Extended Metaphor - I am a Rock.

I brought there, the standing,
Supporting them in turn
Something now they come to,
A back bone when they fall.
Though I am still a home ground,
They live on me,
I am a rock.

I seem only of use and burden
An unappreciated lifeline.
No more can they visit such,
No more, until they need.
Yet I’ve still seen before,
I know a life they craft
I’m the living floor,
I am a rock.

‘Twil be for their children,
As it is so for mine.
It seems I’d ought get older,
Until just a hole in the earth
Though I will be there to hold them,
Just as I’ve always sought.
Holding all experience,
I am a rock

So now their own run,
As do they dispute.
My range forces, harmony.
Of which they must commit.
I’ll travel on with them,
They must help me now.
Thrown around but loved,
I am a rock.

I wrote this at the very beginning of year eight.

I didn't do much work during the poetry unit. I did more than my classmates, however I could produce work of moderate volume in limited time. No homwework for months.

I liked this one. By the end, my friends were asking, 'so what is it about?'

Hey... You never know, maybe I'm the only one who gets it. It is that easy. The third stanza gives it away.

    What is it about?

Heathcliff, that is a very nice peice.
You ask; what is it about?
The imagery I form is that of volcanism. The formation of an archipelago such as the Hawaiin islands.
"Metaphor" perhaps is a play on METAmorphic rocks.
The "hole in th earth" is likened to the "hotspots" in the earths mantel on the ocean floor, the origins or birthplace of each successive island.
"I'm the living floor" - the ocean floor, earth's mantel, etc.

    Very nice.
    thanks for sharing,

I can't resist saying, it is about grandparents.

I mean, they are all cool and everything, but really.
Also, I suppose the image I get is more of relevance to my own life, I mean, that is the basic role of a grandparent that I've seen.

Very rare I write a poem that doesn't rhyme. Not bad.

And the third stanza is my favorite, especially the lines:
    "Holding all experience,
    I am a rock"
