I need suggestions

Rate this Entry
No, it isn't on my pathetic love life (or lackthereof) or my pathetic life in general.
I need technological advice.

I have been looking at getting a digital camera for some time now. Money is obviously an object, because along with this camera, I have to save up for a week-long car trip up north-ish, a new truck, my 2010 gun, the next three jobless months of my life, etc.

I want something pretty durable, waterproof if possible, simple, and takes decent panoramic pictures. I don't care if it takes good 'people' pictures, because if I even take people pictures, I won't be sober enough to take good ones. So, any suggestions?

Not sure about the waterproof. My point and shoots are the Nikon's Coolpix cameras. I kind of constrained myself to the nikon series since my SLR is Nikon and I figured the software would be overlapping. I'm not sure if that makes a difference. I have a Coolpix and my wife has one (not sure of the series on either) but we've been happy with them. To be honest, I'm not sure if the brand makes that much of a difference. They all seem to have the same features and roughly the same price region.

What I looked for was a reasonably sufficient resolution (at least say 5-7 MP) and the largest zoom available, since it would provide the most flexibility for framing and getting close. I don't think paying for higher resolution gets you that much more from a point and shoot camera.

You might want to compare the Amazon prices and then go to a store and see how thier prices compare. I think Amazon is pretty competive in prices. The only thing with mail order is that it's a hassle to return if their's a problem. Here's the link to Amazon's Nikon's series: http://www.amazon.com/s/?field-brand...owse=330405011. But you can go up and view other brands.

I don't know about any that are at the lower end and take good panoramic photos. What I do know of is a good free ware program that you can splice the images together in once they're downloaded. You can get it here http://www.gimp.org/ I actually use this program to edit almost all of my photos, and I love it. It takes a bit to learn and get familiar with it, but for a program that is free of charge it is worth it.

I have a Sony Cybershot -- I'm happy with it and I'd say it's a mid-range camera in terms of gizmos and price.

The little Nikon digitals are pretty alright. I'm with Meg with regards to having a hard time finding a lower end camera with panoramic capabilities. Whatever you do, stay away from Kodaks at all cost.

Comedian- I wish I could afford that thing! That's one good looking little camera!

Becca- Yeah, I kinda figured it's gonna be pretty much impossible to find low end camera with good panoramics. Oh well. I'll just have to make do!
