A Mirror Floating in Water

Irrelevant Criticism

Rate this Entry
It is quite an established fact that I probably enjoy commercials more than I enjoy TV shows. Now of course there are a lot of ridiculously annoying commercials out there (infomercials!!), but some are very clever and ironic. I especially like the Progressive ones, the over-the-top satirical tailgate Bud Light commercials, as well as the Coors ones in which they have a bunch of guys seemingly talking to these football coaches, quite some comedic editing there. Mainly, I just like commerncials which are able to be self-consciously critical of themselves. Many of them seem to take the squeaky-clean song-based commercials of the 80's and 90's and give an edge to them by parody.

Okay, I was watching the Packers game today and this pitifully sentimental Kay Jewlers commercial came on. Oh God was it so outdated. If you think Kay Jewlers commercials are corny and terrible, get this: So there's a storm going on and there's a clasp of thunber. Oh no! A couple hug and the man says "It's all right I'm here." Pause (touching moment coming) "I'll always be here." Awwww, how touching. Then they have shots of them shopping at Kay Jewlers. Oh I think I have a tear in my eye. "Every kiss begins with Kay."

What a load of crap! Commercials are basically pollution for television, so at least waste my time by giving me something clever and ironic.

Well there's your daily dose of commercial criticism. Obviously one of the leading issues in todays society.

I like the one where the couple is skating and he gives her a necklace in the shape of a forever knot. We've all had moments like that, I'm sure.

Actually, I do kind of like this one where a young couple is walking and they catch up to an older couple; they walk around them, then look back. The old(er) couple are completely engrossed in one another. That's love.

I can't remember which jewler it was advertising, but it was a jewlery commercial. You know, jewelry has always meant love to me, and it was good to see this company get it right even if I can't remember their name, because jewelers know love, you know?

I know the commercial Quimssung is talking about and I like it too. I have to admit the advertising of these jewelers convinced me I needed a round pendent that my husband bought for me from Zales. I do wear it everyday, so I feel like it was worth it. We bought it as a way to celebrate my graduation for sped school (2nd master in ed.)
Commercials can be awfully affective, but mostly 30 seconds of distraction.

You can say that again. Would it be too embarressing if I'd admit that I once had a sudden impulse to go to Applebees after seeing a commercial, and did?

Jewlers sell jewlery. Not love. You CANNOT buy love (Well except the vegas kind ). Thats all there is to it. Those commercials are pretty funny though. At least I think so.
