I am ONLY "Featuring" one of my own entries because I want as many people as possible to see this; and I am afraid a lot of people might be missing comments to their own blog :(

Now and then people who are new members/not yet eligible for their own blog post a comment to someone's blog. It might be to a blog entry you made that day, or, it might be to a blog entry you made *months* ago. Their comment does not appear right away, it has to be posted/"accepted" manually by Scher or I.

So.

The only way I know of right now that you can be notified of New Comments to *any* of your blog entries is to "Subscribe" to that specific Blog Entry. If you already have a lot of Blog Entries ... like, err, mtpspur!!! ... well I wish you luck ;) but I suggest you always Subscribe to your own entries; this way you get an email notifying you of the new comment and you get a link to which entry it was for. A comment someone makes on an older blog entry of yours might not show up in your "Recent Comments" block, if you even have that enabled.

So...

To Subscribe to a Blog Entry:

click on the "Entry Tools" drop-down menu on top right hand corner of the blog entry.

Select "Subscribe to This Entry".

Then, choose "Instant", "Daily", or "Weekly" updates.

There! Now no more missed comments :D

First of all, what I want to say is, if you are going to register with an online forum, *please* do not use your real first and last names! I have had a number of people recently who have done this, who then change their mind and realise how silly this is, and want their user name changed and / or all of their posts edited or removed so that their real name is not here anymore. There are far better things I would rather do with my time here :)

Ok, now that that is out of the way, I have to say, it's still kind of early in the morning for me and my brain is not functioning at full capacity yet, it takes longer now that I am caffeine free :lol: [yes I only drink decaf now...long story] so I am going to be lazy and copy and paste yet some more of the emails I get. I have done this twice already here and here.

As I have done earlier, any identifying info has been removed. If you do however chance upon an email that you sent me and are not comfortable with it being here, please let me know and I will remove it.
Derria\'s \"TWO WORDS\" on Joyce is, in my opinion, the deepest analysis in Joyce field, specifically in his masterpiece \"FINNEGAN\'S WAKE\".But, as far as ULYSSES is concrned, I persoally know no analysis deeper and more enlightening than F.LYOTARD\'s ,in his \"Toward the Postmodern\", some part of which I\'ve introduced
and translated into the persian nation.
I applaud your efforts in taking a stand against students\' blatant reuse of purchased essays. I am impressed by the site you have constructed and plan to forward the URL along to the teachers in my high school. (I am a school librarian.)
I would like to ask that in your statement to students regarding plagiarism of purchased essays, that you take a firmer stand. Your wording in this statement focuses on the impact to the student should they get caught and cautions students that teachers have sophisticated means of catching them. If we as educators and
distributors of information are unwilling to take a stand and state to students clearly that plagiarism is wrong and that not only can it have a detrimental impact, it undermines your own personal integrity and academic pursuits; the problem will not be overcome. I encourage you to take a firm stand. Plagiarism is not ok if you don\'t get caught, it is wrong. Help us teach this message by supporting this
ideal.

.

I have to say that I was surprised upon my first visit to your site that your sponsored links are to (a) a marriage service for arranged marriages and (b) Married But Looking (illicit contacts). Are you sure these are the best ad campaigns for a site that is sure to draw many junior and senior high school viewers? I think not.
I had posted a kudos blog entry earlier this year, and thought I would post another 'kudos' entry regarding the comments, queries, and feedback I get about the site. As usual they are posted anonymously so as to not reveal the identity of the sender.

Disclaimer: If any of you recognise one as your own, please view it in the spirit that this is intended, as a fun way to get a glimpse into how other people see and use the site.

Some of the messages I get are annoying--as you will see below, like repeated homework queries :p --some of them are silly, some of them are downright strange, and some truly touching. Again I will spare you the spam messages :lol:

