Halls of the Dark Muse

It's that time of year when a pricetag is placed on love

First of all I find it quite funny that I just read another blog quite similar to my own, and I have to say, DanielBenoit, I swear this is total coincidence. I was already planning on posting this before I even read your blog....

I myself have a long time loathing for the vein of commercials for various high end jewelers and diamond sellers and such of the like which always start to pop up this time of the year.

Perhaps it is just because I am unconventional, and low maintenance, and never cared for diamonds, nor gold and have no interest in commercialized, conventional, brand name, fru fru jewelry. I have paid under $30 for just about every piece of jewelry I own, and bought most of it from kiosks at Art and Crafts Fairs, Renn Fairs, Celtic Fairs, or in little mom & pop type of shops when I go out of town.

But I digress..

The issue I have always had with these commercials, is for me they always come off as looking as if women are just high end whores. It is like, oh, well this moment now is so special and memorable, and the happiest day of my life, not because of how much I love you, or because we are here together but because you just flashed something shiny and expensive in front of me.

Now, I will really love you forever since you have proved your love to me by buying me what is probably a 1,000$ + piece of jewelry, now that is what true love is really all about. When the women in these commercials say "I love you" they are not really saying it to the individual, but rather to the inanimate object that they can than go and show off to all their friends.

    Oh what a coincidence!

I completely agree! Even though I'm a guy so I wouldn't have the right percpective, but I've never really understood the concept of giving this really expensive jewlery. If you love someone you can express it in ways far beyond money. If money was the only way, then all you need is to be rich, and bang, all you have to do is go up to some girl and say "I love you, see I bought you this shiny rock".

Now of course giving jewlery to someone you love as just a means to express your love, then that's fine. But once it becomes the symbol of a relationship, then that's just nonsense.

Besides, those Kay jewlers commercials are just a load of sentimental hogwash anyway.

Haha as a woman, I have always found those commericals insulting. But then again I have never been like most women, so what do I know?

In addition to the "shiny and expensive" issue, I find that really the whole flashy conventional jewlary option was in fact quite inpersonal.

If you are just going to give them some generic item of expensive jewlary, you might as well just hand them a wad of cash.

Ha! Sad, but amusing post. I think you're right though DM that those commercials make women look eager to be bought.

It's kind of weird though because those commercial are probably mostly geared towards men (or maybe I'm wrong) because they want men to think: "hey, maybe I can buy some love. I know, I'll go to Kay and overpay for a shiny trinket".

Yes, sadly I think you are right about that.

For me it's the whole Christmas schmere. I like Christmas, don't get me wrong, but I just watched a Hallmark commercial, in which they were delivering something in a truck which had these words on it : love, wonder, hope, etc. Yeah, all that stuff comes from the Hallmark store and Kay's jeweler's and I WILL find under the tree when I awake on Christmas morning.

The whole idea of a Christmas gift was symbolic, anyway. What you're really saying, DM, and I totally agree, is that America has the soul of a whore.

You know Hallmark is responsible for destroying poetry's mainstream reputation. Somehow everyone associates poetry with "roses are red, violets are blue. . . . . "
