Do They Sell (real) Magic Wands on Ebay?

Rate this Entry
Few of us still believe in magic. My daughter (age 5) is one of these people. Even though she hasn't seen any magic (I think), she is committed to her belief that magic is here in this world. And not just a generalized "magic". She believes that Care Bears live in the clouds, that the chickadees and nuthatches that visit our feeder really talk with each other, that winged faeries live just on the outskirts our travels.

To whit, her Christmas list this year. So, she and I are having breakfast and she says, "Dad, could you write down my list for Santa?"

"Okay" I reply and go get a pen and paper. "Ready" I add.

"I only want three things this year" she says.

"That's very thoughtful of you" I say.

"Number one: I want a magic wand, a real one. Number two: I want to be able to be a real faerie and live in a tulip. Number three: I would like Santa to surprise me, so he can pick whatever he wants for this one" She tells me.

"That's the best Christmas list I've ever heard" I tell her. "I hope Santa comes through for you."

. . . . . . .

A couple days ago, I told this story to some of my students. And they asked this:

"Are you afraid that when Santa doesn't get her a real magic wand, she won't believe in Santa anymore?"

I paused. I was worried about something, yes. But I didn't think it was about her not believing in Santa. Then I finally understood.

"No. I'm afraid that she won't believe in magic anymore" I tell them.

Now they pause.

I go on. . . ."The world is so full of people who take a thoughtless delight in killing the faintest sparkling of magic, of telling those who wish for the power to make their lives bright and good and whimsical that they are insignificant and foolish. These people think they are serving 'the truth', and perhaps they are, but. . . . .what's the hurry? Must we be in such a hurry to put out the distant light of magic with a dark and cold reality?. . . . And, do any of you know if they sell real magic wands on Ebay?"

Everyone laughs.

I have a wand with a crystal that I use for cleansing and Pagan rituals and once when my 4 year old niece was visiting, I showed it to her and told her this is a real genuine magic wand. So then of course she told me she wanted one, so I said if I ever saw one again I would buy one for her.

That's neat, Comedian! Having no daughters of my own to nurture a belief in magic, this is quite touching! Very cool blog!

Comedian- Awesome blog. You got over 70 hits!!

We all want to raise our children to become good people. It is only natural that she will stop believing and that is good and healthy thing, but she will never be your little girl again. This is what I dread about having children. Why do they have to grow up? And when they do, what will they turn into?

Maybe it is time to explain to your little girl that magic wands are simple little tools and nothing more.

The barbecue does not turn the ground meat into tasty burgers or the mixer does not turn the flour and sugar into a cake on its own. It is us who add the right amount of all ingredients at the right time, put the effort and make it possible.

So if the wand is not used by the right person, it will not work and with the right person, anything can produce magic.

@ jersea -- I know that eventually she'll stop believing in magic the way she does now. And that this cessation is a good thing. I think my desire to prolong it is partly selfish -- I want to believe in magic in that way, and her belief stirs my own. Oh, and I wouldn't dread watching your child grow. It's really fun, even the sad or poignant parts have their rewards.

@ Classic, skib, Juniperwoolf, Daniel, Maryd -- thanks for your kind words. They make me want to put off all my other responsibilities and write more blogs. . . .

@Scheherazade -- that's a beautiful idea: that knowledge and heart are magics that can use everyday. And with any luck, I'll be able to transition my daughter to this sort of thinking.

Your daughter is clearly on the right path in life.
    =D
I hope her belief in magic carries on through to adulthood. The people who believe are the best kind to be around.
