The Mephistophelean Manifesto

Literary Snobbishness

Rate this Entry
I don't get it.

Does the very existence of Twilight or Harry Potter somehow stop people from cracking open one of their dusty old tomes?

Is there suddenly less room in the world that producing a variety of reading material threatens to stretch us to some limit?

Does reading old stories somehow make you feel superior to people who read new ones? Why?

I love old books. Shakespeare is my favorite writer to read, I love the vivid imagery, the characters, the side-splitting comedy (Midsummer Night's Dream for example) the absolute tragedy. The man has no equal IN MY OPINION. That doesn't mean that I don't think others should enjoy exactly what makes them happy even if it is Twilight or Harry Potter or See Spot Run for f*cks sake.

As with most other forms of artistic expression, I try to embrace all writers of all genres as best as I can stand to because in my field of study I know Van Gogh, for example, was ridiculed for "fingerpainting". Not trying to say that one writer is as good as another but rather that there is room for all thought despite whether or not we personally like it.

If everyone has the right to read what they want and like or dislike what they want, then why are you Twilight fans always getting mad at people who don't like Twilight? Why don't you just accept the fact that not everyone wants to read Twilight. And stop comaplaining that some people don't like it.

Wow, you didn't read what I said at all. I've actually said numerous times that I'm not a fan of Twilight. Twilight was used here as an example of new literature, as was Harry Potter.

What I've said here is that there is room on the shelf for all likes which I think is what you're trying to say it's just that you feel you have a reason to have a chip on your shoulder about it and I don't.

Yes, I am getting a bit cranky, I do not care if people want to read and like Twilight, but I am just sick of hearing them constnatly talk about it, and whineing and crying anytime someone else does not like it.

Twilight fans seem to want to defend thier right to enjoy the books, and yet jump on your case if you don't happen to like them.

    Exactly!
I read my baby girl 'Poppy Cat loves Rainbows' every day. She loves it. Shakespeare's less durable though, and I get the feeling she isn't interested in it. Every time I start to read it to her, my wee girl tries to rip out the pages and looks around for toys to hit me with. How could she not like reading Shakespeare?

And also, how are we to know what books will become classics after we die? Many people did not become famous worldwide in their own lifetimes.

Matt i completely agree with you.
Personally i would never slag someone off for liking a book i thought was rubbish, nor would i try inforce something on someone who hates something i love. I might argue why i personally see value in it, but thats different to telling someone off.
I also dont get why people who havent read books, but have second hand opinions of them gathered from what small handfuls of people they know have said, tear into people for liking them.

I confess that when someone claims to have read a Twilight book I shout out (quite literally), "Another one's jumping on the bandwagon!"

All the Twilight readers I know diss on Shakespeare every chance they get, so I just return the favor.

I really can't stand book snobs. Now that said I probably enjoy the works that those snobs promote more than the ones they hate, but I understand that there is a place for it all and people are individuals that like all sorts of things. Just because Twilight (I just use this as an example, but I had never even heard of it before the last couple of weeks or certainly read it) may not be "literary" does not mean it is not well written and endearing.

Muse I am a Twilight fan but I know it is not for everyone and you are within your right not to like it and you will not hear a complaint from me ever nor would I ever try and force it (or any other book for that matter) on anyone else.

Dori I recently started to take Shakespeare up again thanks to Virgil and I love that to.

    Matt well said as always.

Oh, this was so confusing if you thought it was Dark Muse's blog at first! :D :D

I agree with you Matt. If you don't like something you don't have to read it. It is a matter of taste anyway. Just because you dislike something doesn't mean it's bad... er, it's subjective, right? I don't like romance novels or legal things, nor do I read much fantasy anymore because when I saw about 9 different mainly popular authors with series about 9 books long, I figured it couldn't vary too much... but that doesn't mean I would wish other people not to have the opportunity to write/ read those things.

And also, as I said about those Fantasy books - there are Fantasy books out there already, and I dunno why Harry Potter would be singled out. You know, dungeons and dragons and such.

I second that Matt. If someone likes books and is reading does it really matter to anyone what they read? As long as they enjoy it right? I think it's a pleasure to listen to someone else's joy in a book, even if it's a book I didn't enjoy. Like when I was a kid and I didn't like yoghurt and I'd see someone eat a yoghurt and think 'Mmm, I wish I liked yoghurt' not 'ugh, that's disgusting!'. When people talk about the books they like that's what I think, I wish I felt the same way
