Dylan's lyrics are timeless.
My grad slogan was "Twenty Years of Schooling and They Put You on the Day Shift".
It wasn't really, but I like to tell people that.
Anything, Anytime, Anywhere - Bruce Cockburn
Tomorrow may come, it usually does
Don't know what it will bring to the two of us
I just want you to know
What I'm ready to do
Anything, anytime, anywhere
For you
When I'm holding you tight, you give me the power
To burn like a torch in the darkest hour
Tell me what you need
I will surely come through
Anything, anytime, anywhere
For you
Passion runs deep, it's scary sometimes
When it's larger than life or your peace of mind
It's got me all the same
And I'm not sorry that's true
Anything, anytime, anywhere
For you
Anything, anytime, anywhere
For you
Anything, anytime, anywhere
For you
Understanding Nothing
High above valley,
Above deep shade coloured with the calls of cuckoos,
The ring of coppersmith's hammer high in the hiss of the wind
Wind filled with spirits and bright with the jangle of horse bells
After a crisp night crammed with stars
It's morning
Over the scratched-up soil, scorched-earth wasted,
Long shadows lead women bearing water
I watch the sway of skirts,
Think of moist spice forests -
Too many pictures
Swirling
Vertigo
Momentum of civilizations
Threw me too far over this time-simple landscape
And I hang here
In this mountain light
A balloon blown full of darkness -
Got to let this ballast go
Got to float upward
Till I burst
Weavers' fingers flying on the loom
Patterns shift too fast to be discerned
All these years of thinking
Ended up like this
In front of all this beauty
Understanding nothing
Rhododendrons in bloom, sharp against
Spring snow
Remind me of another time
In japanese temple -
There was a single orange blossom
At the wrong time of year -
Seemed like a sign -
When I looked again
It was gone
Weavers' fingers flying on the loom
Patterns shift too fast to be discerned
All these years of thinking
Ended up like this in front of all this beauty
Understanding nothing
Hi there.
Most of you would not know me cause I'm kinda new. No one seems to be saying much about song lyrics. Just want to know how you guys react to it.
Well here are some that really inspired me.
"There's a sign on the wall but she wants to be sure
And you know sometimes words have two meanings
In the tree by the brook there's a songbird who sings
Sometimes all of our thoughts are misgiven
There's a feeling I get when I look to the west
And my spirit is crying for leaving
In my thoughts I have seen rings of smoke through the trees
And the voices of those who stand looking
There's a feeling I get when I look to the west
And my spirit is crying for leaving
In my thoughts I have seen rings of smoke through the trees
And the voices of those who stand looking "
Stairway to heaven by Led Zeppelin.
And here is another,
Beyond the horizon of the place we lived when we were young
In a world of magnets and miracles
Our thoughts strayed constantly and without boundary
The ringing of the division bell had begun
Along the long road and on down the causeway
Do they still meet there by the cut
There was a ragged band that followed in our footsteps
Running before time took our dreams away
Leaving the myriad small creatures trying to tie us to the ground
To a life consumed by slow decay
The grass was greener
The light was brighter
With friends surrounded
The nights of wonder
Looking beyond the embers of bridges glowing behind us
To a glimpse of how green it was on the other side
Steps taken forwards but sleepwalking back again
Dragged by the force of some inner tide
At a higher altitude with flag unfurled
We reached the dizzy heights of that dreamed of world
****
Encumbered forever by desire and ambition
There's a hunger still unsatisfied
Our weary eyes still stray to the horizon
go down this road we've been so many times
The grass was greener
The light was brighter
The taste was sweeter
The nights of wonder
With friends surrounded
The dawn mist glowing
The water flowing
The endless river
High Hopes by Pink Floyd
Hope at least some of you share my view on these lyrics. And if not, then we would have conflict of opinions.
That would be fun too right!
I love this idea as a thread and I'm going to share some of my favourite lyrics. BTW - great choice you made there - you can't go wrong with Led Zeppellin or Pink Floyd:D
Hi khelder. Welcome to the forum! :)
This is one of my favourite song too. Its lyrics are lovely as well as the music.
Please, check out this thread to see some more amazing lyrics. :)
This is another favourite:
As Time Goes By - Frank Sinatra
You must remember this
A kiss is still a kiss
A sigh is still (just) a sigh
The fundamental things apply
As time goes by
And when two lovers woo
They still say: "i love you"
On that you can rely
No matter what the future brings
As time goes by
Moonlight and love songs - never out of date
Hearts full of passion - jealousy and hate
Woman needs man - and man must have his mate
That no one can deny
It’s still the same old story
A fight for love and glory
A case of do or die
The world will always welcome lovers
As time goes by
:)
Hi back Pensive,
That one is pretty nice too. thanks for the welcome and the thread, which by the way have almost covered all my favorite songs. I guess I should have known that you guys would not leave any ground uncovered. Anyways, I dont think anyone mentioned this song, one of my many favorites.
