Halls of the Dark Muse

Well you cannot please everyone

I belong to Deviant Art, which is an online art gallery that is free to join, and allows members to post their work in any form of art you can imagine, both visual and written.

I was invited to join this group on DA called The Haiku Club, though they deal with all forms of eastern poetry, and I have always enjoyed the eastern poetry forms, and the reason they asked me to join was because they happened across from of my Sijo that I posted.

So within the group they host a lot of different contests and the judges are chosen just based on who voltmeters to act as judge, so it is usually always the same group of 4 or 5 people that sign up to judge every time.

And apparently this particular group of people just really don't get my poetry or don't like my work, because I have not even managed to get as much as an honorable mention, and I have been confident in the works I have entered and received positive feedback from others on it, but the panel of judges just don't seem to care one iota for anything I write.

The thing that is kind of interesting about it as well, is I have also noticed that on the occasions when I have acted as judge, my least favorite poems usually get the highest scores from the rest of the judges, and the works that are my personal favorites usually get lower scores from the others.

So my tastes just seem to run in a completely opposite direction from everyone else, which really shouldn't be all that surprising.

Apparently you and the other judges have minds at cross currents.

That's hard to take after awhile. Hang in there and stay confident.

Ahh well you know I have a pretty thick skin, so after a while I just let myself see the amusing side of it.

[I] have tried answering this several times since yesterday and other things have arisen. I liken this to TV shows and comic book series I like. Just because I like them doesn't mean they will be popular. Also doesn't mean hey aren't good either. It's almost an axiom that the favorite artists in comcs are the ones that currently are hot collector items. I well remember early John Byrne (X-Men) from 30 years back that still command prices BUT he can't get a series to save his life anymore that readers will buy regularly. Fame is fleeting. Hang in there. I like you becasue oyur poetry brings out just a bit of imagination out of me which is rare. I'm simple at heart.