Ok, here we go: (my comments are in brackets)
I was wondering if you could do me a huge, gigantic, enormous, monumental favour??????????? Would you please, please, please ban me? I love LitNet, honestly, I can't tell you how much I love LitNet . Which is, indirectly, why I need you to ban me. I will say that I don't want to be able to post any more. I just want to be able to read the threads and whatnot and I can do that even banned but . . . I NEED to NOT be able to post anything anymore. PLEASE . . .Thank-you sooo much!!! (Even if you can't or won't, thank you.)
Dostoievski was a deeply illiterate aristocrat who\'s litterarture is drivel and a defunct money making scheme.
currently working on involves each student to portray a historical figure of their choice. I have chosen Louisa May Alcott as the historical figure I will present, and educate the class about. I was wondering if you could give me some anecdotes about Louisa May Alcott such as how she was like when she was a teenager and a child, how her family life was, and how she really felt about her accomplishments to further help me get a clear understanding of her and help me be able to create a better
presentation. Thank you for your time.
Please go to this page on your site: http://www.online-literature.com/elbert-hubbard/journeys-vol-five/4/ The author of this article is not only ignorant about the life of Robert Burns but also a religious bigot! Burns was not a failure in life. At 37 years of age, as he lay dying the one thought was of his wife and children?s welfare!

Robert Burns had Rheumatic Fever, which in the end cost him his life. It had nothing to do with making love or drinking! Most of his beloved children died of it. If this author wants to read an encyclopedia then per chance you might send him to Britannica for the correct information. Yes, in the beginning, Burns did disdain the military but before his death; he organized the homeland militia during the French Revolution in case of invasion. This is a statement of great bravery regardless of one?s earlier thoughts. He deserved the magnanimous funeral in which he was honored by the Scots Guards!

This is entire article should not be published in ONLINE LITERATURE. Freedom of the press is one thing but malicious hypocrisy is another! Please give the author a message from me. (ok..... but Elbert Hubbard died in 1919) Before you write about anything, research it first! In the future, my prayer is that you read what you print BEFORE it goes online!
I have made a good face, for free, that is pretty good. I could\'ve used it in a post but I couldn\'t paste it in. It looks like 2 types of faces. One that you are not sure of yourself and that you are seeing what other people are saying back like whether they are agreeing with you or just not even accepting your opinion. The other type of face is that you are listening to someone but they are not making sense. If you are interested, just e-mail me

Reading about St. Patrick (c.390-461), Patron Saint of Ireland in my Oxford Dictionary of Saints (3rd ed. 1992) with my morning coffee, it seems that this guy caused much controversy and was quite the rabble rouser! I think his green beer drinking compatriots would appreciate that :p

One of the few sources of information regarding his life is from his own autobiography or Confessio. He was actually born in Kilpatrick, Scotland to a Roman family of high rank (his mother Conchessa was a relative of St. Martin of Tours, his father, Calphurnius, a deacon). Patrick’s first foray to Ireland was as a captive of marauding Irish pirates who enslaved him for six years. He tended their sheep while fervently praying for salvation (he hadn’t been very religious before this time) and is said to have been visited by an angel who urged him to finally flee his captors and seek a life in the service of Christ.

A stranger in a strange land now, through many trials Patrick struggled to make the 200 mile journey home. He then set to studying the Latin Bible and joined the mission of St. Germain. Around this time, Palladius was acting as Rome’s “first bishop of the Irish who believe in Christ”. c.435 Patrick became his successor and made his way back to Ireland. Of course the Druids protested but he was intent on finding a seat for his mission—but not before first travelling to where his once cruel master lived to bestow forgiveness and blessings on him.

Patrick’s see was located in Armagh, County Ulster, Northern Ireland, but he travelled far and wide to preach, ever the penitent, sleeping on rocks and wearing hair shirts. He worked hard ‘to free the country of Druidism’ for he was fervently against their ‘demonaic leaders’ and pagan idolatry. He stood many trials with them, preaching and praying for their salvation, and armed with his faith fought many battles with the magicians and sorcerers. It is said that Providence sealed their fate on Easter Sunday 433 when Arch Druid Lochru was flung to his death on the rocks while Patrick was again praying to free the country of the Druids’ influence.

“The historical Patrick is much more attractive than the Patrick of legend, the thaumaturge who expelled snakes from Ireland [a popular theme in portraits of him] or ‘explained’ the Trinity by reference to the shamrock”…. however, “The exaggerated popular view of him” (ibid, p. 380) is that he single-handedly converted the entire country of Ireland and he is its only True Apostle. But the fact is he had many followers and fellow ministers who for generations carried on his work.

