Halls of the Dark Muse

The next best thing to having my own island

Rate this Entry
I was watching one of the paranormal shows which I rather enjoy and they were doing an investigation at a lighthouse when it suddenly dawned upon me that living at a lighthouse would in fact be near to the ideal situation for me.

For one thing I have always held the fantasy of wanting to own my own island. Primarily as a way of further isolating myself from human society, and having complete control over who I did come in contact with, as my island would not allow trespassers, so I would never have to deal with anyone unless I decided I would want to and I would be surrounded by nature.

So living on a lighthouse would be like having my own island, even if I could not declare myself Chief of the island, make up my own nifty rules and become sovern unto myself. But one cannot have everything, and I would be isolated from the rest of the human population and not likely bothered by the outside world.

Another major plus is that living at a lighthouse odds are it would stay pretty cold most of the time, and not likely to get very warm at any point in time.

It would be the perfect place for me to work on my writing, and I could set up a little place to purse my visual arts as well, and of course I could get a lot of reading done.

The only major downside would be that I probably wouldn't be able to get an Internet connection, but than without the distraction I would probably get move the above accomplished.

But if it were going to be a permanent arrangement than I would require the Internet.

I have a fascination with lighthouses too. I have a collection of ceramic lighthouses, replicas of real ones. Amazing how much variation can occur within a single idea of a building fixed with a light for ships to see.

Your blog reminded me of the Lawrence story we did, "The Man Who Loved Islands." Remember that.

Hehe I just liked the idea of living in isolation and somewhere that it stays cold.

Yes, I do remember that story. It was a good one.

I praise the Frenchman, his remark was shrewd,
How sweet, how passing sweet is solitude!
But grant me still a friend in my retreat,
Whom I may whisper, "Solitude is sweet."

    Or perhaps more familiar:

A BOOK of Verses underneath the Bough,
A Jug of Wine, a Loaf of Bread—and Thou
Beside me singing in the Wilderness—
    O, Wilderness were Paradise enow!
