Reflections on the puddle of life

Having palpitations!

I went to the library yesterday. It's the Manchester central library, very close to where I work. It's a wonderful library with diverse stock in a stunning building. I love it.

As I was wandering around I noticed lots of posters on the walls. They said something about library closure. I took a closer look....

THE LIBRARY IS CLOSING!

Disaster! The library is being closed for refurbishment, which doesn't sound so bad except IT WON'T RE-OPEN UNTIL 2013!

Yikes! That's 3 years. 3 years without the central library. What am I going to do?

Fortunately they're opening a temporary library, but somehow I just don't think it'll be the same.

2010 is shaping up to be a rubbish year so far

I'm sorry!! At least they'll have a temporary one set up. Maybe you'll be surprised and it will exceed expectations. Even better, when the other opens again how nice it will be :)

I would get wild with anger without the library. Even if you don't use it as frequently as you would like, at least you know it is there when you need it. Three years is ridiculous, why can't they work around people. There is no flexibility! I won't get too nutty about my political ideas about the symbolic meaning of the library.

    Very sorry for this!

You poor creature!! Three years - must be a big library! I have no idea what I'd do without the library - ok, go hugely into debt buying hundreds of books.

I would be angry too. What ticks me off about the the library system in New York City is that every borough has it's own central library except for Staten Island, which is where I live. I love the central libary in Manhattan - it's fabulous (and I'm not talking about the research library, which is even better), but it's over an hour's hike by ferry and subway to get to it.

I would be angry. Three years is a long time. When I moved into the house I live in now, the little library was just two miles down the road. A year later they closed it to begin building a new one. I was furious. We had to trek about 4-5 miles to the one they had just completed.

Two years later ours opened and I love it. It's not far away from the original one. The only difference is that it closes at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, it's closed all day on Thursday, and it opens at 2 p.m. instead of noon on Sunday, the price we have to pay for having two libraries in our city.