The cult of St. Patrick spread swiftly after his death, said to be on the 17 of March. In the early 1700’s North American Irish immigrants began to celebrate his feast day. Sooooooo, Slainte! Happy Lá 'le Pádraig, Lá Fhéile Pádraig, St. Patty’s Day, or St. Paddy’s Day! :D

It's Robert Burns' birthday today. I had added him to the site a number of months ago because I thought his inclusion as Scotland's bard was important, he's a worthy poet and songwriter, and he did much work during his lifetime to ensure that his country's folk songs, music and lyrics, would not be forgotten.
oh yeah! and I've got Scottish blood in me bones

Burns wrote in the Scots dialect which sometimes makes his poetry difficult to understand if one is not familiar with it, but he had a great sense of humour and spoke to the common people which is why his popularity was and remains so extensive today. I think he'd be quite proud of all the debauch, suppers, partying and singing that happens in honour of him on his birthday.

The local festivities where I live include:
talk of Scotland's history, Scottish music and dancing, parade of the haggis pudding, address to the haggis, neeps and tatties, oatcakes and shortbread, toasts to the Lassies and the recitation of "Tam o'Shanter" and singing of "Auld Lang Syne". Not to mention the copious amounts of whiskey that will be consumed :p

--

["I here enclose you," said Burns, 20 March, 1786, to his friend
Kennedy, "my Scotch Drink; I hope some time before we hear the gowk,
to have the pleasure of seeing you at Kilmarnock: when I intend we
shall have a gill between us, in a mutchkin stoup."]

--

Let other poets raise a fracas
'Bout vines, an' wines, an' dru'ken Bacchus,
An' crabbit names and stories wrack us,
An' grate our lug,
I sing the juice Scotch bear can mak us,
In glass or jug.

O, thou, my Muse! guid auld Scotch drink;
Whether thro' wimplin' worms thou jink,
Or, richly brown, ream o'er the brink,
In glorious faem,
Inspire me, till I lisp an' wink,
To sing thy name!

Let husky wheat the haughs adorn,
An' aits set up their awnie horn,
An' pease an' beans, at e'en or morn,
Perfume the plain,
Leeze me on thee, John Barleycorn,
Thou king o' grain!

On thee aft Scotland chows her cood,
In souple scones, the wale o' food!
Or tumblin' in the boilin' flood
Wi' kail an' beef;
But when thou pours thy strong heart's blood,
There thou shines chief.

Food fills the wame an' keeps us livin';
Tho' life's a gift no worth receivin'
When heavy dragg'd wi' pine an' grievin';
But, oil'd by thee,
The wheels o' life gae down-hill, scrievin,'
Wi' rattlin' glee.

Thou clears the head o' doited Lear;
Thou cheers the heart o' drooping Care;
Thou strings the nerves o' Labour sair,
At's weary toil;
Thou even brightens dark Despair
Wi' gloomy smile.

Aft, clad in massy, siller weed,
Wi' gentles thou erects thy head;
Yet humbly kind in time o' need,
The poor man's wine,
His wee drap parritch, or his bread,
Thou kitchens fine.

Thou art the life o' public haunts;
But thee, what were our fairs an' rants?
Ev'n godly meetings o' the saunts,
By thee inspir'd,
When gaping they besiege the tents,
Are doubly fir'd.

That merry night we get the corn in,
O sweetly then thou reams the horn in!
Or reekin' on a new-year morning
In cog or dicker,
An' just a wee drap sp'ritual burn in,
An' gusty sucker!

When Vulcan gies his bellows breath,
An' ploughmen gather wi' their graith,
O rare! to see thee fizz an' freath
I' th' lugget caup!
Then Burnewin comes on like Death
At ev'ry chap.

Nae mercy, then, for airn or steel;
The brawnie, bainie, ploughman chiel,
Brings hard owrehip, wi' sturdy wheel,
The strong forehammer,
Till block an' studdie ring an' reel
Wi' dinsome clamour.

When skirlin' weanies see the light,
Thou maks the gossips clatter bright,
How fumblin' cuifs their dearies slight;
Wae worth the name!
Nae howdie gets a social night,
Or plack frae them.

When neibors anger at a plea,
An' just as wud as wud can be,
How easy can the barley-bree
Cement the quarrel!
It's aye the cheapest lawyer's fee,
To taste the barrel.

Alake! that e'er my muse has reason
To wyte her countrymen wi' treason!
But monie daily weet their weason
Wi' liquors nice,
An' hardly, in a winter's season,
E'er spier her price.

