the ocean always dreamed blue dreams

Musings on the day he went away

Let us wipe the tear from Mona Lisa’s eye
Do not disturb her from her reverie
Although I wonder, if she, like me,
Is thinking of someone sweet and far away
I hear the echo of footsteps in the street behind me
As the streetlights glitter and the dark begins to rise
But when I turn to look, the street is empty
A toast to you and me then and all that was
And all that could have been
My heart is full as I look upon your dear and sleeping face
But when I raise my glass to you I find, to my surprise,
It’s empty
What do you dream of and how finely you rest
Your feet upon the razor that you use
To cut away the extraneous stuff of life
And how you dare to take the little boat
Upon the restless sea
How do you dare?
How do you?
I wish you’d look me in the eye and dare to tell me

This is not necessarily about lost love, by the way.

With the disclaimer of not necessarily about lost love my mind went waaaay over to other things. Your avatar with the highly esteemed Bugs Bunny combined with the reference to a boat got me thinking about of all people Popeye the Sailor Man and then your poem took on a life of its own. I believe the white coated men are at the door as I type this. Very sweet poem by the way.

Thank you Dark Muse. And thank YOU mtpspur...love the Popeye reference and the idea that my poem took on a life of it's own! I hope it is sailing happily somewhere on the high seas with Popeye, Olive Oyl, and is sharing a hamburger with Wimpy!

All this has is the appearance of your heart taking over your vocal chords or your fingertips! (I mean "all," of course, ironically).

The phrase "your dear and sleeping face" was an irresistible prompt for me to think of Auden's glorious poem that begins:

Lay your sleeping head, my love,
    Human on my faithless arm...

which I love so dearly... but that's not meant to take away from my appreciation of the seamless beauty of your poem!!!
