British crime authors
8) Hello,
glad I've found your homepage. Could you tell me the most important British crime authors and their most successful books? I need this information for a summary. Are there any special places in Britain for crime fiction?
Thanks a lot.

Perhaps Sir Arthur Conan Doyle?
-
Although I haven't read all of his books I think Ian Dibdin should perhaps be on your list too.

Thanks for your answers. I'll try some biography about these authors.

Agatha Christie would count, right? She's one of my favorite authors!

Here's a few:
P.D. James--Adam Dalgleish series.
Dorothy L. Sayers--Lord Peter Wimsey series.
Colin Dexter--Inspector Morse series.
Ngaio Marsh (though she's technically from New Zealand...It's a former colony)--Inspector Alleyn series.
John le Carre and Ian Fleming for mystery/spy thrillers. John le Carre is more critically acclaimed though.
Ellis Peters--Brother Cadfael series.
John Mortimer--Rumpole of the Bailey series.
M.C. Beaton--Hamish Macbeth and Agatha Raisin series(es).
That's all I can think of...after this you tend to get into other genres like spy novels and stuff.

Didn't G.K. Chesterton write crime novels? Or atleast mysteries? I'm pretty sure they were mysteries if not directly crime related.

G. K: Chesterton
He wrote Poems, Essays, Non-Fiction and Fiction, e.g.
"The Man Who Knew Too Much".

Ya... and all the Father Brown stories... I'm pretty sure those are detective novels even though Father Brown is not a detective.
