Dejosc, BRAVO on the Tenacious D!
I've had this CD for quite a while but I've been listening to that one for two days straight now, and I just looked this thread and saw you put "Tribute" up there. I love them...and the dialogue in between songs is priceless...
"But I told you to put the bendy thing in there!!!"
"Oh yeah, you did...sh*t!"...LOL.

I'll name three musical artists who I think have great, poetic lyrics - so good I'm not sure I can pick specific favorite songs at the moment:
Bob Dylan (obvious)
Dar Williams
Coldplay
-
The bands that have the kind of lyrics I love: (not in any order)
Pink Floyd
Radiohead
Placebo
Joy Division
Sonic Youth
David Bowie
Patti Smith
The Cure
Manic Street Preachers
Especially Smith's lyrics are very poetic
Well, they *are* poems, really

Ok, I know that write about U2 the whole time (good for you that you don't know me, because I also talk about them all the time. I just can't help it :D) so my opinion is subjective but I really think that this song (just like a lot of others by them :)) has exceptional lyrics:
U2 - Acrobat
Don't believe what you hear
Don't believe what you see
If you just close your eyes
You can feel the enemy
When I first met you girl
You had fire in your soul
What happened your face
Of melting in snow
Now it looks like this
And you can swallow
Or you can spit
You can throw it up
Or choke on it
And you can dream
So dream out loud
You know that your time is coming 'round
So don't let the bastards grind you down
No, nothing makes sense
Nothing seems to fit
I know you'd hit out
If you only knew who to hit
And I'd join the movement
If there was one I could believe in
Yeah I'd break bread and wine
If there was a church I could receive in
'cause I need it now
To take a cup
To fill it up
To drink it slow
I can't let you go
I must be an acrobat
To talk like this
And act like that
And you can dream
So dream out loud
And don't let the bastards grind you down
Oh, it hurts baby
(What are we going to do now it's all been said)
(No new ideas in the house and every book has been read)
And I must be an acrobat
To talk like this
And act like that
And you can dream
So dream out loud
And you can find
Your own way out
You can build
And I can will
And you can call
I can't wait until
You can stash
And you can seize
In dreams begin
Responsibilities
And I can love
And I can love
And I know that the tide is turning 'round
So don't let the bastards grind you down

Scatterbrain, I totally agree with you about Pink Floyd's lyrics. 'Echoes' that you posted just sent shivers down my spine, without even having to recall the amazing music.
"Famous Blue Raincoat" - Leonard Cohen
it's four in the morning, the end of december
i'm writing you now just to see if you're better
new york is cold, but i like where i'm living
there's music on clinton street all through the evening.
i hear that you're building your little house deep in the desert
you're living for nothing now, i hope you're keeping some kind of record.
yes, and jane came by with a lock of your hair
she said that you gave it to her
that night that you planned to go clear
did you ever go clear?
ah, the last time we saw you you looked so much older
your famous blue raincoat was torn at the shoulder
you'd been to the station to meet every train
and you came home without lili marlene
and you treated my woman to a flake of your life
and when she came back she was nobody's wife.
well i see you there with the rose in your teeth
one more thin gypsy thief
well i see jane's awake --
she sends her regards.
and what can i tell you my brother, my killer
what can i possibly say?
i guess that i miss you,
i guess i forgive you
i'm glad you stood in my way.
if you ever come by here, for jane or for me
your enemy is sleeping, and his woman is free.
yes, and thanks, for the trouble you took from her eyes
i thought it was there for good so i never tried.
and jane came by with a lock of your hair
she said that you gave it to her
that night that you planned to go clear --
sincerely, l. cohen

Just the right Bullets - Tom Waits
There is a light in the forest
There's a face in the tree
I'll pull you out of the chorus
And the first one's always free
You can never go a hunting
With just a flintlock and a hound
You won't go home with a bunting
If you blow a hundred rounds
It takes much more than wild courage
Or you'll hit just the tattered clouds
You must have just the right bullets
And the first one's always free
You must be careful in the forest
Broken glass and rusty nails
If you're to bring back something for us
I have bullets for sale
Why be a fool when you can chase away
Your blind and your gloom
I have blessed each one of these bullets
And they shine just like a spoon
To have sixty silver wishes
Is a small price to pay
They'll be your private little fishes
And they'll never swim away
I just want you to be happy
That's my only little wish
I'll fix your wagon and your musket
And the spoon will have it's dish
And I shudder at the thought of your
Poor empty hunter's pouch
So I'll keep the wind from your barrel
And bless the roof of your house
-
I LOVE that Tom Waits song.

