Truth is fragile
Of the dozens of themes - minor and major - Orwell has for us, I continue to find one of the most intriguing for us is how fragile the truth can be.
And if we look around at the climate of our current culture now, Orwell's warning has never been more important.
But while there can be no denying that the liars and propagandists should be vilified, we have to point out the citizens have to take ownership. In short, we are ultimately responsible. In short, we are complicit.
Fact of the matter is, the propaganda works when there already exists an agenda waiting for - hoping for leadership that legitimizes the hate.
Fact of the matter is, we're responsible when we blindly lap up the lies, spin the truth and use them as our own talking points. And fact of the matter is, we're responsible when we accept the lies, don't hold the liar accountable and refuse to seek the truth.
Fact of the matter is, when we refuse to demand that 2 + 2 does indeed equal 4, every single time, we end up being the real enemy to our own people.
The truth should never be fragile.

Also the 2 plus 2 being true ties into the line where Winston says oceanona maid all facts equations with only variables, meaning they truthfulness relies on other things being true, and because you have no set fact. Nothing can be proven true or false. Like how you can’t show a variables value if you don’t have constants.
