I just don't get people sometimes or perhaps most times.

There is this person upon a poetry forum that I belong to who posted a poem that came off to me as seeming a bit sexist, but I knowing the general nature of his work I knew that was not truly his intent.

So I told him that I felt the poem came across as sexist and parts of it left a bad taste in my mouth, but I certain that was not your intent. Then I pointed out the particular parts of the poem which caused me difficult and explained why the poem left me feeling the way it did.

And prior to this I have always left generally positive remarks about his work.

Well just because of this one comment I made he was like ready to leave the forum, and said he would never post again and tried to make it sound like I just go around saying negative things about his work ALL the time, which is not the least bit true.

I might have come off as a bit strong in my opinions, but anyone who knows the first thing about me, knows not to expect any less, and even so, I do not think I said anything that truly offensive, perhaps it came out sounding a bit harsh, but that is just me.

    No good deed goes unpunished. Sometimes I'm fairly tough in criticizing a poem here on lit net, and I've gotten reaction back. Hey you got to be honest. Otherwise it's best to just not comment.

    Yes that is how I feel about it. If I cannot say what I honestly think, than I just will not say anything at all. I will not give fale praise.

    Thmas Hardy (as reported by Rider Hagard) was at the club reading a review of his latest novel Jude the Obscure which contained some negative thoughts and Hardy declared he was done as a writer--had had enough. So your friend is in distiguished company. I prefer to learn something from my actions for good or ill. But I do tend to remember the one or two failures for years versus the regular successes. Knowing you as I think I do I suspect any criticism is always polite, informative, to the point and never harsh--BUT--I further suspect YOU COULD BE!!!! lol

    Perhaps frank is more suting than harsh, but to the more senstive types harsh and frank can be one of the same. Though considernig the very revolutionary nature of many of his poems I was surprsied that he was so affronted. And taken quite aback by his than trying to accuse me of making a habbit of insulting his work.

    Well my insights have been the revolutionary types are only that way because they USUALLY haven't HAD the experiences they are going on about. The perceived criticisms adds fuel to the phoniness they live in. They like to pretend they are edgy and can't take it when the mask comes off. Just observing over the years. For the record I have NEVER seen you insult anyone --at least here. Or else you are veeerrryyy subtle.

    The very fact that this concerns you shows your respect for peoples feelings.

    I think I am very sensitive, but I haven't had anyone say anything unduly harsh about my stuff. I do realize that I have put it out there, and therefore it is up to me to handle any reaction that it gets. If someone was very rude, I would think that that was their problem .

    I would just give him time to get over it, as I'm sure he will. As writers I think we know we have to allow ourselves to be critiqued on occasion. It goes with the territory and its the only way to grow.

    I have never found you to be harsh or unkind, Dark Muse.

    I just don't like being accused of things I didn't do. If he left the forum just becasue of that comment I made, I wouldn't loose any sleep over it. But don't try and say crap you know is not true.