The classic Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen (A Night At The Opera)
Is this the real life? Is this just fantasy?
Caught in a landslide, No escape from reality
Open your eyes, Look up to the skies and see,
I'm just a poor boy, I need no sympathy
Because I'm easy come, easy go, Little high, little low
Any way the wind blows doesn't really matter to me, to me
Mama, just killed a man, Put a gun against his head
Pulled my trigger, now he's dead
Mama, life had just begun
But now I've gone and thrown it all away
Mama, ooh, Didn't mean to make you cry
If I'm not back again this time tomorrow
carry on, carry on as if nothing really matters
Too late, my time has come
Sends shivers down my spine, body's aching all the time
Goodbye, ev'rybody, I've got to go
Gotta leave you all behind and face the truth
Mama, ooh, I don't want to die
sometimes wish I'd never been born at all
I see a little silhouetto of a man
Scaramouche, Scaramouche, will you do the Fandango
Thunderbolt and lightning, very, very fright'ning me
(Galileo.) Galileo. (Galileo.) Galileo, Galileo figaro
Magnifico. I'm just a poor boy, nobody loves me
He's just a poor boy from a poor family
Spare him his life from this monstrosity
Easy come, easy go, will you let me go
Bismillah! No, we will not let you go
(Let him go!) Bismillah, we will not let you go
(Let him go!) Bismillah, we will not let you go
(Let me go.) Will not let you go
(Let me go.) Will not let you go. (Let me go.) Ah
No, no, no, no, no, no, no.
(Oh mama mia, mama mia.) Mama mia, let me go
Beelzebub has a devil put aside for me, for me, for me
So you think you can stone me and spit in my eye
So you think you can love me and leave me to die
Oh, baby, can't do this to me, baby
Just gotta get out, just gotta get right outta here
Nothing really matters, Anyone can see
Nothing really matters
Nothing really matters to me
Anyway the wind blows

Earlier today, though originally composed on piano, I learned the below song on guitar. Having loved Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds for long now, I suppose I never noticed the depth of the lyrics to "Into My Arms;" parts of the song seemed always very religious to me, but I discovered a further message in the song (to me).
Into My Arms
I don't believe in an interventionist God
But I know, darling, that you do
But if I did I would kneel down and ask Him
Not to intervene when it came to you
Not to touch a hair on your head
To leave you as you are
And if He felt He had to direct you
Then direct you into my arms
Into my arms, O Lord
Into my arms, O Lord
Into my arms, O Lord
Into my arms
And I don't believe in the existence of angels
But looking at you I wonder if that's true
But if I did I would summon them together
And ask them to watch over you
To each burn a candle for you
To make bright and clear your path
And to walk, like Christ, in grace and love
And guide you into my arms
Into my arms, O Lord
Into my arms, O Lord
Into my arms, O Lord
Into my arms
But I believe in Love
And I know that you do too
And I believe in some kind of path
That we can walk down, me and you
So keep your candle burning
And make her journey bright and pure
That she will keep returning
Always and evermore
Into my arms, O Lord
Into my arms, O Lord
Into my arms, O Lord
Into my arms
(Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds)

Watching someone stop breathing.
Feel their arms and palms releasing.
The color, the smell of the skin,
All of this with your fingerprints.
And there isn't a thing that they can do.
Drive drive drive drive,
I don't want to get caught.
We'll say, we'll say we're innocent.
And there is enough to prove we're not.
They will believe anything.
I'm packing all my clothes and never going to go home again.
There isn't one thing we forgot.
You'll see, we'll get away with this.
My jeans, your shoes, we'll throw away everything we used.
But there's still your worried mouth
To match your worried eyes.
The only two things left to find.
There's no compromise.
So remember this.
Your hands are lies.
It's too late for riffs.
We'll go home and close the door,
then pull the sheets up to our heads and sleep.

