Watch out, there's a bunch of Finnish bears coming your way! Otso, kontio, mesikämmen, karhu and nalle are on the way (didn't I warn you we had many words for the beast ancient Finns used to worship as the god of forest )
Of course I am prepared I'm walking the lane of changes. I must be prepared for anything coming my way Loose the bears that I shall be waiting
There's much more to come, are you prepared? Here's another song that doesn't need any translation, because it has no lyrics. It's not instrumental either, it's just human voices. It's Dobbin's Flowery Vale by Rajaton, the same a cappella band that sang Ikävöi, ihminen I linked you a few posts back. And I just can't resist the temptation to link you Butterfly as well, as it's the first song I heard by Rajaton, and also one of my favourite ones. Just an amazingly beautiful piece of music.
Someone I know is on-line replying to my last PM Quite an amount of links I'll have to check I'll let you know when I'm done
I think that as long as I'm talking about the best-known Finnish bands I really should include The Rasmus. Their lead singer Lauri Ylönen was also in Apocalyptica's Bittersweet video. In the Shadows is their most succesful hit so far. Living in a World Withoug You is one of their latest hits. Then I'll have to include Von Hertzen Brothers just because it's the favourite band of a friend of mine I haven't really listened to them, but I guess I should get to know them better. Freedom Fighter is one of the few songs by them I actually know And to prove you that despite all even Finns can write happier music, let me show you Still Alive by The Crash. The video is just great
The lead singer of HIM was already featured in Apocalyptica's Bittersweet video. Join Me is a beautiful song, though very morbid, it actually tells about a lovers' suicide :P No happy songs from Finland, as you can see The Sacrament is not as sad and dark, though. Personally I don't like Ville Valo much (not his looks or his attitude), but he has got an amazing voice, especially in this cover version of Summer Wine. I only linked songs in English, and mostly metal, but Finnish metal is what sells both here and abroad For some reason most of my favourite Finnish bands have male singers, but once I'll get into the Finnish-singing part of this introduction, you'll get to hear some women too But mostly men still, I'll definitely have to translate you some lyrics by Apulanta and Happoradio
Some more Finnish melancholic music for you Carnival of Rust by Poets of the Fall. I should really get to know this band better, as this is a great song and I'm sure they have other ones as well. Then there's Apocalyptica, who play mostly instrumental metal music with cellos. These two songs have lyrics, too. Bittersweet is sung by Ville Valo from HIM and Lauri Ylönen from Rasmus, other internationally successful Finnish bands. I Don't Care is another great song, but there's no official video on Youtube so I had to find another link
Yeah, "Anna" is the imperative form of the verb "antaa" (give), but it's a pure coincidence. Some names that actually mean something: Female: Marja (berry), Satu (fairytale), Tuuli (wind), Pilvi (cloud), Meri (sea) and Helmi (pearl). Male: Sisu (yes, it's a name too, though not a common one ), Otso (an old nickname for a bear, which was worshipped in Finnish mythology), Pyry (a way of snowing) and Kari (underwater rock). But really most names don't have any real meaning in Finnish. Many of the names come from the Bible, so their origins are in other languages (and the meanings too, but Finns aren't usually aware of them), and the spelling has just been "Finnished" Nokia boots are great when it's wet, but otherwise they're not that comfortable Yes, that's atopy. I'm only eating cortisone for a short period and I'm gradually diminishing the intake, so there shouldn't be any problem. I've listened to my doctor's instructions carefully
I like the song very much. It's very poetic. Thank you so much for the link (I'll be expecting some more ). I saw some other Finnish music related links on Youtube; would you recommend any one especially? Best of lucks with the Swedish exam!
Annie came back after defeating the Russians!! Absence forgiven... as long as you don't disappear forever I have noticed that "Anna", in Finnish context, means "Let me", so... let me what? I made a preliminary list: "Let me vacuum my room", "let me study Russian", "let go off of me, Russian" and "let me walk away from drunkards" I want a pair of Nokia boots right now... in case I ever live another winter Is atopy the name of the condition you suffer? How much cortisone do you take? My mother suffers from Lupus and the doctor once prescribed a fourth of a pill of cortisone per day, because she couldn't put up with the rash either. The doctor told my mom that cortisone must be taken in small doses because it's a strong, therefore dangerous drug. I don't mean to scare or discourage you. I just want you to be careful with it because I care, okay? Just be careful
