Actually, LadyWentworth, this film came first; but the other may be more acclaimed. I happened to find it myself since I was searching for Anton Walbrook films. Ever see "The Red Shoes"...the Powell and Pressburger classic? It is one of my all-time favorites. Walbrook is amazing in that film.

Here is what I just discovered from Amazon:

The Anton Walbrook film

This is the acclaimed original screen version of the thriller. Gaslight is about a newly married woman who is slowly being driven insane by her evil husband. Twenty years prior a woman was killed for her precious rubies. The murderer could not find them.

The Ingrid Bergman film

George Cukor helped transform a moody Victorian stage melodrama (previously filmed in Britain in 1939) into a gothic Hollywood romantic thriller.

Probably the film with Bergman is more polished and lavish. I see on Amazon everyone is giving that one 5 stars and the other 4 or a 4 1/2 stars. I would say they both have merit; although, there were some corny parts in the version I saw; understandable, having been an early classic flick.

1984

1984 (the 1984 version) I'd like to see the 1956 version now to see how it compares.

I haven't finished the book yet. I don't always cheat and watch a movie before reading the book but I needed to this time, for a meeting. I'd give it a 7 out of 10. It certainly set the mood in sets, costumes, etc, etc. The acting was excellent.

I'm anxious to finish the book, because I'm under the impression that there is a lot more to Winston's thoughts and anti-party beliefs than they could touch on in the movie.

I liked the part in the movie where he finally meets Julia in the woods and tells her that he despises all that is good and loves the corrupt. (paraphrased) It struck me how what is good is what the party says is good, but he no longer desires it. The corrupt are those individual freedoms they could not have, did not know they could have.

I will have to see if Netfilx has that original version. I love the Bergman-Boyer version. I haven't seen it in years. Now you got me thinking that I need to watch it again. I have so many movies (especially a lot that I recorded when I was a kid - "Gaslight" being one of them) that I probably have not watched since high school. You might not like this version then, because you have the Ingrid one in your mind and love that one. Now I would like to see both, too. This one I bought was cheap but it is not restored so the film was pretty original in quality but in a way it gave it that old time look. I know what you mean about those great bargain DVD's; Amazon have been offering too many lately and it is always tempting. I was feeling a bit guilty lately, too; especially since my DVD player was on the blink and so I sprung for a new one, but not an upconverting type. I may be sending that one back to the manufacturer if I can find my receipt and it is under a year old. I had it with this player which was suppose to be good. I got a Sony progressive scan really cheap on Amazon. The thing is I am super frustrated, because the whole deal with my TV is that I have to reconnect nearly everything; I also have no idea how to do this one my own. If I keep the TV connected to some of my units, then I need someone to hold it while I switch players; unless I disconnect everything, which I would like to avoid doing. So needless to say, DVD's I bought months ago, have not yet been opened, nor watched. I had to watch everything on my computer, which I find a bit limiting and uncomfortable. That is why I haven't watched many movies lately; I can tell you that at this point I am going through serious movie withdrawal. As Dire Straits sang "I want my MTV", only is is 'movies' in my case...;) I miss my movies! :bawling:

Adore the desert scenes and love O'Toole in it. A very, very good movie about a very fascinating man.

MissScarlett, I absolutely love David Lean films and the big one is "Lawrence of Arabia". I just had to buy it for my collection. It is my favorite Peter O'Toole role and such a classic, I never tire of watching i; what a great supporting cast as well. I do find the real Lawrence to be a fascinating man. Did you know he was good friends with Thomas Hardy?

I haven't seen "Milk" yet, but I certainly hope to. I didn't see the Bergman/Boyer version of "Gaslight" either. I only saw the Anton Walbrook version (earliest), because the actor fascinates me, ever since I saw him in "The Red Shoes", one of my favorite old films. I would like now to see the Bergman/Boyer version or "Gaslight". It is probably more polished and perfected. The last movie I saw in theaters (because Finding Nemo is currently on dvd in the background for the fourth time tonight) was Watchmen. I give it a 3/10. It was terrible...it liked to have seemingly pornographic scenes.