From the very first moment I saw you
Thats when I knew
All the dreams I held in my heart
Had suddenly come true
Knock me over stone cold sober
Not a thing I could say or do
cos baby when Im walking with you now
My eyes are so wide
Like you reached right into my head
And turned on the light inside
Turning on the light
Inside my mind hey
Come on baby its all right
Sunday monday day or night
Written blue on white its plain to see
That rainy shiny night or day
Whats the difference anyway
Baby till your heart belongs to me
If I had some influence girl
With the powers that be
Id have them fire that arrow at you
Like they fired it right at me
And maybe when your heart and soul are burning
You might see
That everytime Im talking with you
Its always over too soon
That everyday feels so incomplete
Till you walk into the room
Say the word now girl
Ill jump that moon hey
Come on baby its ok
Rainy shiny night or day
Theres nothing in the way now
Dont you see
Winter summer day or night
Centigrade of fahrenheit
Baby till your heart belongs to me
Thursday friday short or long
When you got a love so strong
How can it be wrong now mercy me
Jumpin jesus holy cow!
Whats the difference anyhow
Baby till your heart belongs to me
Be Mine by David Grey
And that two lines in bold, i dedicate to you all.
Reviving his career (but not that it went down and out of the music scene - curse everyone who says that!!! Raaarrr!!!!:flare: :flare: ), Jason Mraz "came back" and wrote this to all the goons out to get him and demoralize him. For you!!!!
(one of my favorite lyrics only. Read it, it's fun! If it's your first time to sing it, twisted tongue happening to you is an understatement.)
Wordplay
I've been all around the world
I've been a new sensation
But it doesn't really matter
In this ge-generation
The sophomore slump is an uphill battle
And someone said that ain't my scene
'Cause they need a new song
Like a new religion
Music for the television
I can't do the long division
Someone do the math
For the record label puts me on the shelf up in the freezer
Got to find another way to live the life of leisure
So I drop my top
Mix and I mingle
Is everybody ready for the single and it goes...
[Chorus]
Ha La La La La
Now listen closely to the verse I lay
(Ha La La La La)
It's all about the wordplay
(Ha La La La Love)
The wonderful thing it does
Because, because
I am the wizard of ooh's and ah's and fa-la-la's
Yeah the Mister A to Z
They say I'm all about the wordplay
And it's time to get ill I got your remedy
For those who don't remember me
Well let me introduce you to my style
I try to keep a jumble
And the lyrics never mumble
When the music's makin' people tongue-tied
You want a new song
Like a new religion
Music for the television
I can't do the long division
Someone do the math
For the people write me off like I'm a one-hit wonder
Gotta find another way to keep from goin' under
I pull out the stops
Got your attention
I guess it's time again for me to mention
The wordplay
Repeat chorus
I built a bridge across the Stream of Consciousness
It always seems to be a-flowin'
But I don't know which way my brain is goin'
All the ryhmin' and the timin'
Keeps the melodies inside me
And they're comin'
'Til I'm running out of air
Are you prepared to take a dive into the deep end of my head
Are you listening to a single word I've said
Ha La La La La
Listen closely to the words I say
Ha La La La La
I'm stickin' to the wordplay
Ha La La La Love
The wonderful thing it does
Because, because
I am the wizard of ooh's and ah's and fa-la-la's
Yeah the Mister A to Z
They say I'm all about the wordplay
Ha La La La La
I'm all about the wordplay
Ha La La La La
Stickin' with the wordplay
Ha La La La Love
I love the wonderful thing it does
Because, because
The ooh's and ah's and fa-la-la's fall back in love
For the Mister A to Z they say
Is all about the wordplay

Somewhere in the Middle
This is a video from Dishwalla entitled Somewhere in the Middle. Listen to J.R. Richards' voice and melt.
Manfred Mann's Earth Band
Blinded By The Light
Madman drummer bummers
Indians in the summer
With a teenage diplomat
In the dumps with the mumps
As the adolescent pumps
His way into his hat
With a boulder on my shoulder
Feeling kinda older
I tripped a merry-go-round
With the very unpleasing
Sneezing and wheezing
The calliope crashed to the ground
CHORUS
Blinded by the light
Wrapped up like a deuce
Another runner in the night
Blinded by the light
She got down but she never got tight
She's gonna make it through the night
Some silicone sister
With her manager mister
Told me I've got what it takes
She said, I'll turn you on sonny to something strong
Play the song with the funky break
And go-kart Mozart
Was checking out the weather chart
To see if it was safe outside
And little Early Pearly
Came by in her curly-wurly
And asked me if I needed a ride
CHORUS
Mama always told me not to look into the eyes of the sun
'Cause mama, that's where the fun is
Some brimstone baritone
Anticyclone rolling stone
Preacher from the east
Says dethrone the dictaphone
Hit it in the funnybone
That's where they expect it least
And some new mown chaperone
Was standing in the corner
Watching the young girls dance
And some fresh-sown moonstone
Was playing with his frozen zone
Reminding him of romance
The calliope crashed to the ground
CHORUS
This one is from probably one of the best bands in history-Coldplay
God Put A Smile Upon Your Face
Where do we go nobody knows?
I've gotta say I'm on my way down
God give me style and give me grace
God put a smile upon my face
Where do we go to draw the line?
I've gotta say I wasted all your time, honey honey
Where do I go to fall from grace?
God put a smile upon your face
Yeah
And ah
When you work it out I'm worse than you
Yeah
When you work it out I wanted to
And ah
When you work out where to draw the line
Your guess is as good as mine
Where do we go nobody knows?
Don't ever say you're on your way down when
God gave you style and gave you grace
God put a smile upon your face
Accident and Emergency by Patrick Wolf
So come on
Give me the worst and then again
I'm feeling braver than I've ever been
From the skull down to the feet
all of the blood and sweat and meat
and for
Accident Emergency
Terrorist
Catastrophe
Dump this agony and misery
give me
Accident and Emergency
So what happnes when you lose everythin'
You just carry on and with a grin,
Sing!
