Halls of the Dark Muse

My new lap top is possessed

Rate this Entry
I have recently acquired a new lap top, because this one, that I am using now, I have had forever, and it has been acting up lately and I don't know how much longer it will last, plus it has Windows 2000 which is not compatible with anything anymore, cannot get the latest I.E, or the newest version of itunes, and so forth on it. Because they don't work with Windows 2000.

For the most part I rather like the new lap top, it runs a lot faster than this one does, and it is a Windows XP and has all the latest and newest stuff on it.

But it does have its own odd quirks, that have no explanation. For one thing, periodically for no rhyme or reason, the volume will just go up all by itself. I will be sitting there using the computer when all of the sudden it starts getting louder out of nowhere and I will click on the volume icon and it will be all the way up to the top for no apparent reason.

Also one time, I went to turn on the computer and it told me that my wireless was not connected, and I had just been online on that computer earlier in the day, so I thought that was weird, and I checked my DSL and it was still working and I could go online using this computer still. So first I tried just turning off the computer, and a little while later turned it back on and it still said my wireless was not connected.

I knew it had to be something with the computer but I had no idea what, I thought about calling my sister to see if she could figure out what was wrong, but I went and clicked on the wireless icon and it gave me this message about making sure the computers wireless switch was turned on. Well I had no idea there was a wireless, I had no idea what a wireless switch was, nor why it would suddenly be off, but I thought maybe if it is something on the side of the computer it accidentally got turned off in moving the computer around and so forth.

So I go looking all over the computer for anything that looks like any kind of switch and at first I cannot find anything, and I am like well how am I suppose to turn it on, when I cannot even find one. Finally I saw right above the keyboard there were all these different icons and one of them was for the wireless and usually it is let up blue and now it was off so I reached over and tapped it because it was just like a little touch pad thing, and the blue light came on and I got my Internet connection back, but I still have no idea how in the act it ended up getting turned off in the first place.

Computers are ridiculous, even though they are one of the neccisities of modern life. I was talking to a computer expert on the phone when mine crashed and he commented rather offhandidly that most computer companies construct their products out of the cheapest possible hardware. They are made to last for no longer than two to three years so that you the customer will be forced to buy their products.

Knowing that computers are virtually manditory for modern living, the computer companies take advantage of this fact.
