this was dickens's second book, i think. he wrote it when he was in his early twenties and was very proud of it at the time- it was the first book of short stories that really got his career rolling- it's a great look at london life in the 19th century during the industrial revolution. dickens was working as a reporter at the time and you can really see his journalistic analysing style in the way he describes the characters and surroundings. 'sketches' are just short stories.