For all that lovelife has to bring,
And just get yourself back into the ring,
Knock us out,
For
Accident and Emergency,
Terrorists,
Catastrophy,
From this agony and misery,
Hold on for
Accident and Emergency
'Coz if you never lose,
How you gonna know when you've won
And if it's never dark,
How you gonna know the sun,
When it shines,
Got to let it shine,
Accident and Emegency x5
Bring it out,
The best in me.
One of the first songs that came to mind was 'Perfect' from Jagged Little Pill by Alanis Morrisette:
Sometimes is never quite enough
If you're flawless, then you'll win my love
Don't forget to win first place
Don't forget to keep that smile on your face
Be a good boy
Try a little harder
You've got to measure up
And make me prouder
How long before you screw it up
How many times do I have to tell you to hurry up
With everything I do for you
The least you can do is keep quiet
Be a good girl
You've gotta try a little harder
That simply wasn't good enough
To make us proud
I'll live for you
I'll make you what I never was
If you're the best, then maybe so am I
Compared to him compared to her
I'm doing this for your own damn good
You'll make up for what I blew
What's the problem ...... why are you crying
Be a good boy
Push a little farther now
That wasn't fast enough
To make us happy
We'll love you just the way you are if you're perfect
However, I also liked Ben Lee's song 'We're all in this Together'- it brims with optimism:
woke up this morning
i suddenly realized
were all in this together
i started smiling
cos you were smiling
and were all in this together
im made of atoms
youre made of atoms
and were all in this together
and long division
just doesnt matter
cos were all in this together
i saw you walking
in the city
were all in this together
the city's changing
cos we are changing
and were all in this together
every twelve seconds
someone remembers
that were all in this together
in the kitchen
of your rent-control apartment
were all in this together
cmon baby
i dont mean to rush you
i only wanted to reach out and touch you
ive gotta start to open my heart
i know you think
about jumping ship before it sinks
but were all in this together
ask a scientist
its quantum physics
were all in this together
and on the subway
we feel like strangers
but were all in this together
yeah i love you and you love her
and she loves him
but were all in this together
yknow baby
theres never been protection
in all the history of human connection
cmon darling
its alright to show me
you dont ever need to be lonely
once you start to open your heart
i saw you crying
i started crying
cos were all in this together
and then religion
its a big decision
but were all in this together
were all in this together
Also, I was very moved by this song, "Try not to Breathe" by REM when I first heard it.
I will try not to breathe
I can hold my head still with my hands at my knees
These eyes are the eyes of the old, shivering and bold
I will try not to breathe
This decision is mine. I have lived a full life
And these are the eyes that I want you to remember, oh
I need something to fly over my grave again
I need something to breathe
I will try not to burden you
I can hold these inside. I will hold my breath
Until all these shivers subside,
Just look in my eyes
I will try not to worry you
I have seen things that you will never see
Leave it to memory me. I shudder to breathe
I want you to remember, oh (you will never see)
I need something to fly (something to fly)
Over my grave again (you will never see)
I need something to breathe (something to breathe)
Baby, don't shiver now
Why do you shiver now? (I will see things you will never see)
I need something to fly (something to fly)
Over my grave again. (I will see things you will never see)
I need something to breathe, oh, oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh
I will try not to worry you
I have seen things that you will never see
Leave it to memory me. Don't dare me to breathe
I want you to remember, oh (you will never see)
I need something to fly (something to fly)
Over my grave again (you will never see)
I need something to breathe (something to breathe)
Baby, don't shiver now
Why do you shiver? (I will see things you will never see)
I need something to breathe (something to breathe - I have seen things you will
never see)
I want you to remember
God, that was really long, wasn't it? lol. I see I got a little carried away.
I also forgot to mention "Where the Wild Roses Grow" by Nick Cave and Kylie Minogue. And a lot of Simon and Garfunkel as well, like "I am a Rock" and "My little Town".
This is from one of the best songwriter ever.
I laid on a dune I looked at the sky
When the children were babies and played on the beach
You came up behind me, I saw you go by
You were always so close and still within reach.
Sara, Sara
Whatever made you want to change your mind
Sara, Sara
So easy to look at, so hard to define.
I can still see them playing with their pails in the sand
They run to the water their buckets to fill
I can still see the shells falling out of their hands
As they follow each other back up the hill.
Sara, Sara
Sweet virgin angel, sweet love of my life
Sara, Sara
Radiant jewel, mystical wife.
Sleeping in the woods by a fire in the night
Drinking white rum in a Portugal bar
Them playing leapfrog and hearing about Snow White
You in the marketplace in Savanna-la-Mar.
Sara, Sara
It's all so clear, I could never forget
Sara, Sara
Loving you is the one thing I'll never regret.
I can still hear the sounds of those Methodist bells
I'd taken the cure and had just gotten through
Staying up for day in the Chelsea Hotel
Writing "Sad-Eyed Lady of the Lowlands" for you.
Sara, Sara
Wherever we travel we're never apart
Sara, Sara
Beautiful lady, so dear to my heart.
How did I meet you ? I don't know
A messenger sent me in a tropical storm
You were there in the winter, moonlight on the snow
And on Lily Pond Lane when the weather was warm.
Sara, Sara
Scorpio Sphinx in a calico dress
Sara, Sara
You must forgive me my unworthiness.
