A Mirror Floating in Water

Quebec

Rate this Entry
Hey everybody. I made a short film for my French class about Quebec in which I narrate in French. Since I'm too lazy to write about what I dislike about it, I'll quote what I said to my teacher in my email.

"Sorry that it's late. Upon finishing it in its complete form it appeared too long, tedious and overdone. I trimmed it down to its present length but I still find it to be a little lopsided and coarse.

Either way, I worked really hard and hopefully it shows."

Here it is. I tried imitating Godard's style and whatnot. Sorry I'm tired.

It's a bit long btw, but anybody who wants to see me in my trenchcoat and fedora, this is the video to watch!

I've admittingly never even been to Quebec, so forgive the superficiality.

If the project interested you, you should travel sometime- there are some pretty neat things to see/do around Quebec! And I'm not gonna lie- I watched mostly for the trenchoat/fedora combo- way to rock it.

Oh, but of course it was interesting and really nice of your mom to do a cameo role. The interlude was spectacular, as I've pointed out before.

    Haha, I liked the interlude.

However, Jesus of Montreal is Arcand's best film, Barbarian Invasions is quite good too .

Oh and just in case anybody was a bit taken aback by the somewhat random interlude, it's based on Canadian folklore, done in Guy Maddin style

    Eh... nicen once again.
I believe we have some real talent here.
Ahh... So that's where Quebec is...

I do like the fedora. . I had one too, but I don't recall I ever wore it out. I always wanted to show up at a blues club with it. I suppose it's somewhere.

Can you explain the Canadian folklore and Guy Maden's style, please, for those of us who still linger in the dark on those particular issues?

Why did you include "Out, Out..." by Robert Frost at the end?

I loved the interlude, but I'm still trying to make sense of the whole. Call me a cretin. I'm not sure i learned a lot about Quebec, but I admire your skill in making a movie. I want to learn!!!!

    Sorry :S

The Dancing with the Devil segment was an adaptation of Quebecian folklore. In it, I merely imitated Canadian filmmaker Guy Maddin's editing style with the use of the silent film medium as well as absurdist satire.

I don't exactly know. It's just there. I usually aim for musicality and atmosphere as oppose to meaning and coherence.

Sorry, now I'm ashamed that I turned in a mood-piece to my teacher when she was expecting just some simple information on Quebec. :S

eh, why are you sorry, Daniel? I liked your movie-those were not complaints or critiques or criticisms at all! If I was going to change something it would be to use a poem by a Canadian. Using something by someone of another nationality for me is like making a collage of shiny objects and one of them is a large piece of cardboard. It just doesn't fit.

Other than that, it is awesome!

Which one is your mother, btw? I understand she made an appearance.
