Celebrating a Son's Success

Rate this Entry
With the teen years over I was convinced that my ability to survive visits to prison without being overly concerned with what the neighbors or church members think would continue unabated once the guttersnipes discovered adult amusements.

Officially my last visit to a jail was an attempt to deliver cigarettes to a 'friend' that did not go well. The friendship that is--naturally a lady -- naturally a wolf in sheep's clothing as it turned out. You can thank her for my eventually by a long and twisted path discovering Litnet. Every now and then I consider the chronicling of the sad, woeful tale of the mid-life crisis but I value Grace86's respect too much however much I keep warning her of the dark side of my life and there are reasons the Lord Christ DIED (not ached a tiny bit) for our sins. By the by--I'm the one who turned her in to the police and delivered her--at the time hoping it was a first step to cleaning up her life. Druggies lie--all the time--but I was not to discover this until later and too late.

But to steal again from Peter David I digress. Both my boys for reasons of their own have chosen a military life. Irony thy gift is boys becoming men. Never did I dream this dream for either of them. To willingly sacrifice some degree of freedom in defense of a government that won't hesitate long in throwing them to the wolves versus spending years debating my dubious authority under the roof of Chateau Mtpspur--sigh.

At any rate tomorrow my second son will be commissioned as an officer in the United States Army as a 2nd Lieutenant--will probably make Captain in three years. He made SECOND in his class of 139 graduating which started with 241 hopefuls. He won the Physical Achievement Award--don't laugh Mary Sue--he is very trim and looks very little like me. Was further awarded the class guidon flag which touches me the most for some reason.

He'll be traveling to Fort Lee VA for school for about nine months and I look forward to his continued success.

Since he never reads my blog I think he would be amused/annoyed at my delight over the 102 drop-outs as World's Finest Comics #102 was my first introduction to Batman and Robin way back in 1959.

That is quite an achievement and a clear sign of a dedicated, driven personality, you are right to be proud of him.

Kudos! Did he just go in or was he a non-commissioned officer for a while? You and Ruth must be very proud.

Edit: Just noticed this perfect new smilie for your son:

Thank you all. Dan was former enlisted--sort of a say we say enlist or think about a day in court situation. Served about six years I think then spent about three years being a instructor at the U. S. Army Survival School. Has a Broze Star from a tour of duty in Iraq. He started out as a paratrooper, was a bodyguard for a general over in Iraq. Also a bit of an amateur boxer--he collects boxing books and DVDs like I collect Avengers. His fiance flies Blackhawk helicopters in Iraq as we speak. Very successful and so far NOT letting success go to his head. My one prayer for him is to be humble and take pride in his accomplishments but remember the God that gave the grace. Proud very much so--but wish I had been there more for him as a father.