Now the beach is deserted except for some kelp
And a piece of an old ship that lies on the shore
You always responded when I needed your help
You gimme a map and a key to your door.
Sara, Sara
Glamorous nymph with an arrow and bow
Sara, Sara
Don't ever leave me, don't ever go.
Sara by Bob Dylan
Vedrana, I love that R.E.M. song, it's one of my favorites of theirs.
Follow My Way ~ Chris Cornell
Little one don't be a fool
I'm a wreck when I look mighty
In euphoria I'm bruised
In confusion next I'm lightning
In complacence I am small
Through oblivion I charge
So follow my way
When I'm not leading anyone
Open and frayed
When you can see that I'm unsure
Out on my way
I'm only pure when I get lost
And you're only needing
When youre finding that I'm not
You're just looking for a boy
Bathed in infrared and sunlight
I'm all polish and reward
When I'm confident I'm hopeless
Just like everybody else
Right before they fall apart
So follow my way
When I am falling from your heart
When I'm in pain
Fever and sweet relief in one
Out on my way
Though I'm not worthy of your trust
Follow me down into a swan dive
All eyes closed tightly
Lowly, slowly now I know I like
Where you go when you're gone
Warm your hands inside my veins
I might be contagious
Through oblivion I charge
Follow my way
When Im useless to your cause
When I derail
Calm in the patience of remorse
Out on my way
Out on my empty open nerves
Instant Pleasure - Rufus Wainwright
:yawnb:
I don't want somebody to love me
Just give me sex whenever I want it
'Cause all I ask for is instant pleasure
Instant pleasure, instant pleasure
You in the traffic for all eternity
How could that speed be where you want to be?
Said don't you really want instant pleasure
Instant pleasure, instant pleasure
Think that all these folks get laid?
Do it cause their pain is great?
What you thinkin' anyways?
If drinkin' coffee's your idea of really cool
You can't expect no crazy chick to notice you
Just sittin there dreamin' instant pleasure
Instant pleasure, instant pleasure
Instant pleasure, instant pleasure
If you want someone a friend to be
Guess you'll have to win the lottery
But till then repeat after me
I don't want somebody to love me
Just give me sex whenever I want it
'Cause all I ask for is instant pleasure
Instant pleasure, instant pleasure
Instant pleasure, instant pleasure
Instant pleasure, instant pleasure
I don't want somebody to love me
I don't want somebody to love me...[/COLOR]
My Wish by Rascal Flatts
I hope that the days come easy and the moments pass slow,
And each road leads you where you want to go,
And if you're faced with a choice, and you have to choose,
I hope you choose the one that means the most to you.
And if one door opens to another door closed,
I hope you keep on walkin' till you find the window,
If it's cold outside, show the world the warmth of your smile,
But more than anything, more than anything,
My wish, for you, is that this life becomes all that you want it to,
Your dreams stay big, and your worries stay small,
You never need to carry more than you can hold,
And while you're out there getting where you're getting to,
I hope you know somebody loves you, and wants the same things too,
Yeah, this, is my wish.
I hope you never look back, but ya never forget,
All the ones who love you, in the place you left,
I hope you always forgive, and you never regret,
And you help somebody every chance you get,
Oh, you find God's grace, in every mistake,
And you always give more than you take.
But more than anything, yeah, and more than anything,
My wish, for you, is that this life becomes all that you want it to,
Your dreams stay big, and your worries stay small,
You never need to carry more than you can hold,
And while you're out there getting where you're getting to,
I hope you know somebody loves you, and wants the same things too,
Yeah, this, is my wish.
I Walk The Line - Johnny Cash
I keep a close watch on this heart of mine
I keep my eyes wide open all the time
I keep the ends out for the tie that binds
Because you're mine, I walk the line
I find it very, very easy to be true
I find myself alone when each day is through
Yes, I'll admit that I'm a fool for you
Because you're mine, I walk the line
As sure as night is dark and day is light
I keep you on my mind both day and night
And happiness I've known proves that it's right
Because you're mine, I walk the line
You've got a way to keep me on your side
You give me cause for love that I can't hide
For you I know I'd even try to turn the tide
Because you're mine, I walk the line
I keep a close watch on this heart of mine
I keep my eyes wide open all the time
I keep the ends out for the tie that binds
Because you're mine, I walk the line
My husband and I laugh at this all time. What does "wrapped up like a deuce" mean? Sounds like "wrapped up like [insert embarrassing hygienne product here].
My independence is calling my name
A doubtful voice divides my faith
My independence only hesitates
An unsure choice I can't embrace
You're gonna have to carve me,
Carve me from stone
Right to the bone or I'll end up alone
Playing the role
Of someone in control
Why do I rush to slow down?
Why do I rush to slow down everything?
Why do I rush to slow down?
Why do I rush to slow down everything?
Chorus:
Will the dice ever roll?
When will I ever know?
Will the plot ever twist
Or will I still resist?
I've been playing the part of a lost realist
My indepednce is turning the page
Tomorrow comes we start to fade
My independence only complicates
It's not enough to meet halfway
You'll have to carve me
Carve me from stone
Right to the bone or I'll end up alone
Playing the role
Of someone in control
Why do I rush to slow down?
Why do I rush to slow down everything?
Why do I rush to slow down?
Why do I rush to slow down everything?
Chorus
Bridge:
I only keep what I give away
I only keep what I give away
Why do I rush to slow down?
Why do I rush to slow down everything?
Why do I rush to slow down?
