Civilization

What is it exactly? Wikipedia says a lot on it, but if you ask me it's just a flimsy layer of veneer on an otherwise primitive species that will eventually succumb to infighting and an inability to accept reality.

We are one species, we are all human, and while there are pockets of acceptance, the norm is intolerance. toward other cultures, toward nature, even toward ourselves. Marx thought Communism was the answer, and in a perfect world I am sure it could be, but this is not a perfect world, and any system is bound to fail to some extent, so we make due with what we have until it all ends.

History has taught us that civilizations are fragile, The Roman Empire, The greeks, the Egyptians, none of the ancient civilizations survived, some evolved into a shadow of their former glory, some imploded, and so on. Sure they left a legacy, but is that all that will go on, a legacy? and even now ours is crumbling, the world is far less stable than people will have you believe, and it is the exact same people that say it is stable that are major proponents of this instability. Why? Because they choose to ignore the problems that plague humanity, clashes of culture, once separate civilizations merging into one global village, Conflict is bound to arise, it can't be ignored since it is already here. It is how we deal with the conflic that will define the future of humanity. I am very displeased with this, as I find that I cannot fully agree with either(prominent) side. The Violence vs. Violence in this conflict drowns the voice of reason, and I for one see reason to be the true future, as did the people that ended the dark ages once hoped, but now, four- to five hundred years later, how much has changed?

Emotions and self righteous belief still go hand in hand and run rampant amongst a dominant vocal part of humanity, and instead of casting of these chains, they embrace them, make them their own and blame others for these very chains that bind them.

Reason does not invalidate emotion, it does not always invalidate belief, it can go hand in hand and moderate, show the other side of the coin.

Too bad reason is thrown out of the door so easily.

Ah an Idealist I see here! :-)

"Imagine there is no religion, no heaven above us or hell below us......you say I am a dreamer..but I am not the only one..."

Yes. Reason should be our master and not emotions.

But emotions makes us human does it not?

Yes, emotions make us human, but in order to not be a slave to them all the time we need reason.

There is this two fold opposing phenomena (not sure exactly what to call it, drive, impulse?) in humans: one to bond and connect with others, and one to distinguish and repel. It happens with those within one's culture and those outside of one's culture. They both must have their biological reasons.

Virgil, yeah, I am aware of the biological origins of our behaviour, truly civilization is just a more complex form of the mating ritual, but then again, we have our intelligence, so why would we have to settle for that?

Now that's a great quote, though I have to say, civilization is way more than just organized mating habits.
