I agree, next to 'A Study in Scarlet' this is the best long story!
I love this story. In fact, I found an old 1900's book published by W.B. Conkey Co. (Chicago). I have the complete works (new) but there's just something about reading from an old book....
My favorite of the collection - this story gives more attention to Holmes as a character. When was this written in relation to the others? Before or after Doyle grew to hate Holmes?
It was second, after 'A Study in Scarlet', his first ever Sherlock Holmes story.
So I'm guessing he hadn't quite developed his love/hate relationship of Holmes yet. :p
I recently found the complete Sherlock Holmes at my favourite local bookstore at a very cheap price so to my delight i bought it and ran home to read it. I just finished the second novel in it which is The Sign of Four and I loved it. Sherlock Holmes is such an interesting character and Dr Watson is a very good narrator, a very clever choice on Doyle's part to tell the story from his perspective.
While I have only read these two stories so far I have found them simple and yet a very good read and next in the collection is some of his short stories which I look forward to reading.