Wae worth that brandy, burning trash!
Fell source o' monie a pain an' brash!
Twins monie a poor, doylt, druken hash,
O' half his days;
An' sends, beside, auld Scotland's cash
To her warst faes.

Ye Scots, wha wish auld Scotland well,
Ye chief, to you my tale I tell,
Poor plackless devils like mysel',
It sets you ill,
Wi' bitter, dearthfu' wines to mell,
Or foreign gill.

May gravels round his blather wrench,
An' gouts torment him inch by inch,
Wha twists his gruntle wi' a glunch
O' sour disdain,
Out owre a glass o' whiskey punch
Wi' honest men;

O whiskey! soul o' plays an' pranks!
Accept a Bardie's gratefu' thanks!
When wanting thee, what tuneless cranks
Are my poor verses!
Thou comes--they rattle i' their ranks
At ither's a----s!

Thee, Ferintosh! O sadly lost!
Scotland lament frae coast to coast!
Now colic grips, an' barkin' hoast,
May kill us a';
For loyal Forbes' charter'd boast,
Is ta'en awa.

Thae curst horse-leeches o' th' Excise,
Wha mak the whiskey stells their prize!
Haud up thy han', Deil! ance, twice, thrice!
There, seize the blinkers!
An' bake them up in brunstane pies
For poor d--n'd drinkers.

Fortune! if thou'll but gie me still
Hale breeks, a scone, an' whiskey gill,
An' rowth o' rhyme to rave at will,
Tak' a' the rest,
An' deal't about as thy blind skill
Directs thee best.
~"Scotch Drink"

But really--what's up with Amazon.ca and Amazon.com? sacrebleu!!

.com you can get everything from dictionaries to dog pooper scoopers, GQ Magazine to snowblowers!

.ca? Well.. dictionaries, DVDs, and the latest Decembrists CD. Oh, and software/video games. That's it!

Which is all fine and good, but I'm really quite shocked and appalled that I can't order a canister of Illy Espresso Fine Grind or a black pair of BCBGirls Women's Gabry Platform Wedge Boots....I mean I really do hate pretty much all forms of shopping in real life, be it for groceries, clothes, or other 'necessities' :D It would be great to do most of it online.

But I guess I can't be a bona fide mouse potato until I can buy virtually *everything* online! thanks a lot amazon.ca! Now I have to go outside and get some fresh air and exercise! :lol:
1. People who don't read the forum rules
/cheezy flashing neon sign buzzing and intermittently flickering..

Ok, there are a lot of (young and old) people here who haven't used a discussion board before, sometimes it's obvious, sometimes not-so.. so.. they usually get the benefit of the doubt because I was a n00b once too and I'm nice like that (usually) ;)

But please remember to read the rules, yes there are rules here, just like most other public access sites on the `net :)
.
.
.
.
.
haha! ok Neo_Sephiroth, you've prompted another biggie...

2. People who don't have a sense of humour.

Keep in mind, there are thousands of members here, pretty much from every continent and country on the planet, who represent dozens of native languages, religions and cultures. Sure sometimes things get lost in translation, but smilies are the international language of expression. If you don't 'get' something, just ask :)
.
.
.
.
3. People who expect to get help with their essay/writing assignment :brickwall

I posted this somewhere else but thought I would use most of it here too:

The regulars/long-timers here are much more likely to respond to your requests for help/feedback/opinions if you join in on other discussions of the forum, where they can get to know you a bit better before taking the time to read your work and offering thoughtful/serious feedback/critique etc.

You've got to understand, sometimes there are a dozen posts a day here by people who only post once asking for help/feedback. This isn't a 'help' site, and often when one does give help/advice/feedback/opinion, the OP doesn't return with even a thanks or reply.

So....if you do ask for help or want feedback, be patient about it. Another way to put it is....you get back from the site as good as what you put into it

:D
.
.
.
.
4. People who flood the forums.

ok, maybe part of peeve #1, but specifically about flooding, people who post their topic (usually pleas for help on homework) multiple times in multiple forums. They don't realise that all but one will be removed to the Mod cave :p
.
.
.
.
.5. People who use the site as their own personal little pulpit/soapbox/advertising space/self-promotion venue etc.
My Top 10 Forum Satisfaction Hints*
*that is, if you are going to stick around and want to meet new friends and get the most out of the site ** :D

10. Post a pic of yourself, or, something/somewhere/anything/ that is meaningful to you, as your avatar, and expresses your personality. It helps people ‘relate’ to you and remember you in the forums. You can also put a pic on your profile and in your signature line. That’s 3 areas where you can make an impact without typing a word, which can be accessed in your User CP (link top left corner of screen).