On dvd the last movie I saw was Into the Wild. It was okay, but I didn't care for the ending, so 7/10.

I just love "Lawrence of Arabia," and I, too, feel it's David Lean's masterpiece. I could watch it again right now. Peter O'Toole was so handsome in the film as well! I did not know about Thomas Hardy. I love his books, too. They can be depressing, but I still love them. "Doctor Zhivago" is another Lean favorite of mine, but I find "Lawrence of Arabia" to be a little better, more sweeping in scope, and yet it still gives us a very intimate look at Lawrence.[/QUOTE]

I usually am not fond of biopics, but my husband wanted to see "Milk," so we watched it. I like Sean Penn, think he's an amazing actor, and he's never been so good as in "Milk." It was a wonderful film.

I have to admit, I keep meaning to read "The Yellow Wallpaper" and I never get to it. It's by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, if I'm not mistaken.

Last night, I watched Hitchcock's "Rear Window" and loved it. My husband bought it for me and I hadn't seen it in years. I found myself more fascinated with it than I was in the past.

I have the DVD of "Women in Love." I might watch that tonight.

I didn't really like it, because of the baby parts mostly. Those just make me so sick. I doubt I could watch it now having a grand-daughter so young. My son lent me the movie but I have to say it really wasn't my cup of tea.

Miss Scarlett, I agree; I think that LOA is still my favorite. I don't own "Doctor Zhivago", although I have nearly pushed the Amazon button to order it more than once; I admit it. When I was young I was totally in love with Omar Shariff and I thought that film was the best film I ever saw; but, for some odd reason now I favor Lean's other films. I did breakdown recently and I bought "Ryan's Daughter". I liked it very much and when I found out that John Mills played the role of the town misfit, ever since them I have been entranced with his Oscar winning role; truly incredible, such a makeup and personality tranformation. I love the setting for the movie, those gorgeous vistas of white beach in Ireland, and I love Sara Mills; she was so young and freshly beautiful in that film. Have you see it? It is a strange film in some ways, but the more I watch it, the more I love it. I also feel similar to Lean's film "A Passage to India". I love Judy Davis and think that film is a wonderful adaptation of the Forster book, which I loved. Of course, "Bridge Over the River Kwai" can't be beat, but my library owns it, so I can watch that one anytime for free.

It is funny; I love biops. As soon as I find out the story is based on someone real it takes on new meanings for me. I think Sean Penn is excellent. He was great in "Mystic River", "My Name is Sam", and "Dead Man Walking" just to name a few. I didn't like him early on in his career but now I think he has come into his own and is truly a fine nuanced actor. I do want to see "Milk" eventually. I am sure my library will get that one in and then I will watch it.

Is it the one with Moira Shearer, the ballet dancer? It also stars Marius Goring and Anton Walbrook. If so the score is magnificent. I love "Heart of Fire". There actually is another film with a title close to this one or the same, but that is a Christmas story and much later. "The Red Shoes" I believe was produced in the 50's and there is a book, also. I read the book. I think Powell and Pressburger wrote the book after the screenplay. Martin Scorsee has a huge collection of things related to the film. On my DVD there is an extra features slideshow of the posters, programs, promo shots, etc. It is very interesting.

This is a funny thing. I bought this book "Great Short Stories by American Women"; read most of them so far. This particular story really stood out the most. I was telling my friend, Lynne, who recently joined up on this site, and she got it from her library; loved it. She had to call me up right away to compare notes. You have to read it someday soon and I will re-read it and maybe we all can discuss it; although, I think maybe it has been discussed on this site before. Oh, no doubt one of my favorite Hitchcock movies, if not thee favorite. I think that film is perfect. I hope to own it someday but for now my library owns that one too, so I haven't purchased it. So do I! Now do you have the one with Alan Bates and Oliver Reed, Glenda Jackson? The Ken Russell film? If so, that is a classic. It is nearly exactly like the book; however Russell did take some liberties for film's sake. The orginal novel is incredible and does surpass the movie; if you did not read it yet, you must someday. We had a wonderful long involved discussion on this forum dedicated to analysising "Women in Love". I should copy out all the entries to keep for posterity. We also discussed in depth "Sons and Lovers". I still think the best discussion was for WIL, although they both were good.

