A Solider's Heart

I read in an article at the time of the civil war the term "soilder's heart" was coined to descibe the physchological pain suffered by many of the surviriors of the war. There was something about the phrase which struck me as profoundly beautiful, and I was inspired to write this for my dearly beloved who served in the Iraq war.
A Solider's Heart
I see the pain in your eyes
soundless depths
more than words can say,
and my soul quakes,
moved by your stoic suffering.
Yearning to reach out to you
across that dark uncrossable plain
of your tortured soul,
so I cry in the night
for those parts of you
I can never touch.
The scars in your mind
which may never heal,
and all I can do is my best
to comfort you and ease
a pain I will never fully understand.
My heart cries
for the horrors which beat
within your own,
and my soul suffers beside yours
as I read upon your face
a tale of neverending woe.
But there is still love here,
offered in my own eyes
which speak of feelings
no words can convey.
And within the warmth of my embrace
for all the things I can never erase
give me the chance to chase
your nightmares away and
together we will fill in the gaps.
