It is not a great novel, but it indicates the greatness that was to come later with his short stories, Gatsby, and Tender is the Night. Every Fitzgerald fan should read it for what it portends, without expecting it to be more than an indication of Fitzgerald's future literary achievements. Fitzgerald's total output is only seven volumes which includes his short story collections and his unfinished novel, The Last Tycoon. Reading his complete works is not a monumental task. If you admire him, why not read his complete works?

IMO, This Side of Paradise is almost as perfect as a novel as you are going to get.