When Doves Cry Lyrics
How can you leave me standing
alone in a world that is so cold?
Maybe I’m just too demanding.
Maybe I’m just like my father: too bold.
Maybe I’m just like my mother.
She’s never satisfied.
Why do we scream at each other?
This is what it sounds like when doves cry.
Yes, they cry, oh they cry.
How could you leave me standing
alone in a world that’s so cold?
Maybe I’m just too demanding.
Maybe I’m just like my father: too bold.
Maybe I'm just like my mother.
She’s never satisfied.
Why do we scream at each other?
This is what it sounds like
When doves cry.
This is what it sounds like
This is what it sounds like
This is what it sounds like
Oh ah, oh ah
Dream, if you can, a courtyard, an ocean of violence in bloom.
Animals strike curious poses.
They feel the heat, the heat between me and you.
Maybe I'm just like my mother.
She’s never satisfied.
She’s never satisfied.
Why do we scream at each other?
This is what it sounds like when doves cry.
Doves cry
You know that they cry
You know that they cry
You know that they cry
You know that they cry
You know that they cry
How could you leave me standing
( You know that they cry )
alone in a world that’s so cold?
( You know that they cry )
Maybe I’m just too demanding.
( You know that they cry )
Maybe I’m just like my father: too bold.
( You know that they cry )
Maybe I'm just like my mother.
( You know that they cry )
She’s never satisfied.
( You know that they cry )
Why do we scream at each other?
( You know that they cry )
This is what it sounds like
When doves cry.
I was watching this music video earlier, so decided to post these lyrics.

Frankly, Bob Dylan does it for me. There are days when i'm listening to Bobby and i say, ****, this mother ****er ruined music for me. I try to play other tunes and artists but sometimes, they just don't measure up. His plethora of songs talks about everything from lust to prolific and profound observations, from a tickling of the senses to self-pity. Stories too. So, here is a not so acclaimed song of his that i was listening to when i came upon this thread. It doesn't carry the weight of so many of his songs... rather, I quote it for the reason that he did not need to be heavy, you want heavy listen to 'ballad of a thin man', 'its alright ma (i'm only bleeding),' 'a hard rain,' 'shelter from the storm' 'tangled up in blue,' 'visions of johana,'
there is too many, and to offset the weight there are songs like Peggy Day:
Peggy Day stole my poor heart away,
By golly, what more can I say,
Love to spend the night with Peggy Day.
Peggy Night makes my future look so bright,
Man, that girl is out of sight,
Love to spend the day with Peggy Night.
Well, you know that even before I learned her name,
You know I loved her just the same.
An' I tell 'em all, wherever I may go,
Just so they'll know, that she's my little lady
And I love her so.
Peggy Day stole my poor heart away,
Turned my skies to blue from gray,
Love to spend the night with Peggy Day.
Peggy Day stole my poor heart away,
By golly, what more can I say,
Love to spend the night with Peggy Day.
Love to spend the night with Peggy Day.
I really never felt a need to defend bob dylan with an acclaimed song of his, they speak for themselves. The truth is bob was known for more then just his amazing songs. His ability to plow through his past, and continually morph into a volatile being who would not be pinned down, no matter the measures, a jester of sorts, is another art he mastered. Bob Dylan was a true bard, and if you ever take the time to study him he is a rather dauntingly haunting figure. While you thought you knew yourself and had a grip on things; you thought you had some others beat, Dylan makes you look childish, infantile. And mr. dylan continues to weave a web of contradictions to speed bump your assumptions and failing thought.
Like the song lyrics above compared to 'It's alright ma (i'm only bleeding)'

I dont know how comes that I love the Foo Fighters... I have an acoustic version of Everlong which is so great...here are the words...
Hello
I've waited here for you
Everlong
Tonight
I throw myself into
And out of the red, out of her head she sang
Come down
And waste away with me
Down with me
Slow how
You wanted it to be
I'm over my head, out of her head she sang
Chorus-
And I wonder
When I sing along with you
If everything could ever feel this real forever
If anything could ever be this good again
The only thing I'll ever ask of you
You've got to promise not to stop when I say when
She sang
Verse 2-
Breathe out
So I could breathe you in
Hold you in
And now
I know you've always been
Out of your head, out of my head I sang
Chorus-
And I wonder
When I sing along with you
If everything could ever feel this real forever
If anything could ever be this good again
The only thing I'll ever ask of you
You've got to promise not to stop when I say when
She sang
Chorus-
And I wonder
If everything could ever feel this real forever
If anything could ever be this good again
The only thing I'll ever ask of you
You've got to promise not to stop when I say when
She sang

