Free Fireworks

Rate this Entry
This time of year, I am always treated to a free fireworks show corutesy of my nighboors. I just stand out on the deck and watch, and it usually goes on all night. Some of the closer ones I can see just by standing at the back door and looking out. It is impressive these days, the kind of "domestic" fireworks they make now, as well they look just like the professional ones, though perhpas not quite as fancy as some of the more advanced ones. Still it beats paying or going somewhere that is crowded with a bunch of other people and then being stuck there.

I thought I would try to take some pictures, my first attempt at photographing fireworks, and I don't have a facny high-tech camera, so I think it was a failed effort, but I got some shots I think are kind of cool.

Obvioulsly this isn't fireworks, but while I was out there I could not resist, as well I am sure it is no surprise, and apperent by now, that I do have a thing for the moon.

Lucky! Do you mind if I ask where you live? I ask because shooting off fireworks is illegal in the towns but OK in the country in Texas and Oklahoma.

We did the same this year. Had the kids out at my in-laws to see the display the neighbors put on. I think it is a bit more fun to just watch:)

They have a huge, public fireworks display at the park down the road from my house. Sitting on the roof gives a great, free view.

The laws vary from location to location. They have always been illegal as far as I remember in New york City, but it's only in the last ten to twelve years that it was actually enforced. Before enforcement it was literally a war zone on the streets of NY. Lot's of injuries too. People actually shot these things at each other and while they weren't intending to harm people it occaisionally did. One really feared to move about, at least in my old Brooklyn neighborhood. My mother, who takes anxiety medication, literally would be shell shocked at the end of a 4th of July day. Thank God the city decided to clamp down on this and make an extensive effort to lock people up. It has made a world of difference.

Add that to the list of why making things illegal and enforcing it reduces the use of it, in reference to drugs and prostitution.

Hehe well allegedly they are suppose to be illegal here. Though really on the 4th of July it dosen't bother me that much if people bend the rules, since here there haven't been any serious problems with danger caused by the use of them, though it annoys me when some of the people here start thier fireworks in June, and then go on through to like mid-July.

Yeah, that was wise of New York City. I hope it didn't seem as if I was implying towns and cities should let us shoot them off at will. I had acquaintances once whose neighbors lost their house to a fire after someone shot a bottle rocket which landed on their wood-shingled roof. That they can be dangerous is uncontested.

I did wonder abut what was allowed in Dark Muse's town. I do have very fond memories of shooting off fireworks as a kid. We lived in an unincorporated neighborhood and we shot off tons of them every year. Once I accepted a dare to light one in my pocket, which I did. The explosion was deafening! Afterwards, all that remained was a perfect small singed hole in my pocket.

Please do not try this at home, kids!

Yes, DM, I can see where that could be a little disconcerting.
