Giving Myself Away

Giving Myself Away

I called out
and waited for no
answer to come
as I knew there never
could be.

Fate cut a hot white
knife between us
parted forever
I was a fool once
to think I could
defeat it.

We were both used
but how you used me so
in a time when you knew
you could have anything.

There was a time
when it seemed as if
the world was ours
to take, but the dreams
were mostly mine
as you just watched
with your knowing green eyes.

Beneath the gaze
I struggled, a fish
upon the line, or a
hooked worm wriggling
a piece of bait.

How wisely you
always understood
how to use it
twisting when the moment
was right.

So I did the best
I could and it was
never enough to hold
you down.

Fore all I gave
you could only
ever take
so I was left dry
and empty inside.
