Ever wondered how valuable lit texts are? Well, I never really knew until I had to carry out a small study in my dissertation recently.
Lit texts have always been associated with the reading. Lit texts provide students with the vocabulary, grammar and creativity needed in writing. They're especially helpful to L2 students as they are able to carry out "literary borrowing". They model after the author and one can see the immediate improvement though they may not comprehend the whole extract. Anyway, who needs to, right? My l4 year old daughter who is going on 40, often tells me that she reads fast to get the idea of the whole story and not to understand or learn the vocabulary in the texts.
Lit texts are definitely useful to low proficiency students and L2 students. They are more interesting compared to the staid prepared texts found in textbooks. So, to those of you teachers out there, give it a try and see if you agree with me.