Why do I rush to slow down
Everything?
Will the dice ever roll
When will I ever know
Will the plot ever twist
Or will I still resist
I've been playing the part of a lost realist

Chuck Berry - "Reelin' and Rockin'"
Reelin' and Rockin'
Sometimes I will, then again I think I won't
Sometimes I will, then again I think I won't
Sometimes I do, then again I think I don't
Well I looked at my watch, it was 9:21
We was at a rock'n'roll dance having nothing but fun
And we reeled, reelin' and a rockin'
We were reelin' and a rockin'
Rollin' till the break of dawn
Well I looked at my watch, it was 9:32
There's nothing I would rather do than dance with you
And we reeled, reelin' and a rockin'
We were reelin' and a rockin'
Rollin' till the break of dawn
Well I looked at my watch, it was 9:43
And everytime I spinned she would spin with me
And we reeled, reelin' and a rockin'
We were reelin' and a rockin'
Rollin' till the break of dawn
Well I looked at my watch, it was 9:54
I said, " Dance ballerina girl, go go go!"
And we reeled, reelin' and a - rockin'
We were reelin' and a rockin'
Rollin' till the break of dawn
Well I looked at my watch, it was 10:05
Man, I didn't know if I was dead or alive
And I was rockin', reelin' and rollin'
We were reelin' and a rockin'
Rollin' till the break of dawn
Well I looked at my watch, it was 10:26
But I'm gonna keep on dancing till I get my kicks
And we reeled, reelin' and rockin'
We were reelin' and a rockin'
Rollin' till the break of dawn
Well I looked at my watch, it was 10:28
I gotta get my kicks before it get too late
And we reeled, reelin' and rockin'
We were reelin' and a rockin'
Rollin' till the break of dawn
Well I looked at my watch, it was 10:29
I had to hold her hand, she was still holding mine
And we reeled, reelin' and a rockin'
We were reelin' and a rockin'
Rollin' till the break of dawn
Well I looked at my watch and to my surprise
I was dancing with a woman that was twice my size
I was reelin', rollin', rockin', reelin'
We were reelin' and a rockin'
Rollin' till the break of dawn
Well I looked at my watch and it was time to go
The bandleader said " We ain't playing no more "
And we reeled, reelin' and a rockin'
We were reelin' and a rockin'
Well till the break of dawn
I was going to post the lyrics to Queens of the Stone Age's Skin on Skin and then I decided that probably wasn't appropriate so I decided to go in a whole different direction instead...
Weary Memory ~ Iron & Wine
Found your mittens behind a box of pictures
You would wear them before I brewed the tea
That's one memory I can easily conjure
A weary memory I can always see
Found your rosary broken into pieces
Every night, by the bed, you'd kiss the beads
Those are moments that I can always relive
Weary memories I can always see
Found a photo of you when we were married
Leaning back on a broken willow tree
That's one memory that I choose to carry
A weary memory I can always see
Possibly my all time favorite lyrics in a rock song:
Quote:
"Who Are You"
The Who
Who are you?
Who, who, who, who?
Who are you?...
I woke up in a Soho doorway
A policeman knew my name
He said "You can go sleep at home tonight
If you can get up and walk away"
I staggered back to the underground
And the breeze blew back my hair
I remember throwin' punches around
And preachin' from my chair
[chorus:]
Well, who are you? (Who are you? Who, who, who, who?)
I really wanna know (Who are you? Who, who, who, who?)
Tell me, who are you? (Who are you? Who, who, who, who?)
'Cause I really wanna know (Who are you? Who, who, who, who?)
I took the tube back out of town
Back to the Rollin' Pin
I felt a little like a dying clown
With a streak of Rin Tin Tin
I stretched back and I hiccupped
And looked back on my busy day
Eleven hours in the Tin Pan
God, there's got to be another way
Who are you?
Ooh wa ooh wa ooh wa ooh wa ...
Who are you?
Who, who, who, who?
Who are you?...
[chorus]
I know there's a place you walked
Where love falls from the trees
My heart is like a broken cup
I only feel right on my knees
I spit out like a sewer hole
Yet still recieve your kiss
How can I measure up to anyone now
After such a love as this?
[chorus]
I didnt want to enter this thread because there are way too many lyrics I love plus we had another one plus who knows who posted what, I'm not going to read through it all... but a wonderful song came out of my shuffled MP3s so I just have to...
The Cure - Prayers for Rain
you shatter me
your grip on me
a hold on me
so dull it kills
you stifle me
infectious sense
of hopelessness and
prayers for rain
i suffocate
i breathe in dirt
and nowhere shines
but desolate
and drab the hours all spent
on killing time again
all waiting for
the rain
you fracture me
your hands on me
a touch so plain
so stale it kills
you strangle me
entangle me
in hopelessness and
prayers for rain
i deteriorate
i live in dirt
and nowhere glows
but drearily and tired
the hours all spent
on killing time again
all waiting for
the rain
MASTERPIECE!
Boots Or Hearts - Tragically Hip
Well I thing we've got a problem here
Her voice doesn't sound right
But I left myself on the answering machine
Said "I'm back in town tonight."