I also have the Russell version of "Lady Chatterly"; which I think is even closer to the actual book.

Well, this is the first time I run into somebody who really likes that movie :) I watched it with my mother and sister, they walked away at the torture scene and did not return... I think it is a wonderful, wonderful movie (with some great dialogues) and it even made me read "Seven Pillars of Wisdom" by T.E. Lawrence :D I prefer the film though ;)

Hardy - I just finished reading Jude the Obscure and I can totally imagine him and Lawrence to have been friends; they must both have been disappointed by society. Though I do not think Lawrence was at the beginning of the first world war, he definately was in the end...

Yesterday I saw Match Point by Woody Allen again. I can really see that movie over and over: 9/10. The opening is marvelous

Still is one of my favorite films. This is a movie that thoroughly entertains me every time that I see it. Besides, I have always said, and will continue to say, that the way Robert DeNiro looks in that film is perfection. He is my ideal man - looks wise - in there. That doesn't hurt the appeal of the movie any. ;) But it still is a fun film.

Very, very good film. Very well-made. An incredibly depressing movie, though. It is a major downer. I mean, I knew what happened, but playing it out in a movie just really made it worse. Sean Penn was perfect as Harvey Milk. If you know anything about the real man, as I did, he was the absolute perfect choice to play him. I think the casting for the rest of the cast wasn't bad either.

He had some pretty good roles in his early career. Have you ever seen "Fast Times at Ridgemont High"? One of the classic films in my household when I was a kid. Nobody in the world could be as great as he was as Jeff Spicoli. :D
Then you have the film "Bad Boys". Another classic in my house from my childhood years. This is at the opposite end of the scale, though, when it comes to genre. It stars Penn and Esai Morales (he is just too beautiful - even when he is a bad guy;)). In fact, when I was little I was always quoting Morales' character. :p It is about these two guys that end up in the same detention facility and they have it out for the other and blah, blah, blah. I personally love this film. I think it is one of the best from the 80's, but I wouldn't necessarily recommend it to you. I don't think you'd care for it. You wouldn't like to watch the ending. :)

Also, never forget that he is on "Little House on the Prairie". :nod: I can remember when I was a kid my brothers would say "That has to be Sean Penn". It IS him (his father directed a couple episodes). But it is kind of funny because he looks just the same. There is no doubt it is him. Then, a long time ago, I was looking him up on IMDB for a specific movie title, sure enough, "Little House" is on his resume. :D

Sapphire, glad that was helpful to you. I simply adore the movie LOA, so you are not alone. It is considered one of the greatest movies of all time.

I know a lot of little facts about Hardy, because a good friend is a Hardy buff and we meet up on a site devoted just to the great author. My friend has also send me material through snail mail concerning Hardy's biography. It has been said that "Jude the Obscure" was also based on a true life story - not Hardy's personally. Many of Hardy's works did have roots in some biographical story of the time or one that does directly figure himself into the plot. Hardy studied architecture before he became an author. In several of his books main characters are involved with architecture. Yes, indeed, Hardy has a lot of deep disappointments in life generally. I am sure the two authors and great men did share some of that part of their lives but mostly the attraction I am sure, was intellectual in nature.

Oh, I liked that Allen movie very much. It is so interesting.

Glad to see you enjoyed it, too, LadyWentworth. I watched it last week for the first time, and felt absolutely astounded - a very touching, epic film. Bravo, Gus van Sant!

Last night, I watched Miracle at St. Anna. A friend of mine rented it, and I felt a little reluctant, since Spike Lee and I have a bit of a love-hate relationship; his films either amaze me or ruin a few hours for me. Wow, this one definitely impressed me! World War II never seems to get enough coverage in contemporary storytelling and film-making, and it can get a bit repetitious, to tell all honesty, but Miracle at St. Anna not only have originality, but also a fantastic plot, good acting, and a variety of scenes for tragedy, humor, and times to reflect; a few parts, however, seemed a bit too 'Spike Lee,' since, come on, he also did Bamboozled.
Rating: 9/10.

