Conrad vs. Poe

I need help with a paper i'm writing...just a simple thought to push me in the right direction.

how did Joseph Conrad's work influence Edgar Allan Poe in American Literature???

shouldn't it be the other way around? Poe was before Conrad, if I do remember correctly.

i know...but my british lititure teacher isn't looking at it that way...