I feel I've stepped out of the wilderness
All squint-eyed and confused
But even babies raised by wolves
They know exactly when they've been used
See when it starts to fall apart
It really falls apart
Like boots or hearts when they starts it really falls apart
Fingers and toes fingers and toes
Forty things we share
Forty one if you include the fact that we don't care
Now we've blocked most of main street
For our faith parade
Everybody in town now will probably all agree
I'm lying in the bed I made
See when it starts to fall apart
It really falls apart
Like boots or hearts when they starts it really falls apart
Now you won't even let me talk to you
We got some air to clear
We'd probably only agree on one thing any way's
That's what the hell is happening here
See when it starts to fall apart
It really falls apart
Like boots or hearts when they starts it really falls apart
Carry On Wayward Son
(Kerry Livgren)
Once I rose above the noise and confusion
Just to get a glimpse beyond the illusion
I was soaring ever higher, but I flew too high
Though my eyes could see I still was a blind man
Though my mind could thnk I still was a mad man
I hear the voices when I'm dreamin', I can hear them say
CHORUS
Carry on my wayward son,
For there'll be peace when you are done
Lay your weary head to rest
Now don't you cry no more
Masquerading as a man with a reason
My charade is the event of the season
And if I claim to be a wise man, it surely means that I don't know
On a stormy sea of moving emotion
Tossed about I'm like a ship on the ocean
I set a course for winds of fortune, but I hear the voices say
CHORUS
Carry on, you will always remember
Carry on, nothing equals the splendor
Now your life's no longer empty
Surely heaven waits for you
CHORUS
That's a great song! Kansas really had some quality stuff. Here's another classic:
Dust in the Wind
I close my eyes, only for a moment, then the moment's gone
All my dreams, pass before my eyes, a curiosity
Dust in the wind, all we are is dust in the wind
Same old song, just a drop of water in an endless sea
All we do, crumbles to the ground though we refuse to see
Dust in the wind, all we are is dust in the wind.
Don't hang on, nothing lasts forever but the earth and sky
It slips away, all your money won't another minute buy
Dust in the wind, all we are is dust in the wind
Dust in the wind, all we are is dust in the wind
Dust in the wind, everything is dust in the wind
^Very interesting (and meaningful) lyrics, what sort of music do Kansas play?
This is from a song called 'The Philosopher', and they're not really sang lol:$
Do you feel what I feel, see what I see, hear what I hear
There is a line you must draw between your dream world and reality
Do you live my life or share the breath I breathe
Lies feed your judgement of others
Behold how the blind lead each other
The philosopher
You know so much about nothing at all
Ideas that fall under shadows of theories that stand tall
Thoughts that grow narrow upon being verbally released
Your mind is not your own,
what sounds more mentally stimulating is how you make your choice
So you preach about how I'm supposed to be, yet you don't you know your own
sexuality
Lies feed your judgement of others
Behold how the blind lead each other
The philosopher
You know so much about nothing at all
One of my all time favorites from The Beatles:
Quote:
A Day in the Life
Lennon/MaCarthy
I read the news today oh boy
About a lucky man who made the grade
And though the news was rather sad
Well I just had to laugh
I saw the photograph
He blew his mind out in a car
He didn’t notice that the lights had changed
A crowd of people stood and stared
They’d seen his face before
Nobody was really sure
If he was from the House of Lords.
I saw a film today oh boy
The English Army had just won the war
A crowd of people turned away
But I just had to look
Having read the book.
I’d love to turn you on
Woke up, got out of bed,
Dragged a comb across my head
Found my way downstairs and drank a cup,
And looking up I noticed I was late.
Found my coat and grabbed my hat
Made the bus in seconds flat
Found my way upstairs and had a smoke,
And somebody spoke and I went into a dream
I heard the news today oh boy
Four thousand holes in Blackburn, Lancashire
And though the holes were rather small
They had to count them all
Not they know how many holes it takes
To fill the Albert Hall.
I’d love to turn you on.
To best of memory:
Gwendolyn Brook's "We Real Cool"
(Seven Pool Players
at the Golden Shovel)
We real cool. We
Skip school. We
Lurk late. We
Strike straight. We
Sing sin. We
Thin gin. We
Jazz June. We
Die soon.
Check out the wording. Very deep and Helen Vendler really got behind GB.
Another offering from the Tragically Hip
Scared
I could make you scared if I want me to
I'm not prepared, but if I have to
He said I can make you scared
It's kinda what I do
If you are prepared to
Here is what I propose to do
Your in Russia
And more than a million works of
Are wisked out to the woods
When the Nazis find the hole place dark
They'd think god's
Left the museum for good
I make you scared, if that's what I do
If you're prepared , if I have to
If I make you scared and you pay me to
If that's the deal
Now here's what I can do for you
Now there's a focus group that can prove
That is all nothing but cold calculations
Tests have shown that suspicious or hostile
Their lives need not be shortened
Truth be told
They can live a long, long wile
Tickled to death by their importance
If you make me scared
If that's what you do
If I'm unclear can I get out of this thing
With me and you
If you feel scared or a bit confused
I gotta say This sounds a little beyond anything I am used to
Now there a precious few
That can prove that at the root
That is all nothing but cold calculations
Clearly entranced you're leaning back now
Defanged destroyer limps into the bay
Down at the beach it's attracting quite a crowd
As kids wade through blood out to it and play
OK you make me scared you did what you set out to do
I'm not prepared , you really had me going there for a minute or two
He said, you make me scared too,
I wasn't through I was getting through
I gotta go, it's been a pleasure doing business with you.
Tuesday's Gone
by Lynyrd Skynyrd
Train roll on, on down the line,
Wont you please take me far away?
Now I feel the wind blow outside my door,
Means Im leaving my woman behind.
