Nightly Visitations

My backyard has turned into the unofficial sanctuary of native wildlife. I swear I think animals have a special secret network of communication with each other. It all started out with the raccoons who have been coming around for ages, and than and opossums started showing up, and actually ended up having a little of baby opossums under the shed once. Well last night for the first time ever, I saw a skunk in the backyard.

The only problem is, that well for one thing the critters make a mess of the cats water, so I have to change it almost every morning, and someday keeps eating my strawberries. There is a strawberry plant in the backyard and before they get ripe enough to eat, somebody else keeps coming along and nabbing them. I have had like 2 or 3 of them.

And somebody, I think probably the raccoons, got into the cat food in the garage last night. Luckily it was not as much of a mess as it could have been, but tonight I will have to make sure to close the garage all of the way now.

Oh by coincidence I saw this today:

Elderly Florida Woman Savagely Attacked By Pack Of Racoons
    October 5, 2009 10:00 a.m. EST

Lakeland, FL (AHN) - A Lakeland woman is undergoing medical treatment on Monday following a savage attack by a pack of raccoons. Authorities reveal the 74-year-old woman was trying to drive the animals away from her front door when the five creatures savagely attacked her.

Reportedly Gretchen Whitted suffered the extent of her injuries when she fell and was literally bitten and scratched on her face, torso, and down to her legs.

Animal experts say raccoons are known to be aggressive when going after food, however Saturday's attack left experts stunned and they admit it was very unusual. Neighbors too were stunned when they heard Whitted's screams and came upon the scene and witnessed the animals devastation to the elderly Whitted.

Racoons are very dangerous animals. Just look at their claws. They will shred you if you get close. be careful.

I can relate to this. In Jersey where I grew up by the woods, the woodland creatures were always in the garbage or duck food. I'm not sure how rural it is where you live, but I know habitat is greatly reduced all over the country. Critters can be a real pain, especially when you have so many different kinds.

Yeesh, I think the moral of the story is not to try to personally involve yourself; if something needs to be taken care of, call a professional (I read Virgil's article). They are called wildlife for a reason!

Other than that, keep food indoors, and enjoy watching the nightly spectacle! Sometimes we get a possum; the other day we were watching a mouse. It was so tiny and cute. I know they're considered vermin, but still...

Oh, I would never dream of hurting an animal or allowing someone else to do so. Though they can cause problems at times, it is not really their fault, they are just trying to live as best they can in a human infested world.

I enjoy their company, and I am happy if they feel safe here, I just have to take the necessary precautions to make things as safe as I can both for them, as well as my own animals.

In fact when I found out about the opossum with her young under the shed, when I went out to feed the cats in the evening, I had a dish I kept near the shed where I would put fruits, nuts, and vegetation for her to come and eat at night.
