thats what the mangment system should be doing, like the rmssynergie, I cant rember what that add on is called but it regulates the amount of stiock you have prodiuces reports and then goes off and automatically orders new stock for you, its cool,
Will also have to see if I can get access to the software they use at work for there stock levels etc (may be custom program tho')
Ooh I did a case study on rmssynergie last year, thought it was brilliant and bascially what I was on about sorta, its bascioally thesame thing its a Mangment sytem focused on retail (an MS if you like) the L was just because Im sort of caught up in it! I think an Open source software ( free!!) would be better though because people like microsoft charge too much for a single shop they foucs on massive orgs. And you are right about the 10 years but basically what Im trying to say is there are programmes that will do it all for you now!
Of course by the time ten years have passed there'll probably be some new fancy system that will do everything for me.
Well ok so its not completly evil, but it is cubersome, ties you down to using specific verions of windows ( make updates a big) and gereally allows you to do less, althoughh you could probably get it to work fairly well, and the main advantage of it would be that you were familiar with it, and its basic ruls are so simple that if things go wrong you could easily rip database to peicies and find the problem.

You dont want an access database belive me crappy things you'd do better with a smaller OSS LMS ( open source software library mangment system) , ( its my 3,000 word prject of the week and so on the brain ) they can be tweaked to make them more whatsitcalled retail auraintated. ( Ive thought this through quite alot since my first year becuse I kind f wanted to do this myself but im crap with money matters, so starting my own buisness not a good idea) you could also have a custom buyilt database like maybe a php one, theroetically fairly simple though Ive yet to actualy attempt it because i quit that unit when I figured I was doing well enough on it I could learn the rest myself from the books, it isnt hard really. but like I said ACCESS Is evil nd you want to stay away from it, it limits your ability to do lots of things, and really and LMS is best because then you can access bibliographic info on the books from the net easier and link up to supplier websites and such!