Tuesdays gone with the wind.
My womans gone with the wind.
And I dont know where Im going.
I just want to be left alone.
Well, when this train ends Ill try again,
But Im leaving my woman at home.
(chorus)
Tuesdays gone with the wind.
Tuesdays gone with the wind.
Tuesdays gone with the wind.
My womans gone with the wind.
Train roll on many miles from my home,
See, Im riding my blues away.
Tuesday, you see, she had to be free
But somehow Ive got to carry on.
(chorus)
dark is the sunlight
we cast the life together
dark is the sunlight
or im blind forever
Portland Leaveing by Rocky Votolato
The highlighted bit is the whole reason I love the song
come along with me now cause there are things I've been
dying to tell you
the best of the worst things that you never
needed to know
this is the kind of comedy where no one's
laughing, cause it's hard to
I'm a punch line who's punch-drunk
with my fist in a broken mirror
there's a party nearby
I can hear
laughter in the distance and it all comes clear
sounds to simple
love is the only answer
everything else is just a train wreck
I'm gonna stay up all night every night for the rest of my life
till
the lines around my eyes grow deeper and more defined
you might
ask me aren't you dead inside and so damn tired
I'll say I have no idea
I'm not sleeping until after the dying is over
I can hear laughter
in the distance and it all comes clear
sounds to simple
love is the
only answer
when love's a train wreck you're a mistake
Artist: Howie Day Lyrics
Song: Collide Lyrics
The dawn is breaking
A light shining through
You're barely waking
And I'm tangled up in you
Yeah
I'm open, you're closed
Where I follow, you'll go
I worry I won't see your face
Lighting up again
Chorus:
Even the best fall down sometimes
Even the wrong words seem to rhyme
Out of the doubt that fills my mind
I somehow find
You and I collide
I'm quiet you know
You make a first impression
I've found I'm scared to know
I'm always on your mind
Repeat Chorus
Even the best fall down sometimes
Even the wrong words seem to ryhme
Out of the doubt that fills your mind
You finally find
You and I collide
I just watched a filmography of The Beatles' career on cable. With all the intrigues and gossips on their way, they've made it VERY, VERY FAR! Up to now, they're even making millions out of the band's newly released album! They deserve their place in the Guiness' World Records.
A few I love:
Siouxsie And The Banshees - Love in a Void
Too many fools blocking my motion
Clouding my eyes...must be the potion
Spots on my eyes...must be the lotion
Love in a void...it's so numb
Avoid in love...it's so dumb
Love in a void
Too many bigots for my liking
Too many critics...too few writing
Rabid dogs that aren't biting
Love in a void...it's so numb
Avoid in love...it's so dumb
Love in a void
Jaded reputation on which you're staking
Lots of money for the making
For all the stars they're just faking
Love in a void...it's so numb
Avoid in love...it's so dumb
Love in a void
New Order - True Faith
I feel so extraordinary
Something's got a hold on me
I get this feeling I'm in motion
A sudden sense of liberty
I don't care 'cause I'm not there
And I don't care if I'm here tomorrow
Again and again I've taken too much
Of the things that cost you too much
I used to think that the day would never come
I'd see delight in the shade of the morning sun
My morning sun is the drug that brings me near
To the childhood I lost, replaced by fear
I used to think that the day would never come
That my life would depend on the morning sun.
When I was a very small boy
Very small boys talked to me
Now that we've grown up together
They're afraid of what they see
That's the price that we all pay
Our valued destiny comes to nothing
I can't tell you where we're going
I guess there was just no way of knowing
I used to think that the day would never come
I'd see delight in the shade of the morning sun
My morning sun is the drug that brings me near
To the childhood I lost, replaced by fear
I used to think that the day would never come
That my life would depend on the morning sun.
I feel so extraordinary
Something's got a hold on me
I get this feeling I'm in motion
A sudden sense of liberty
The chances are we've gone too far
You took my time and you took my money
Now I fear you've left me standing
In a world that's so demanding
I used to think that the day would never come
I'd see delight in the shade of the morning sun
My morning sun is the drug that brings me near
To the childhood I lost, replaced by fear
I used to think that the day would never come
That my life would depend on the morning sun.
The Birthday Massacre - Remember Me
It's safe to say I'm lonely now
A place called home
Is just a memory away
I know I've done this all before
A thousand silent voices
Begging me to stay
Apologies all left unsaid
Secrets better left unspoken
Dreams are slowly put to bed
Rumors stirred and reawoken
If I try to get away
How long until I'm free
And if I don't come back here
Will you remember me?
It's safe to say I'm nothing now
It's all so quiet but I
Can't forget the sound
A thousand voices call my name
A thousand hands that
Pull me back down to the ground
I turn away from what you are
Denying all that you have given
I find a place that's safe and far
In time all will be forgiven
If I try to get away
How long until I'm free
And if I don't come back here
Will you remember me?
Assemblage 23 - Drive
When chaos reigns without a purpose
When the swell of sound becomes too much
Crushed between the cogs that work us
When I feel I'm slowly losing touch
Sometimes I drive to run from all my demons
Sometimes I drive so I can be alone
Sometimes I drive to see the world in different light
Sometimes I drive for no reason at all
When the walls close in around me
When the ceiling's caving in
When anxiety surrounds me
When my patience is wearing thin
Sometimes I drive to run from all my demons
Sometimes I drive so I can be alone
Sometimes I drive to see the world in different light
Sometimes I drive for no reason at all
The open road unwinds before me
An onyx ribbon spreading out
No idea where I'll be going
Sometimes the journey is what counts
Sometimes I drive to run from all my demons
Sometimes I drive so I can be alone
Sometimes I drive to see the world in different light
Sometimes I drive for no reason at all
Sometimes I drive to run from all my demons
Sometimes I drive so I can be alone
Sometimes I drive to see the world in different light
Sometimes I drive for no reason at all
Thats enough for now I think!
