Nostalgia

. . . what?!?!? this isn't right!

I'm bouncing off the ceiling. For once in my life, an energy drink has caused more than just a severe case of insomnia. In class tonight, I was asking my teacher if we were going to be in the shop at all, to which he responded 'why?'
Well, I said, if we were going to be sitting down, I needed caffeine to stay awake. I always end up dozing off during the in-classroom activities. At a university, it must not be too hard to sleep through class, but in a class of seven people, one person asleep is pretty obvious.
I digress. he offered me a Monster, which was supplied to the engineer by the Monster company as a sort of sponsorship for a national race or something like that. I finished it at seven. I am still twitching right now at twenty to eleven. I've never been this affected by anything. I believe it is simply because of the fact that I had it a few hours before my usual bedtime, rather than early morning. I'm not making sense to myself right now. whatever.
the difference between this class and the one I just took is amazing. THe teacher is better. He's only been out of tech school for nine years instead of fifteen, so he kind of remembers what it is like to be a student. he makes sure we get the kind of education we need- not the ones the directors think we need. if he has to totally derail the schedule to make sure we get something necessary, it will be done. and he doesn't quite have the you are student I am the teacher attitude. he talks like us, integrating himself as a friend teaching a friend instead of a teacher preaching to his pupils. when I saw he talks like us, he doesn's talk like this:
'If you do not properly record the work you performed, your service writer will not understand what you are supposed to get paid for and will have to ask you."
he talks more like this:
"if you don't write down the **** you did, your service writer will f'in' hate you."
what I really like about the auto program, is that the atmosphere is not an education atmosphere. it is an educational experience, but it's kind of like a bunch of guys working on a bunch of cars. It is so relaxed, it is way easier to learn there. I've had classrooms where the teacher expected to be called Mr. or Mrs. so-and-so.
I call my teachers by their first names. they throw snowballs at me when I'm changing my spark plugs. I drop the f-bomb at full volume when I screw something up and they don't chastise me. They come help me fix what I screwed up.
one of my favorite teachers went on a political rant for better than half a class period. they help us figure out unrelated problems with our cars during classtime, and will stay with us at ten o clock when security is breathing down our necks, waiting for us to finish a project so they can shut down the building. I love my school. its awesome.

okey dokey. I'm still wired but my tendonitis is kicking in from all this typing, so I'm gonna go work on my truck. toodles.

Sounds like a great learning environment skib -- the most important element of any classroom, whether it's the one you describe here or not is that the students and the teachers blend play and learning. Of course, this relationship depends greatly on a mutual respect so that each party knows when when to goof around and when to cut the crap.

this is very true. When it comes down to it, they are still in charge and we do listen. It's not a complete zoo!

 Never ever drink energy drinks near bed. I know the feeling since I've done similar things. The worst for me is 5 hour energy. I'll zing around for at least eight. Glad to hear it sounds like you're enjoying your class. It makes things much easier.

See, the thing that got me (now that my head is relatively clear I can think it through) is that they have never bothered me much, even before bed. Usually, I freak out for twenty minutes or so till the sugar wears off, then I crash, physically anyway. my mind is still going a million miles an hour. I love five hour! it's got a whole bunch of B12 (which helps prevent hangovers if combined with a few other post-party remedies!) and it isn't an uncontrollable zing 'cause there's no sugar!

My problem with 5 hour is that I love it, but I also tend to find that when I'm ready to crash my brain will not turn off. I can normally sleep even if my body is zinging, but I have issues if I can't turn my brain off.

Sounds like a great class Skib. I bet you really learn in that kind of environment.

Edit: Now that I'm thinking about it, I wish we had more of a hands on tech class to go with along with my engineering classes. I learned so much from technicians when I first started as engineer. Book learning only takes you so far. Hands on mechanics really makes everything come together as to how metal parts fit and interact and what is possible and what's not. Actually one of my best young engineers, who has now moved on to manage his own project, was a car mechanic before and while going to college. I always liked the way he could visualize how parts could come together.

Oh, yeah, that turning brain off thing is a killer! That's the worst, laying there looking at the clock counting down to when you have to get up! I agree totally!

I also agree with you as well, Virgil. Hands on makes the difference between an okay education and a great education. I can't tell you how many videos we had to watch on the different kinds of suspension times. it was horrible. i could have listed the things in my sleep, but when it came time to actually do anything with the cars in the shop, i was helpless. So yeah, the hands on makes all the difference.
