  1. Anna Karenina and Don Quixote

A few months ago I read War and Peace for the usual reasons--one to say I did it and one to please a friend online from Russia that I had an interest in learning more about her country. War and Peace had many good moments to it but was wildly earratic in story pacing and character development. The main lady Natasha never in my mind rose above spoiled brat status and Pierre was a model for the Walking Dead in personality and interests. I felt Gogol the much better Russian writer. After about three ...

  2. Birds and Engineering

I came across this wonderful video. Forget the hype on “bionic beak.” It’s just a hard nylon that’s used in a myriad of parts. Also the 3-D modeling program supposedly “typically used in aerospace” is nothing special and not just used in aerospace. It’s probably Pro/ENGINEER software (here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Creo_Elements/Pro); all mechanical engineers use it, not just aerospace. Nonetheless it makes me proud as a mechanical engineer.

by , 09-17-2012 at 11:24 PM (Barmy Blue's Bland Blog)

Is there anything special going on in Canada in the next few weeks? A holiday or an event or something? I'm struggling to find a reason for why the old dinosaur is coming out of his cave to go abroad.

But. To begin. I got a carrot cake cake mix over the weekend. I saw it last week and developed a craving for it later on in the week, so this week I got it. I don't know what it is but there's something delicious about carrot cake. Usually I veer towards ...

  5. A busy little bee

by , 09-16-2012 at 06:01 PM (day in a life)
I have been very busy since school started. Books and essays and all sorts of reading being done. My son is very happy in school and tomorrow I'll go and hear how things are going and what they are doing. He is so good at reading and has so much fun sitting in his room trying to read difficult books. I love listening to him spelling out the names of dinosaurs.

By now I have read Saint Augustine confessions, Rousseau's confessions, All Quiet on the western front and just finished ...