Wow, thanks for posting that. I just watched the first segment and liked it very much. Olivier Reed was an amazing actor; Christian Bale had incredible talent as a young kid actor. He played a youth in Ken Branagh's "Henry V", too. Is this whole film available on Youtube? I would love to watch it all.

I watched Religulous last weekend. Actually I watched it twice - once with a little buzz going on and the second time without. I like Bill Maher and I remember watching his stand-up and thinking that I could do with a little less religion bashing. I thought he made good points but I also thought that he was somewhat condescending so I wasn't sure what to expect with Religulous. I thought it might be good for a few laughs, but I expected to be more offended than amused. I thougt he would probably interview several people from different faiths and then go on to make fun of them. I was pleasantly surprised though. There were a lot of interviews, but they were broken up with a lot of fitting and hilarious footage and music strategically inserted to either make a point or make you laugh. Best of all, Bill Maher wasn't as big of an arse as I expected him to be. Some people may get offended I suppose, but I would suggest that anyone who gets upset just keep in mind that Bill Maher is a comedian. So, I give Religulous a 9/10.

All of those are great! Nice gift from you husband. I love the early movies in B/W. I have a small set like that, which I have not watched for awhile now. The early rendition of "The Lady Vanishes" is real good.

Sometimes we do need the light side of life. I caught on Youtube the whole Shakespeare remake of "The Taming of the Shrew" starring Rufus Sewell as the manly bridegroom, two nights ago. It's set in modern day and is a scream. Kate is played by this English actress, who is really tiny and has a squeaky funny voice. She is hilarious. I had to view most of it twice, since I got such a kick out of it. I think it should be up for awhile, if anyone is interested. I believe it is about 9 segments, the complete movie.

Last night I watched "The Woodlanders", also with cute, sexy, handsome Rufus Sewell, and then part of Ken Branagh's "Frankenstein". I own both, so watch them often. I cried near the ending to the first film. It gets to me everytime. I like both films very much.

Yes, it's a gorgeous film, and that scene is very moving. The score is wonderful, too. Someone gave me the score to the BBC miniseries of "Brideshead Revisited," which I own and love. It's lovely. I'll have to watch that miniseries again soon. Have you seen it?

Oh my gosh, you are like me; you are slowing down ;) but you're still thinking of the ones you will want to buy! haha....I used to be fanatical about opening them right away in case they were defective and had to go back; then I did end up getting behind on that and I have at least 10 not opened yet. Last night, rather than my usual obsessing on my favorites I have watched repeatedly, I made myself open a new one. It is a adaptation "The Tenant of Wildfell Hall" after the Anne Bronte novel. I am still trying to figure out how I feel about this film; it is almost too realistic at times and really stark, set on the moors. I feel it is a little long and dragging somewhat, but hope tonight I change my mind about that. It seems to be coming to a very dramatic part. I am probably 3/4 through; it's broken up into sections, since the credits keep appearing at the end of each part. I suppose it aired on BBC TV.

I loved the scenry, too. That night carriage ride so lovely; also the vistas of Monte Carlo when they arrive there; I loved when Viky went to dinner at the impresario's request. That scene with the weedy stairway upward was so amazing and thrilling; she looked just like Cinderella mounting those steps to her prince. This movie is one of my alltime favorites - you can't tell can you? haha

I loved "Brideshead Revisited", but that is one I have not sprung for yet. I have thought of it though. It is in my wishlist on Amazon. I bet the score is great. I collect film scores. I have tons by now. They are some of my favorite CD's. By the way, I own most of Patrick Doyle's music scored that he did for Ken Branagh films. I play "Hamlet" all the time. I can't get enough of that fine score. The film I have seen now at least 20 times in it's entirety. That is one of my obsessions. I love the film! Glad to hear you say you enjoyed it and loved it, too.

