were fed to the flames by John Murray... Byrons publisher
He considered them too scandalous to publish
It was a huge act of literary vandalism...
Who knows what gems of information and gossip were
contained in those writings.... alas we ll never know !

true, it's always a shame when (presumably) good literature is thrown to flames, but i believe that byron's strong points are in his intimate lyrical works, not the whole decadent, salon-frequenting, whoremonging lifestyle. maybe the writing really were just gossip. byron tended to hold grudges.
