My first ever movie review (please don't expect much)

Rate this Entry
I don't generally write about movies, much less rave about them. On the occasion I'll recommend it to a few people, give my opinion on it, etc etc. Anyway, VERY few movies have held my rapt attention start to finish since I was a young(er) child. I could at the moment count on one hand the films that managed that. Anyway, last night I went to see Avatar, expecting some pretty cool CG and not much else. The preview looked good, but I was a little leery about the fact that there was one sentence spoken in the entire thing. I was blown away. I nearly forgot what movie I was there to see following after the previews, but the nearly three hour movie held my unwavering attention to the point I was disappointed it wasn't longer. The insane CG matched the live actors flawlessly. There was one scene that looked a little iffy, mainly because of the camera angle and distance from the scene, the characters' movement speed wasn't quite right. Other than that, the acting was fantastic (a nice surprise,) the storyline was realistic, and the time to tell it was appropriate. This is one of my issues with some other movies, that the amount of time it takes to tell a story doesn't quite match well with the amount of plot.
Well, that's my first ever movie review. I'll leave it to you to decide how many book reports I passed in junior high.

Cool. I think my husband wants to see this movie. The commercials look interesting. Maybe we'll see it over the weekend.

Huh. I was really up in the air on going to see this (or paying to go and see this) because I have a really short attention span, I HATE CG, and I'm not really a big James Cameron fan. Now I'll consider it. What other films would you give the same rating as this?

My son made it home for holidays and wants to take me Wednesday--my only day off in awhile. I was leery about it--sigh--finally reaching that age when I no longer feel complelled to see every biggie movie that comes out. So your post came at a very appropriate time. Especially as this will probably be the last movie he and I ever see together for the rest of our lives. He's getting married next October and is back in the Army so I have NO illusions about the future. Thanks. Maybe it will be better then I hoped.

I've heard about it. How can one avoid hearing, but yours is the first review! I doubt I'll see it, but I'll have to pull up the trailer from youtube.

    Here it is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cRdxXPV9GNQ

Ok, now that I've seen the trailer, I've got a visceral reaction against it. Seems like a slander against the military. I'm not going to go see it.

I've only heard one other thing about it and that was only in part. But, it was a review and they said it was good. I'd like to see it, but I don't go to the movies very often. Maybe I'll see if my husband wants to go on a date... but I doubt I do. I'll end up waiting for netflix to get it.

I was hoping it'd be good. Maybe I can get out to see it over break.

jersea- well, I could reiterate how awesome it was, but wouldn't that be redundant?

Becca- Well, I guess there aren't any movies that fall into both CG and good acting, but the one off the top of my head that knocked me off my feet was Perfume. That still counts as one hand, right?

mtspur- Well, I certainly hope it isn't a letdown! Is saying good luck appropriate?

Virgil- I initiially wasn't happy about the illusion painted about the military either. But I think it does accurately portray how things can go, in both ways as far as human compassion and human aggression are concerned.

motherhubbard- At home, you don't have to put up with all those other obnoxious people ruining the experience! Just crank up the surround if you have it.

Comedian- I'd be thrilled to hear your opinion. Matter of fact, that goes for all of you!

Ok---I liked the love story the best. Forgot Sigourney Weaver was in it and I've been in love with her since the orginal Alien. Saw it in normal screen mode and in the back of my mind kept wishing the intended 3-D effects weren;t so blatant. Fairly straught forward story with (hardly) any surprises to it--but for a final movie with my son (and of course I drama queened it) it could have been worse. What I'm REALLY waitng for is JONAH HEX June 18th--even if they are throwing some supernatural things into it. I would give up The Avengers before I give up my Hex comics but not Suicide Squad or Grimjack.

Hey Skib- I just saw this movie and I was astounded at how good it was. My husband and I saw it in 3D and the effects were OK. What an incredibly visual world Pandora is, however. The plot is easy to follow, and that was one thing I liked about it. Originally I thought it would be another overly complicated movie with several subplots, but the simplicity of the story line allowed you to focus on the glorious visual world and the relationships of the humans to the natural world and each other.

To be totally honest, it wouldn't have been much of a movie without the love story. Without that, it would have been a typical action movie. I like Sigourny Weaver a lot as well. She is a wonderful actress! I don't believe I've heard of Jonah Hex- what's it about? I guess I could google it too.

Yeah, I've heard good and bad things about the 3D. The details that went into creating Pandora was what really grabbed my attention. Absolutely- the plot was interesting yet easy to follow. I think that is a difficult thing to attain. It was a fantastic examination of human nature.

Jonah Hex is DC western published on and off byDC Comics. Current series just hit issue 50. He's a bounty hunter (which is saying it mildly), originally was comics answer to Clint Eastwood's Man with No Name trilogy. He is scarred on the right side of his face. Wears a Confederate jacket and there is a lot going on under the skin. His death alone is considered a classic for what happens AFTER his decease. Warnning the movie is going to add some supernatural aspects to it which annoys me no end. There is enough 'real' stuff in his backgorund to where oyu don;t need 'effects'/ Abusive father, sold to Indians, branded a traitor to the Confederacy, vendetta with the father of one of his best friends, Chinese wife, two children--to whet the appetite here. Yahoo has a major article or two on him. A few years ago I had to sell some of my collections inlcuding my beloved Avengers but I kept JOnah Hex. He'll be the last series I ever part with and that's saying something form a Batman collector.

Uggrh, I think I had the completely opposite reaction that you did. I was close to falling asleep if it wasn't for all the noise. I have rarely been so passive.

Anyway, the more people praise it, the more I hate it. Glad you got something out of it though

This wasn't an intellectual or artsy movie. I guess that is my only complaint about it being panned. As far as visual effects go, it was actually quite impressive.

But it seems so people didn't like it and everyone is entitled to their opinion.

Panned? I'm not familiar with that term, I'm afraid.

I just went and saw it again. Still fabulous. It appeals to my severely boyish imagination and constant wishes I could start over again somewhere else.
