Things Caused by Global Warming

Rating: 8 votes, 5.00 average.
This is kind of funny. Here we are in a brutal winter and there are people who claim that it's really so cold because of global warming. Whether the temperature goes up, it's caused by global warming; whether the temperature goes down, it's caused by global warming. And this cold isn't just local here. It's supposedly across the whole world. Of course it's hilarious to watch people rationalize every bowel movement the earth is a result of warming. Ah the poor polar bears have less ice to rest on, and so their population is dwindling...we must stop the earth from warming...the poor polar bears! It breaks my heart. Or that despite the fact that we are all going to be flooded with water and rain, the earth will experience deadly drought. Forget the fact that according to these very climatologist, the earth has cooled the last eleven, now going on twelve, years. Associations, causal links, correlations between events are a dicey judgement and really judgement has no role in such conclusions. One needs controlled situations and a statistical analysis. Now global warming may be real (though I doubt it) but these wild associations only undermine the global warming cause, at least to me. Someone has collated the claims of things that are occuring or will occur as a result of global warming. Here's that list. Now each one of these are from a news or supposed educated source. If you go to the link at the bottom of the page, it will take you to the page where each listed cause is a hyperlink to its source.

I heard, and the reason they went to that was because all of a sudden the last eleven years it hasn't warmed! So they had to come up with something else.

The climate on Earth has been changing for 4.3 billion years. The last Ice Age is still in recession. It doesn't 'turn the corner' toward the next Ice Age for a couple thousand more years.
We (humans) are definitely poluting our environment, and wreaking havoc on other living species. In the long run, we (humans) may disappear, but the Earth will continue, as will new lifeforms. Our impact is short and temporary when considering the lifespan of this planet.
The list above is an excellent example of special interests wanting to grind their respective axes. The good news is that those axes will be long gone in 100,000 years.

wow. So that's where H1N1 came from! Blame Global Warming!

H1N1, how about flesh eating disease:

Flesh-Eating Disease Is On The Rise Due To Global Warming, Experts Warn
ScienceDaily (Aug. 16, 2007) — Scientists at the University of Hull are working on an improved treatment for a debilitating flesh-eating disease which appears to be on the rise due to global warming....

I just hope the humans die out before the polar bears do

    Hey Virg Funny blog entry.

A scientific type pointed out an interesting fact. You know the whole 'rising sea levels from melting ice' thing? Well, here is something to chew your moustache over:

When you have a glass of icy water, notice the ice cubes don't sit completely submerged in the water? The bit above water level is the expanded part of the mass. So, if the ice cubes melt, the mass will shrink, and not affect the water level... So how is it different for icebergs and sea levels?

    Hmmmmmm....

Well, that is some list... but don't forget what one "smart" british MP - John Redwood said> Global warming will be good for tourism..

:lol: I was laughing by the time I got here, but I think this is my favorite bit of the list.

"polar bears aggressive, polar bears cannibalistic, polar bears deaf, polar bears drowning, polar bears eating themselves, polar tours scrapped"

I know it is alphabetical, but the irony of polar tours being scrapped coming after information on polar bears both being aggressive and cannibalistic just struck me as being funny;)

I actually saw a quite interesting side-note while reading the newspaper (globe and mail)the other day from inuit researchers who claim the melting ice is actually being beneficial for polar bears in some regions as it opens up more hunting grounds and they are in fact seeing increases in places instead of decreases

Polar bears decreasing and now polar bears increasing. The insanity goes on.

    Thanks everyone.

I've read about that theory. I've just come to the decision to stop giving a crap (I usually come to that conclusion about everything).

funny blog Virgil. I guess it's fairly typical of the media to take everything to the extreme. Global warming is also responsible for my sore arm after I fell off my bike in all the ice on Monday. That wasn't on your list But come on, I have to take issue with this:

Displacement is an indicator of volume, but displacement varies dependent on the density of the water, so salt water displaces less than freshwater. Certainly when it comes to shipping, vessels have a deeper draft in freshwater than salt, so if there's a difference in composition this may have an effect. Perhaps marginal anyway. Oh, and then there's temperature of course. That affects volume too. Plus displacement only matters when you're talking about floating ice, but the Antarctic ice is currently sitting on land, which it won't do once it's melted. There's your explanation. Unless you're proposing that the oceans are evaporating into space, in which case we've got a bigger problem!

And I thought you had a scientific mind

Thanks for that Fifth. I had never looked into boat design and that led me to do a little bit of research. Here's a really good web site for that: http://www.oneoceankayaks.com/smhydro/hydro.htm#volume. Quite interesting. The difference in water density between fresh and salt water is about 2.5%, which is enough to make a subtle difference in boat design. I don't however think it really changes the general gist of Ijustmadethatup's point. I don't know exactly what the predictions are for water level rising, but if they are predicting ten feet, then the actual rise will only be a quarter foot or three inches. To be off by 9 feet, 9 inches from ten feet is not exactly is not exactly very good.

By the way, one of the predictions that really caught my curiosity was the prediction that allegators would be coming up the Thames. Unfortunately when I clicked the hyperlinked, the original article has disappeared.

Thanks for yourt comment Prend. I agree.

No, I think the major concern about rising sea levels is the water that's currently sitting on land, such as the Antarctic ice shelf, glacial and Greenland's ice, which will add new water to the current ocean volumes. So iJustMadeThatUp's point is correct but only when you're talking about floating ice. There's an awful lot of ice which isn't currently floating, and that's the concern.
There's also the point that water volume is affected by temperature, so if the climate change increases the overall temperature of the oceans then the water volume will increase too. It's called thermal expansion, which you probably know about already but you can read about it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thermal_expansion
Alligators in the Thames so long as they stay down south and snack on Londoners I'm happy. I'd be more concerned about the sex change thing if I were you
  20. Virgil's Avatar
I'm very familiar with thermal expansion Fifth. I don't think a few degrees makes much of a difference in water expansion. But you may be right about the ice on land melting and finding its way into the ocean and raising levels that way.