I actually only saw one little part, but it surely looked good and Kenneth B was a baby...he looked so young and thin and vulnerable. I think it was one of his first roles and he learned to ride horseback on the set. I would die to get it, too. One might find it somewhere on VHS, but I don't even think it came out on DVD. On Youtube, I recently joined up to get a channel page, so I could save playlists, share videos, etc. and then I joined the KSAS channel page; which stands for 'Kenneth Branagh Appreciation Society'. I love Sean O'Casey's play "Shadow of a Gunman"; Ken plays Donal and does a terrific job. I would die to own this production, too. It is very well done and inspired me to buy a book of O'Casey's plays. I am presently reading "The Plow and the Stars". I also just watched "The Lady's Not for Burning" which was very good.

He is even more than adorable in "The Woodlanders". He is so sensitive and sweet and heartbroken; it tears you up inside. You would love him in that film. I love that book and that movie, although the US release of the DVD is suppose to be cut some, from the original British version; I still enjoy it emensely. I own that "Tess" as well and love it; another film I have seen repeatedly. I am trying to get all/most of the Hardy books on film and all the Lawrence books/and/or short stories on film. I have a pretty good collection so far. I also have the newer version of "Sons and Lovers". It is quite good. I have nearly all Kenneth Branagh's films, except the really rare ones that are impossible to find. But then we should not say 'impossible', right?

I've seen an older (at least I think it's older) version of "The Lady's Not for Burning" on TV with Richard Chamberlain in the leading male role. I love that play. Would love to own it.

Well, I think I do like the film; the moors are amazing with their desolation and austerity. It's funny; I like the actor Rupert Graves and in this production I am not liking his performance that much; I feel he is overplaying the part. I guess that disappointed me right off. Of course, he is playing the abusive husband. Usually, I have found him somewhat appealing, but in this film, I can't see what she saw in him from the beginning, so that part is bugging me a bit. Did you see the film yet? I saw "Bleak House", too and I liked it very much. I thought all the acting was top-notch. My library got that one in so it was free rental.

That is a good way of describing it....delicate it is. I love the fine nuanced performances, especially Anton Walbrook. He was amazing and so complex.

I most likely will end up buying the film eventually, too; it's such a fine production and I love Sturbridge as a director. He directed "Shackelton", which is another of my favorites starring Ken B. I have seen BHR advertised recently and it was not that expensive. I will keep in-mind that the score is good. I can't recall it now, but can refresh my memory by watching some video excerpts on Youtube.

:lol:Absolutely, positively, 20 times, at least! I watch it every couple of months; seriously, I do. I usually watch it right through, too....all 4 hours! I purchased it prior to it's release, and was part of an online campaign; I also watch all my Branagh films repeatedly. I quite honestly think his finest and most perfect production is still "Henry V" - it is absolute perfection! But "Hamlet" is so enjoyable, even if it is a tragedy. I am forever fascinated with the inner workings of Hamlet's mind and Branagh pulls that off spendidly. He worked up to this perfection from all his former stage roles and it shows. He is the mature Hamlet in this film.

Yes, someone mentioned this older version on Youtube. I love Richard Chamberlain. I bet it was great. I am not sure you can see the production with Ken B, unless you join that KBAS group on Youtube. First, you have to join Youtube, which is free of course to sign up. I love it now that I did so. It is easier to share videos and productions with your friends. Let me know if you sign up and I will aid you if you need it. You can format you page over there to look really lovely. You could be all scarlett colored motifs. I have a Ken Branagh blue (like his eyes) page presently, but I had a "Boy in the Bush" KB page not long ago, since green worked well for St. Patrick's Day.

Definitely, put it back on your list and ROTN is a fine book, too. I loved both novels. I love the Hallmark production of ROTN. It actually stars a very young Katherine Zeta-Jones as Eustashia. She is quite good in the role. Clive Owen plays Wildeve and Stephen McIntosh plays the Reddleman; I just love him. It is a very good production and should be available on Amazon. I will check for you. The area where it was filmed is amazing; very austere and atmospheric.

Yes! That's the spirit! I'm an optimist, too. At least, I got to see some rare Lawrence and Branagh stuff on Youtube. Yes, you mentioned about the short stories before and we all have said the same thing. I have all the stories now, but had to buy 'used' paperbacks to achieve all three parts of the full collection. One of my books is sad; absolutely falling appart.:(