--

9. Fill out at least a few details in your profile. “Favourite book” and “Interests” are good ones, as well as some idea of your location, even if it’s just the country you live in.. although lots of people like to put “under my desk” or “Over the Rainbow” there instead, which is ok, another way to express your sense of humour/personality, (sense of humour a must here too I should add :p ) but there are people from all over the world here and they seem to like to know where to ‘place’ you in relation to themselves. You can also post in the “Where are you from?”topic.

--

8. Check out the Introductions area of the Forums. Start a topic introducing yourself to ‘break the ice’ so to speak, or, join in on the “Introduce Yourself and say Hi” topic :wave:

--

7. If you have signed up with a handle like “XXyZzzs123” it’s hard for people to ‘relate’ to you on a more personal level. If you sign your posts, even now and then, with your first name (but not your last!), or your nickname, that helps people feel more ‘connected’ to you.

--

6. Start a LitNet Blog . You’d be amazed at how much they are read by others, and people can comment on them, another way to ‘connect’ and express yourself, your interests, what you like to read, where you have traveled etc. and let others get to know you.

--

5. Forums Search is your friend :D

--

4. In a discussion, ask people questions or post something directly in response to someone else, and using the quote function helps greatly so it’s clear who you are addressing. If you just post “I agree” or “That’s cool” you will find it harder to ‘integrate’ or ‘connect’ with others. You will get more response if you ‘engage’ people in discussions. But please be patient if people don’t respond right away! ;)

--

3. In regards #4 however, if you come here and post only questions/pleas regarding help for homework assignments, are seeking critiques of your stories or poetry, and don’t contribute to any other areas of the forums, you’re much less likely to get any ‘help’ or feedback.

--

2. Read the Forum Rules and FAQ

--

and...

1. Ask questions if you don’t understand something :)

You can use the Private Message feature to send a PM to Scheherazade, myself, or Admin to ask questions :)
.
.
.
**(this list is in response to questions I have gotten over the months/years I've been here, and to issues/questions brought up in the forums, mostly by newbies who are getting a feel for the site. It is for informational purposes only. This list does not constitute a guarantee of said satisfaction proposed in the title: your mileage may vary, there are no guarantees in life, the only certainties in life are death and taxes, you reap what you sow, put your best foot forward...er... you get the idea! ) :lol:

I will be adding to this as I go and will probably post this in the forums too somewhere when I am finished, but for now I'll just start with this. I often get asked for tips on *how* to search/use this site and thought I could pass on some tips.

--

If you are a student or researcher or just reading for fun and are looking for a specific topic or need a quote from an author’s poem, short story, essay or novel, here are some tips on how to do it.

The search features on the site work best in Internet Explorer. If you are using Firefox I have made additional notes[1] because results can be different.

Advanced Search

If you don’t know the author or source of a particular quote or phrase or topic, you can use the Entire Site Search here:

Advanced Search

(You can also do specific Author searches from there and search the forums too)

From that page enter the word or phrase in the Entire Site Search text field. For example typing in ‘Orwell essay’ (no quotes) and clicking the button www.online-literature.com brings up over 140 results from the discussion forums and specific essays that Orwell wrote.

After clicking one of the links, in this case his essay on

Charles Dickens

which happens to be divided into six chapters, you can then do a search for a phrase or specific word(s) and that will give you links for the chapter they occur in. For example typing in the word “poor” brings up 5 results, and clicking on one of the links brings you to the highlighted word on that page, if you are using Internet Explorer.

[1] Note for Firefox users: If you are using the Firefox browser and click on one of the results links, the search word “poor” will not be highlighted. In that case you can then click on the menu option “Edit” in the very top left corner of the browser window, then “Find in this Page”. A search function appears at the bottom left of the screen and there you can again enter the word “poor” and it will highlight the word in the text and “jump” to it on the page. You can also use the “Next”, “Previous”, or “Highlight All” functions to get more results. You can also do this in Internet Explorer. It is very handy to use this when a specific chapter or poem is many screens long, it saves you all that scrolling for a word or phrase :D ]
.
