The proles are basically the working class. They work in the factories, on farms, building sites, doing manual work mainly. The party members are basically middle class administrators, office workers or professionals in any occupation that requires a certain amount of education. As the state controls all those types of jobs, you almost certainly need to be a party member to be accepted for them.