These are relatively new songs but I like them very much so I want to share with you.
"100 Years" by Fight For Fighting
I'm 15 for a moment
Caught in between 10 and 20
And I'm just dreaming
Counting the ways to where you are
I'm 22 for a moment
She feels better than ever
And we're on fire
Making our way back from Mars
15 there's still time for you
Time to buy and time to lose
15, there's never a wish better than this
When you only got 100 years to live
I'm 33 for a moment
Still the man, but you see I'm a they
A kid on the way
A family on my mind
I'm 45 for a moment
The sea is high
And I'm heading into a crisis
Chasing the years of my life
15 there's still time for you
Time to buy, Time to lose yourself
Within a morning star
15 I'm all right with you
15, there's never a wish better than this
When you only got 100 years to live
Half time goes by
Suddenly you’re wise
Another blink of an eye
67 is gone
The sun is getting high
We're moving on...
I'm 99 for a moment
Dying for just another moment
And I'm just dreaming
Counting the ways to where you are
15 there's still time for you
22 I feel her too
33 you’re on your way
Every day's a new day...
15 there's still time for you
Time to buy and time to choose
Hey 15, there's never a wish better than this
When you only got 100 years to live
"Live Like You Were Dyin'" by Tim McGraw
He said I was in my early 40's,
With a lot of life before me,
And a moment came that stopped me on a dime.
I spent most of the next days, lookin' at the x-rays,
Talkin' 'bout the options and talkin' 'bout sweet time.
Asked him when it sank in, that this might really be the real end.
How's it hit ya, when you get that kind of news.
Man what ya do.
And he says,
[Chorus]
I went sky divin',
I went rocky mountain climbin',
I went 2.7 seconds on a bull name Fumanchu.
And I loved deeper,
And I spoke sweeter,
And I gave forgiveness I've been denying,
And he said someday I hope you get the chance,
To live like you were dyin'.
He said I was finally the husband,
That most the time I wasn't.
And I became a friend a friend would like to have.
And all the sudden goin' fishing,
Wasn't such an imposition.
And I went three times that year I lost my dad.
Well I finally read the good book,
And I took a good long hard look at what I'd do
If I could do it all again.
And then.
[Chorus]
Like tomorrow was a gift and you've got eternity
To think about what you do with it,
What could you do with it, what can
I do with with it, what would I do with it.
[Chorus]
Sky divin',
I went rocky mountain climbin',
I went 2.7 seconds on a bull name Fumanchu.
And I loved deeper,
And I spoke sweeter,
And I watched an eagle as it was flyin'.
And he said someday I hope you get the chance,
To live like you were dyin'.
To live like you were dyin'.
To live like you were dyin'.
To live like you were dyin'.
To live like you were dyin'.
"The Reason" by Hoobastank
I'm not a perfect person
There's many things I wish I didn't do
But I continue learning
I never meant to do those things to you
And so I have to say before I go
That I just want you to know
I've found a reason for me
To change who I used to be
A reason to start over new
and the reason is you
I'm sorry that I hurt you
It's something I must live with everyday
And all the pain I put you through
I wish that I could take it all away
And be the one who catches all your tears
Thats why i need you to hear
I've found a reason for me
To change who I used to be
A reason to start over new
and the reason is You [x4]
I'm not a perfect person
I never meant to do those things to you
And so I have to say before I go
That I just want you to know
I've found a reason for me
To change who I used to be
A reason to start over new
and the reason is you
I've found a reason to show
A side of me you didn't know
A reason for all that I do
And the reason is you

My all time favourite songwriter is Jim Steinman. I know many people may not have heard of him, but you may know some of his songs (Bat Out Of Hell, Total Eclipse Of The Heart, It's All Coming Back To Me, and lyrics to Holding Out For A Hero and No Matter What).
I have literally grown up with all these songs, and I'll give a couple of examples from the top of my head of some favourite lyrics before I go!
"I can make the run and stumble/ I can make the final block/ I can make every tackle at the sound of the whistle/ I can make all the stadiums rock!"
Air Supply, Making Love Out Of Nothing At All
"You'll never find your gold on a sandy beach/ You'll never drill for oil on a city street/ I know you're looking for a ruby in a mountain of rocks/ But there ain't no coup deville hiding at the bottom of a crackerjack box"
Meat Loaf, Two Out Of Three Ain't Bad
"If an angel broke his wings, could he come to you for parts?/ I need a couple of wings, I need a reason to soar./ If the devil lost his fire, could he count on you for sparks."
Bonnie Tyler, Ravishing
"I've got a dream about an angel on the beach/ And the perfect waves are starting to come./ His hair is flying out in ribbons of gold/ And his touch, he's got the power to stun./ I've got a dream about an angel in the forest/ Enchanted by the edge of a lake./ His body's flowing in the jewels alive/ And the earth below him is starting to shake."
Fire Inc, Tonight is What It Means to Be Young, Streets of Fire OST
Good grief, is that the time?! Off I pop! :p
