Halls of the Dark Muse

What am I missing?

Rate this Entry
It seems to me that every one I have encounters or come across that reads Jane Austin, ranks Persuasion as being equal to or even better than Pride and Prejudice and I don't get it. I loved Pride and Prejudice, and I have enjoyed everything else I have thus far read by Jane Austin, but I did not in the least like Persuasion.

I personally felt that the writing and prose of it was weak, and the story not very interesting nor memorable. In fact I can remember virtually nothing about the book or than that fact that there was some sort of romantic thing going on (not hard to guess in a Jane Austin book) and I do recall not being very impressed with it as I was reading, but other than that, I couldn't tell you much of anything about it.

I just cannot help but to wonder, what am I missing here? I find it completely baffling, that I am like the only person I know who did reads Austin, but did not like that book.

Particularly considering so many other people seem to rank it as one of her best works.

Maybe I just did not care for it so much, because it came off as being more love-storyish, and less witty and satirical than most of her other works. I do remember being somewhat board while reading it, and when I finished it just put it down and shrugged my shoulders and said Eh.

I just think it is comical though how overwhelmingly I seem to be "off" on this one. I am use to reading books that tend to draw a love or hate feeling, but those generally tend to be a pretty even split on either side.

This is one of the only times where it seems to be "Everybody Else" vs Me.

Not always a fun place to be. I happen to like "Persuasion." I don't think it's as great as "Pride and Prejudice." None of her books is as great as "Pride and Prejudice." The one I don't get is "Mansfield Park." I like the heroine, but all the other characters are so distasteful and annoying that I can never get into it.

I find it a bit funny, but it does leave me feeling like there is just something I am not seeing in that book, and for the life of me I do not understand what.

I have not yet read Mansfield Park.

Can't help you there. Have only read Pride and Prejudice mostly due to the Greer Garson movie version which I really liked and the Marvel comics adaptation. Tempted now though. We'll see. Almost tried Sense and Sensibility. The forum is at least convenient in that area.

Of the Austen novels I have read (P&P, Emma, and Persuasion) I would rank Emma as her best, with P&P a close second. Those are both great novels. While Persuasion is beautifully written, i don't think it really has the depth or complexity of the other two. I did however like Persuasion for it's exquisite prose. Austen's prose there is just top notch, perhaps the best prose in English of her era. I just finished Persuasion a few weeks ago and put my thoughts on the novel in the Book Club Forum thread, here: http://www.online-literature.com/for...ad.php?t=41776. Feel free to reply back to my comments. The novel is still fresh in my mind.

Funny, I have recently started reading Emma, and personally I feel that her prose in Emma is the best I have read of her thus far, and I was not in the least impressed with her prose in Persusasion.

LOL maybe I will check out the thread just to remind me of what the book was about, as I can scarecly give a single detail about the story.
