  1. I loved 'L'assommoir' as well as 'Germinal, The Beast Within' (La Bête Humaine), and 'The Belly of Paris' (Le Ventre de Paris). I read 'Nana', but did not find it as interesting as the others, however it was still a great read. I will have to add 'Therese Raquin' to my list.

My favorite Hardy was 'The Mayor of Casterbridge'. I have read 'Jude the Obscure' and 'Far from the Madding Crowd', but have yet to pick up Tess.

Any other suggestions would be appreciated!
  2. I have read Thérèse Raquin which was great. I have heard L'Assmommoir is considered his best. It will be nice to be back reading some French literature.

Ah, Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath was a brilliant read. As for Hardy, I have read Far From the Madding Crowd and Tess, next on the list was Jude but I will consider Mayor of Casterbridge.
  3. I have been fairly slow with my list lately especially in the Zola dept. However, I just finished 'The Belly of Paris' and will soon begin 'The Masterpiece'. I am only 6 books into the series and not in any particular order. L'assommoir is the first book that turned me onto Zola, therefore I think you will thoroughly enjoy it. Let me know how it goes! Had you read any Zola previously?

As for recommendations... I would suggest anything by Zola, Steinbeck's 'Grapes of Wrath', Thomas Hardy's 'Mayor of Casterbridge', and Dicken's 'David Copperfield'.
  4. L'Assommoir is on my list. Hopefully I will get to sit down with Zola in a couple of weeks. Been very busy, I start university in September and have been trying to get a few things read before I start. What about yourself, presently reading anything you would recommend?
  5. Just curious to see if you have gotten any further with Zola?
