Oh puctuation is easy. Remember you need to develop your own style. This expands the possibilities. But ultimately you have to feel natural writing it. To really get the most out of these, you should listen them three times each. You can do it over the course of months. The first just listening. The second looking through the course notes. The third physically writing down the great sentences he reads. By that time you will be a great writer. I'll check my email. It could have gotten mixed up in the fodder.
I listened to the sixth one today, and they're going very well! However I'm a little puzzled at how one would punctuate these cumulative sentences he's so fond of, so I intend to take a look at the lecture notes. I don't deny that they're effective, but it seems like he's cramming too much information into a sentence. Either that or I'm too old-school . I'll see what gives with the incoming ones (I've been trying to listen to one a day, but sometimes it just doesn't happen ). By the way, I sent you an ecard after we saw you, but I got a notice yesterday that you haven't seen it yet. It might be in your spam . If it's not there I'll resend .
How far have you gotten on the lectures? How are they going?
Once you listen through, you might then go through the CDs again with the course outlines in front of you. They really reinforce what you learn, and I also wrote down most of the sample setences to try to absorb the great sentences that have been written. I knew those lectures were perfect for you.
Yes, I agree! I'm finding the whole thing about the propositions really intriguing, and am amazed at all the things they lead to. I'm looking forward to seeing how he'll develop the theme even more (I listened to the third lecture today). And it's fascinating to see how knowledge of grammar really helps tighten one's ability to craft good sentences - he keeps insisting grammar isn't absolutely necessary but I disagree a little bit . Thanks again for them; these are treasures!
It will get even better. Those lectures are perfect for you and your intersts.
Hi Virg! I just finished listening to the first lecture, and am very interested!! I like the lecturer - he's very engaging, and I was rather amazed at the whole "propositions" thing. I'd thought of them as connotations, but never thought of going so deeply as to what, literally, each sentence implies. Fascinating stuff . Thanks again!
I am...working on blogging everything. Washington was fantastic! The Smithsonian rocked, and rocked utterly . Lots and lots of pictures up soon. I did manage to blog about meeting Rich...? I haven't tried the cd's yet - I've been busy catching up on a lot of stuff on the computer. But tomorrow I have some chores and errands to do so I'll be able to listen to them then.
Have you tried those CDs yet? What do you think? And how was Washington? My wife says she talks to you on Facebook. But I only get information second hand.
Oh you're welcome. It was a total pleasure for both of us. My wife couldn't stop talking about how great a time she had. I sent you an email.