Captain Beefheart "Frownland", simple yet effective:
My smile is stuck
I cannot go back t' yer Frownland
My spirit's made up of the ocean
And the sky 'n the sun 'n the moon
'n all my eye can see
I cannot go back to yer land of gloom
Where black jagged shadows
Remind me of the comin' of yer doom
I want my own land
Take my hand 'n come with me
It's not too late for you
It's not too late for me
To find my homeland
Where uh man can stand by another man
Without an ego flyin'
With no man lyin'
'n no one dyin' by an earthly hand
Let the devils burn 'n the beggar learn
'n the little girls that live in those old worlds
Take my kind hand
My smile is stuck
I cannot go back t' yer Frownland
I cannot go back t' yer Frownland
the song itself is great actually, classic beefheart.
Well, in lieu of Weakerthans recommendation on the 'Now Playing' thread, I'll post some of the outstanding lyrics produced by those fine lads.
These are from a song called Reconstruction Site,
Well I'm lost,
I'm afraid,
Rope tied down to a leaky boat,
To the roof of a car on a road in the dark and it's snowing.
If I'm more,
Then it means less,
Last call for happiness,
I'm your dress near the back of your knees and your slip is showing.
I'm afloat,
In a summer parade,
Up the street in the town that you were born in,
With the girl at the top wearing tulle,
And a Miss Somewhere sash,
Waving like the queen.
Beauty's just another word,
I'm never certain how to spell,
Go tell the nurse to turn the TV back on,
And throw away my misery,
It never meant that much to me,
It never sent a get-well card.
And I broke,
Like a bad joke,
Some bodies' uncle told,
At a wedding reception in 1972.
Where a little boy under a table with cake in his hair,
Stared at the grown-up's feet as they danced and swayed.
And his father laughed and talked on the long ride home.
And his mother laughed and talked on the long ride home.
And he thought about how everyone dies someday.
And when tomorrow gets here where will yesterday be.
And fell asleep in his brand new winter coat.
Buy me a shiny new machine,
That runs on lies and gasoline,
And all those batteries we stole from smoke alarms,
And disassembles my despair,
Never took me anywhere,
It never once bought me a drink.
These are from a song all about my most wonderful of cities :p :cold: called 'One Great City.'
late afternoon another day is nearly done
a darker grey is breaking through a lighter one
a thousand sharpened elbows in the underground
that hollow hurried sound of feet on polished floor
and in the dollar store the clerk is closing up
and counting loonies trying not to say
i hate winnipeg
the driver checks the mirror seven minutes late
crowded riders' restlessness enunciates
the guess who suck, the jets were lousy anyway
the same mood every day
and in the turning lane
someone's stalled again
he's talking to himself
and hears the price of gas repeat his phrase
i hate winnipeg
up above us all,
leaning into sky
our golden business boy
will watch the north end die
and sing 'i love this town'
then let his arching wrecking ball proclaim:
"i...hate...winnipeg"
Honestly, this song is loved by everyone in Winnipeg that's ever heard it, it sums up the love-hate relationship of our city so much. Just a little background that would help you understand this song a bit better, "The Guess Who," is a band from Winnipeg generally regarded as one of the high points in our music scene (though we've also produced BTO and Neil Young). The Jets was the name of our NHL team which we lost and which we all mourn though we could never support it should it come back (which every Winnipegger secretly hopes for). Our golden business boy refers to the 'Golden Boy' a statue that stands atop the Legislative building in downtown Winnipeg (A sign of our better days and a former symbol of our prosperity which has slowly and continues to fade away) watching over downtown (which includes the North End) which is basically crumbling despite all our best efforts. I just can't explain to you how this song makes me feel, you cannot understand without living here and I just wish everyone could feel this song the way I do....
The Moth by Aimee Mann
T
he Moth don't care when he sees The Flame.
He might get burned, but he's in the game.
And once he's in, he can't go back, he'll
Beat his wings 'til he burns them black...
No, The Moth don't care when he sees The Flame.
No, The Moth don't care when he sees The Flame.
The Moth don't care if The Flame is real,
'Cause Flame and Moth got a sweetheart deal.
And nothing fuels a good flirtation,
Like Heat and Anger and Desperation...
No, The Moth don't care if The Flame is real.
No, The Moth don't care if The Flame is real.
So come on, let's go, ready or not
'Cause there's a Flame I know,
Hotter than hot
And with a fuse that's so thoroughly shot...
Away.
The Moth don't care if The Flame burns low,
'Cause Moth believes in an afterglow.
And Flames are never,
Doused completely,
All you really need is a love of...
Heat.
No, The Moth don't care if The Flame burns low.
No, The Moth don't care if The Flame burns low.
Oh, and i loved the first part of your song above TEND.
Especially
Buy me a shiny new machine,
That runs on lies and gasoline,
And all those batteries we stole from smoke alarms,
And disassembles my despair,
Never took me anywhere,
It never once bought me a drink.
The last line is just so fitting and real.
