Another bone of contention:

Why do I see people (many who are obviously intelligent) either unwilling or unable to write properly? Maybe I'm missing something, but I think that "i" for I or "u" for YOU isn't correct English and shouldn't be accepted as such. In addition to this, I've observed everything from misplaced punctuation marks to incomplete sentences topped-off with outrageously misspelled words. It's as if people who write incorrectly go to extremes to write incorrectly still more.

Forum after forum (this one included), blog after blog, contain hosts of errors that I could only conclude are an act of defiance toward any standardized English usage: a literary defiant style of writing that appears to blend HTML, neologisms, and utter nonsense. Those who are supposed scholars of everything and everyone from Greek Literature to Ernest Hemingway should, I believe, know a little better than that.

STAY TUNED...

Well there are a few reasons for it here:

    1) the number of people for whom english is not their first language

    2)Typos in general
    3) Learning problems such as dislexia

4)This isnt getting graded and is not formal, so basic use of english like when speaking is used a lot

    5) Dont care (this is the most applicable reason for my mistakes.....

I actually have a running gag in my posts when I edit them to see how many variations of I can't spell type well anymore I can wring over the fast typing done in the wee hours to entertain myself first and then maybe the casual reader. I find your blog a must read already.

I grew up reading books, unlike the generation born after me that is the greatest consumer of digital communication devices. I don't like 'chatting' on instant messengers or cell phones etc. so I understand your frustration of constantly seeing 'text speak' like U R replacing 'you are' and etc. . . . . But like spelling, grammatical, and / or punctuation typos which I make all the time, I have learned to live with them and others'. . . . Like kilted said, the majority of people who use this site do not use English as their first language. . . . Use of text speak or typos is not necessarily a base for judging someone's intelligence: some people use voice recognition software to read and type on their computer because they are blind, can't use their hands or voice, or they have dyslexia and don't 'see' their typos. . . . In the spirit of 'netiquette' most long-time discussion forum users usually frown upon comments or critique about someone's typing skills, be they punctuation, spelling, or grammatical errors, if their message is sincere and they're not doing it on purpose to irritate, be a troll, or otherwise deflect from the topic at hand. . . . Because on the one hand you have the young hipsters using l33t speak etc. then you have the oldsters who are still trying to figure out their email program or d/l programs. . . . .you just never know who lurks behind the screen and what their story is . . . And now you have a blog and you can tell us yours! . . . . . . . "the medium is the message"...Marshall McLuhan
