  1. One of my favourite sayings about lawyers is from Henri de Montherlant's novel Les Celebataires:
".....l'indecent galimatias judiciaire, honte d'une nation civilisee...."
    Which roughly translates as:
"..... the obscene judicial duplicity, shame of a civilised country...."

You will have further confirmation in my book.

    Happy reading.
  2. Well, I can see why. Lawyers always have this bad reputation. But that's what it makes it more fun!
  3. Well Princess, if you are planning on law school, you will find quite a lot in my book about the way the Briitish system works, although there have been a number of changes to the system since the book was published. For example, senior judges can no longer choose who can be a judge, and the Lord Chancellors's Department has been replaced with a Department for Constitutional Affairs. On the surface these are commendable changes but until we return to a system of punitive sentencing, they will have little, if any, effect. I'm afraid the legal profession, and lawyers in general, don't get a good write up in the book, and you will see why when you read it.
  4. Not to worry Mr. Bean! I'm a big girl now and I can handle the extra responsibility. I think it's quite necessary now since the price of education isn't what it used to be. Like a lot of other things, the prices are soaring and we have to make ends meet. And because I'm planning to go to law school, I need to save up. Besides, I love what I'm doing and it doesn't seem that much work if you're enjoying it.

I will surely find time to read your book, for I'm pretty sure it'll be lot of help when I take up international politics.
  5. I will certainly wish you well in your application for the call centre post but it's a pity that your recently gained freedom has ended has ended so abruptly. Of course it is useful to gain some work experience, but after working throughout the year I think students should be entitled to all of their free time during the summer break. It brings me back to what I said earlier about too much pressure being placed on people nowadays.
Anyway, I hope you find time to read Pro Bono Publico which, even so, will be a form of study for you in British politics and the national psyche.

Lots of luck with the job seeking.

    Brian
  6. Hello Mr. Bean!

I haven't gotten around to reading the book yet 'cause it activities seem to keep popping up that demand my attention. Even during vacation I'm busy! But I can't wait to read it!

I'm currently looking for a summer job to help me pay for college. I have an interview with a call center this Tuesday. The whole experience is quite thrilling!

    Wish me luck,
    Princess
  7. Thanks for your Email. Glad you finally got the package I hope you don't find the book too difficult as I recognise that individual countries' politics can sometimes seem a bit esoteric; If you find the political side somewhat bemusing, I hope you will enjoy the non-political, fictitious parts of the book which are meant to entertain rather than inform.
  8. Hello Mr. Bean!

I've received your package and I've sent you an email about it.

    LOve lots,
    Princess
  9. Hello Mr. Bean!

Summer break's finally here! LOL! FREEDOM!

    Ecstatic,
    Princess
  10. Hello Princess,

If what your friend from Singapore has told you is true, I think the parents should be punished. I am not against hitting a child when the occasion demands it, but in the instance you have quoted, there could be no justification for it. Of course, most parents want their children to do well but we all have our limitations.

I think one of the main reasons why orientals attach such importance to education is historical. The rise of Western Civilisation took place after the decline of Eastern Civilisation and the West remained dominant until the American's forced Japan to open up the country during the 19th century. This had unforeseen consequences for the West because the Japanese began to adopt and adapt Western Civilisation to their own ends; leading to the establishment of a Japanese Empire in Korea and Manchuria and to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour and on to WW11 in the Pacific. The post-war takeover by the Communists in China was the next stage of the attempt to re-establish the East as the dominant civilisation and this has led to China becoming an economic force to rival the USA. All of which may seem unconnected to a Singaporan child being beaten for not doing well in a quiz, but the realisation by orientals that the West can beaten at its own game has been taking hold of the individual imagination for some time. I have had much to do with the Chinese for some years and I know that they are very ambitious people who are proud of their ancient heritage. I think it is fairly clear to those who take an interest in these matters that Western Civilisation is in decline and it is also clear to me that the Chinese know it.

I sent the book by air mail so it should be reaching you within the next couple of weeks I should have thought.

    Take care,

    Brian
