd seen it when it first came out!
I will definately be buying this movie
10/10
Another movie I saw recently that I really enjoyed was The Diving Bell and the Butterfly which is based on a book of the same name. I haven't read the book though. I hear its a true story.
It was wonderfully filmed. An absolutely beautiful and touching movie. It's a French film and though I don't know any French, I don't think it would have had the same effect if it were in another lanugage. Which is why I always prefer to watch movies subtitled and not dubbed. The perspectives and story and cinemetography and really everything were quite well done. It wasn't a high budget film and didn't need to be. I most definately want to read the book now.
10/10
I also loved The Diving Bell and Butterfly! So creative.
We watched a very wacky film last night, a digital animation movie, called Terkel I Knibe - absolutely hilarious! It has some very dark humor, occasionally very blunt, twisted, and never contains a dull moment. I would call it where Pixar meets South Park. I think I spent the entirety of the film laughing myself to tears.
Rating: 10/10.
In Bruges. What can i say. Bloody Brilliant. 10/10 That brings the total amount of films i like Colin Farrell in to two. :p
Totally agreed!
Yeah the humour was very dublin. :p only way to discribe it. very different story and thats why i liked it. and it make me teary eyed and feel for the characters. was all round great!
The quote that had me in stitches was
Quote:
I grew up in Dublin. I love Dublin. If I grew up on a farm, and was retarded, Bruges might impress me but I didn't, so it doesn't.
