Is there somewhere online Canterbury Tales in modern english?
By searching I found some versions available from Amazon. I haven't read any to help make a choice. I wouldn't mind reading these and discussing them here if you are interested.
Ecker & Crook's translation from 1993 is available online here: http://english.fsu.edu/canterbury/
I would recommend The Wife of Bath to any who have not read it: http://english.fsu.edu/canterbury/wife.html
Read "The Wife of Bath´s Tale". One interesting point is that the tale is told from a feminine perspective of the 13-14 C. The final moral reminded me of a Brazilian saying; "Quem ama o feio, bonito lhe parece" (To the lover´s eyes the ugly will appear as beautiful).
That Brazilian saying fits the tale as I remember it. One doesn't need magic for it to work. Or maybe all of it is magic.
I think the enchantment of love is a kind of magic.
